14.01.2022 Ten Tips for Ideas and Activities with Support Workers I often hear parents of people with intellectual disability or autism, usually, worry about what activiti...es a support worker can or should do with the person they love. It can be hard to be inspired when a worker turns up and says What do we do? and you have no idea and you’re broke! Everyone is in a unique situation, but here are a few tips we’ve learned in our house. 1. Look at the goals in the plan what activities might help you progress toward those goals? 2. Make lists. On our kitchen bench is a folder that includes important contacts and other stuff, along with several pages of ideas for activities. We have a page filled with no cost ideas, and another page filled with low cost ideas, and they were made together with my son. 3. Getting ideas for the lists Facebook is a great place to ask for ideas. Just mention the approximate age of the person you love, and a few of their interests, and see what other people have done. We have some fabulous communities online who are willing to share. 4. Text a copy of your Companion Card (if you have one) to your trusted support workers to save trying to remember it when they go out. 5. Try to include activities that are not just entertainment, but also serve a purpose cooking a meal, doing the shopping, doing some gardening, household chores, volunteering or helping out an elderly neighbour, or learning to play an instrument or make movies or take photos or use social media, for example. 6. Contact your local council most councils will have a list you can download or pick up from their offices with lists of all the local community groups, and community centres and libraries and their activities. 7. For some people, your list of possible activities might be best made in pictures, or even photographs. 8. When you write your list, be sure to include the things you *don’t* want a support worker to do. Our list says that workers should not go to the movies together, as my son is able to do that with a friend without support. 9. Write up a support worker brief too you can even have them make one by making videos. Check out the Summer Foundation website for some great resources on making Support Worker videos. 10. Set a budget. Don’t expect support workers to mindread how much money they should be spending. They might think it’s fine to just go out for one lunch, but if different workers are doing that everyday, they could burn through a tonne of cash that’s needed elsewhere! What are your ideas? What interesting or different activities do you or the person you love do with their support workers? This post is copyright of The Growing Space 2019. You’re welcome to share it here on Facebook, with credit and no edits, but if you want to share it elsewhere, please ask us first. 10.01.2022 Taking care of your mind & body is the most important thing you can do for yourself but it's not always easy to speak up when times are tough or seek support when you need it. That's why it's crucial we check in on the people in our lives & let them know we are here for them Showing support takes a little more than simply asking the question 'Are you OK?", so here's what to do after you have asked...... #RUOK? #RUOKDay #RUOKDay2020 #TheresMoreToSayThanRUOK #MentalHealthAwareness #MentalHealth #Depression #Anxiety
