08.01.2022 As everyone is different, we all have different ways to communicate. The issue is when we begin to make general assumptions about a situation. This not only leads us into a mindset of a victim, but also makes the message we are trying to communicate very vague and easily misunderstood Imagine two friends talking, when one says to another; My husband hardly expresses any affection towards me!... This is a pure example of an evaluation - a generalisation of what is actually happening. Think what the friend listening to this will come up with to fill the gaps? In what way does he not show affection? How long has this gone on for?... You get the idea... What is instead of the above, the friend said; My husband hasn't kissed me for 2 weeks. This is an observation. Now the friend that just heard this has no need to fill in any blanks as everything is said. The situation and the outcome has not changed... Only the way that this situation is communicated, and interpreted. There are so many examples and so many ways that we on a daily basis miscommunicate and in turn upset or lead people to think something completely different! Have you ever thought you were doing something loving and caring for your partner, but don't get the response of love and care back? It just gets shrugged off? As is turns out - everyone is different and wants to be treated the way they would treat themselves. Unfortunately, not everyone is the same. Before we go on let us introduce you to Representational Systems. EVERYBODY has one. And EVERYBODY falls into one. So here they are; Visual - how something looks Audio - how something sounds Kinesthetic - how something feels Auditory Digital - how something makes sense Visual people will generally show their love by giving gifts and cards - little (or big) things to show you their love An Audio person will say "I love you" and how handsome or beautiful you look today. Kinesthetic (or feeling) will give you hugs and kisses, show affection through touching and trying to make sure you feel loved. Auditory Digital has a unique way of finding value from the relationship. So in order to show love they will help their partners and do tasks or errands that they know will make their partners life easier. This is how they show their love. Imagine an Audio partner trying to show their love to a Visual partner... Something along the lines of telling them they love them, wanting to have a conversation, playing their favourite song, etc... Whilst the Visual partner appreciates all this, they feel as something is missing. Like their Audio partner just never shows how much they love. Unfortunately this happens a lot! And for many relationships it becomes a big issue that only gets worse with time leading to counselling or even break up. There are ways to figure out which type you are, and which type your partner is. 03.01.2022 The way we speak is directly related to how people understand us and what we are trying to say. There are many ways to communicate, but one of the most important will have to be the type of language we use. Let me give you an example Say John gives you a cookie.... You want to tell your friend what John did, and you say: John is generous because he gave me a cookie. Or you can say John gave me a cookie. The first option creates an observation about John that he is generous. This tends to build a generalisation towards John. Now it doesn’t sound so bad when John does a positive thing. What if we turn it around? If John had a coffee and didn’t refill the coffee pot you could say John is selfish. When there may be many factors that made John do that. But when we communicate this way to others (i.e. John is selfish) it brings John into a general meaning of the term. Now others build a perception that John is selfish without even knowing him. This kind of language places blame and accusations onto others instead of being realistic with the situation that has happened. This can lead to a lot of problems. Let’s do another example. When coming to grazing board some will say there is enough if we share Others will say there’s not enough to go around When explaining what has happened one will use sentences like I saw I heard I remember When the other will use Here’s what happened You’re too He’s mean/She’s rude The first choice always takes responsibility and explains exactly what has happened without judgement or accusations. The second places blame on others, generalises situations and judges. These are called the Giraffe Language and Jackal Language respectively - Sura Hart & Victoria Kindle Hodson.
