20.01.2022 They're in SHOCK!!! --- use the Emergency Blanket in your First Aid Kit to keep them warm! A space blanket (also known as a Mylar blanket, emergency blanket, first aid blanket, safety blanket, thermal blanket, weather blanket, heat sheet, or shock blanket) is an especially low-weight, low-bulk blanket made of heat-reflective thin plastic sheeting. They are used on the exterior surfaces of spacecraft for thermal control, as well as by people. Their design reduces the heat los...s in a person's body, which would otherwise occur due to thermal radiation, water evaporation, or convection. Their compact size before unfurling and light weight makes them ideal when space or weight are at a premium. They are included in Workplace compliant first aid kits and also in camping equipment. Lost campers and hikers have an additional possible benefit: the metallic surface appearance flashes in the sun, allowing use as an improvised distress beacon for searchers and also as a method of signalling over long distances to other people on the same route. In their principal usage, space blankets are included in many emergency, first aid, and survival kits because they are usually waterproof and windproof. That, along with their low weight and ability to pack into a small space, has made them popular among outdoor enthusiasts and emergency workers. Space blankets are often given to marathoners and other endurance athletes at the end of races, or while waiting before races if the weather is chilly. The material may be used in conjunction with conductive insulation material and may be formed into a bag for use as a bivouac sack (survival bag). In first aid, the blankets are used to prevent/counter hypothermia. A threefold action facilitates this: - The airtight foil reduces convection - Heat loss caused by evaporation of perspiration is reduced - To a limited extent the reflective surface inhibits losses caused by thermal radiation. In a hot environment they can be used to provide shade or provide protection against radiated heat, but using them to wrap a person would be counterproductive, because body heat would get trapped by the airtight foil. This effect would exceed any benefit gained from heat reflection to the outside. Space blankets are used to reduce heat loss from a person's body, but as they are constructed of PET film, they can be used for other applications for which this material is useful, such as insulating containerse.g. for DIY solar projectsand other applications. In addition to the space blanket, the United States military also used a similar blanket called the "casualty blanket". It uses a thermal reflective layer similar to the space blanket. It provides greater durability and warmth than a basic space blanket at the cost of greater bulk and weight. It is also used as a partial liner inside the layers of bivouac sacks in very cold weather climates. Space blankets are also used by the Taliban to hide their heat signature from NATO forces.

Our face-to-face First Aid Training assessments at our Bendigo and Ballarat Training locations and for our on-site Regional Victoria Clients are therefore continuing unchanged under Stage 3 restrictions. All students must however wear face coverings at all times during the face-to-face assessment unless they have speci...fic medical exemptions. 19.01.2022 Patients who present to the emergency department following a syncopal episode can be a diagnostic challenge to us. There are 5 things we should always do, to help us make the diagnosis. Before we start with the big 5, we need to make 3 general comments: 1. Syncope is a symptom, not a condition. We need to find the underlying condition causing it.... 2. Syncope and Pre-Syncope should be grouped together to minimise misses. 3. We need to have a standardised definition of Syncope. Definition of Syncope There are 3 parts to the definition: 1. Sudden brief loss of consciousness 2. Loss of postural tone 3. Spontaneous recovery to baseline 5 Things You MUST DO? When trying to make a diagnosis in the patient presenting with syncope, we need to be flexible with our approach and target the high yield areas first. We can ask about medications and allergies etc., and these are important, but what is more important is to determine: a Was this a faint or a fit?.and b If syncope, was it cardiac or not? In fact if we concentrate on cardiac or not, we will get most of the high mortality/morbidity causes out of the way. 5 things specific in the history 1. What Happened just before the episode? Was there a PRODROME? Sudden collapse with no prodrome is suspicious of an arrhythmia. Identifying cardiac causes is very important as they are associated with greater morbidity and mortality. 2. What Happened DURING the event? Was there a seizure? Beware the collateral history of a seizure, as myoclonic jerking movements, associated with hypoxia may be mistaken a seizure. The key is the presence of post ictal to differentiating may be the presence of a post-octal period. 3. What happened right after? Back to normal or decreased conscious state How quickly did the patient return to a normal conscious state? If it takes > 5 minutes to return to a normal state, think of a seizure 4. Any previous episodes? Find out the circumstances. Was it related to exertion or noxious stimuli etc.? 5. Family History of syncope or sudden cardiac Death? Always pursue the family history to uncover and potential congenital disorders including Brugada Syndrome.

