20.01.2022 Survey 216 to North Cape our first since the Mission Blue Kangaroo Island North Coast Hope Spot was declared on September 11th 2020. The first KI survey sin...ce late in February due to a combination of Covid-19 and bad weather was an absolutely beautiful day on the water. An opportune break in the weather and an available gap on fantastic Kangaroo Island Marine Adventures schedule led to a spontaneous survey for a small group of core volunteers. The weather was absolutely stunning with no wind and crystal clear water allowing for fascinating observations and excellent conditions for data collection. Fragmented groups of Bottlenose dolphins numbering 3 7 were observed from South Beacon to North Cape itself, but the highlight was a group of 8 Shortbeaked Common dolphins fishing in deep water off the cape and enjoying interacting with the boat and crew with numerous fly pasts! Unlike our Victor Harbor surveys on wonderful The Big Duck Boat Tours, these are a rare sighting on our Kangaroo Island coastal surveys and further exciting data for the growing catalogues. A delicious long lunch / debrief session at our Out of Town Office wonderful Emu Bay Lavender Farm, capped off a day out of the box for the core volunteers.