19.01.2022 Wearing a face covering is a small action but it can make a big difference. When attending our First Aid face-to-face assessment sessions, youll now need to wear a face covering. If you dont have one, one will be provided by Emergency Medical Response. Thats why Victorias Chief Health Officer is making it a requirement not just a recommendation. Heres how itll work:... If you live in metro Melbourne or Mitchell Shire and you need to leave home for one of the four essential reasons, you must have a covering over your mouth and nose. If youre travelling into regional Victoria for work or care reasons, that covering will need to remain on for the entire time youre there. If you live in regional Victoria, youll need to wear a face covering if you visit metro Melbourne or Mitchell Shire and were still recommending you wear one in your local area if you cant physically distance. There are a few exceptions. Kids under 12, those who have a professional or medical reason or if its just not practical, like when youre out running. In our schools, thatll mean teachers dont have to wear a face covering while teaching but students attending for VCE, VCAL or for onsite supervision will. Everyone will be expected to wear one on the way to and from school. This requirement wont be enforced until 11:59pm on Wednesday 22 July to give people a chance to buy or make a covering but if you already have one, please start wearing it now. And if you dont have a mask, a scarf is better than nothing. As with everything, this shouldnt be about looking for loopholes. Its about each of us doing something small to keep everyone around us safe. If Im wearing a covering, Im helping to protect you. If youre wearing one, youre helping to protect me. And if we all wear one, were all doing our bit to slow the spread.

19.01.2022 BEEN RAINING? LOOK OUT FOR FUNNEL WEB SPIDERS in NSW Funnel web spiders are a big black spider which like to burrow under rocks, around rotting logs and are often living hidden away in gardens. Heavy rain often washes FWS out of their hiding places so always be on the alert especially when gardening or digging. The funnel web spider in this photo was found recently in my backyard in Sydney!... FWS have a very poisonous and fast-acting venom and quick action can be life-saving. If anyone is bitten by a big black spider always call 000 immediately. Apply a pressure immobilisation bandage to the affected limb and stay still until the ambulance arrives. Call the Poisons Centre on 131126 for further advice or information. #poisonsinfo #funnelwebspiders #bigblackspiders

19.01.2022 TIME FOR A CUPPA? The Poisons information Centre regularly gets calls from people who have made themselves a cup of tea or coffee with water containing a descaler. Descalers help to remove mineral scale build up in kettles and coffee machines and are usually acidic. They can leave a bitter taste and cause irritation to the mouth, throat and stomach if swallowed. Not all descalers are the same and some products are more likely to cause symptoms.... To prevent an accidental exposure put a do not use note on your kettle or coffee machine whenever you are using a descaler. Call the Poisons Information centre on 13 11 26 for further advice following any exposure. #poisonsinfo #preventpoison #descaler

07.01.2022 This is incredibly concerning. Of the 3,810 Victorians who tested positive for coronavirus over the past three weeks, almost 90 per cent kept going about their business after they began to show symptoms. Thats 3,400 people who kept going to work. Kept going to the supermarket. Kept caring for loved ones.... Then, after having a test, 53 per cent did not isolate at home while they waited for the results. That means 2,056 people carried on as usual despite being concerned enough or sick enough to go and get tested. This is not about apportioning blame or pointing the finger. Its about recognising that far too many people are either not taking this seriously enough or theyre having to make an impossible choice. A choice between putting the safety of their colleagues and the community first and putting food on the table. Far too many people dont have sick leave entitlements. Far too many people cant afford to miss a shift. This is an indictment on the insecurity of our workforce and a conversation we as a society must have. But for now, we have to deal with the immediate health crisis were facing. If youre sick, get tested immediately. Stay home. Dont go to work. Waiting for the results has to mean exactly that. It cant mean Hopefully Ill test negative, so Ill just keep going to work in the meantime. The most important thing is to slow the spread. That means if you start to feel sick, you should assume you have the virus and behave accordingly. Stay home. Isolate. And keep your workmates and your loved ones safe.
