24.01.2022 Elderly and need a dog walker? Pets for Life can help! By Richard Bruinsma Local residents the elderly and anyone with mobility constraints - who need help ca...ring for their pets can now turn to a local community support group for help. "Pets for Life" provides volunteers who will do a range of tasks to help pet owners who are elderly or have mobility constraints - tasks like simply walking a dog, to helping with washing and grooming, trips to the vet, and any range of helpful tasks to ensure the owner is able to keep the beloved pet living with them. For Sunshine Coast resident Margaret Elli, who has troublesome knees and can't walk like she used to, and her pet Dudley, the helpful service means they can continue living together. "It's certainly a great help to me, and peace of mind that he gets his walks every week," Margaret said. Dudley, a boisterous three-legged Beagle-King Charles Spaniard cross, gets the exercise he needs, and a little extra socialisation, thanks to Pets for Life volunteer Jarna Baudinette. The duo go for a half-hour walk together once a week. He also gets a second weekly walk with a second volunteer. "Dudley and I get on very well and I get on with Margaret very well," Jarna said. "I set out to volunteer but it doesn't really feel like it; I just get to catch up with Margaret and Dudley and I get to hang out." The "Pets for Life" service is operating now across the Sunshine Coast. It recognises the high value of pets as loyal companions for many residents that help provide comfort and quality of life, but also recognises the challenges of caring for the pets as the owners age or their mobility diminishes. Many seniors, and those with mobility constraints, have a pet they dearly love but as we age it can become more difficult to meet our pet’s physical needs such as exercise, bathing and grooming, and getting them to the vet, Pets for Life coordinator Mark Wischnat said. This wonderful program works by matching up pet owners with screened and trained volunteers who can provide weekly or regular assistance. The volunteers not only work alongside the pet owner as much as possible, but can also spend some time with the older person, offering companionship. The project is aimed at promoting healthy aging amongst seniors, addressing issues of social isolation, fostering neighbourhood connections, and promoting the health and wellbeing benefits of pet ownership. The completely free Pets for Life Project is run from the Caloundra Community Centre, but caters for senior pet owners from Caloundra to Noosa. The program is currently funded by the philanthropic group, the Tim Fairfax Family Foundation. For Margaret, Dudley and Jarna, it's been a perfect opportunity. Margaret has bad knees so needed help to make sure Dudley got the exercise he needed. And for Jarna, who lives in a unit complex that doesn’t allow pets, it also means she gets to have some fun times with a boisterous dog. "I just don’t think I could manage him at the moment, Margaret said. "It's marvellous for me, I make a donation to them because the service to me is like gold. "I know he's a lot happier; he gets excited when he sees Jarna. Pets for Life is looking for senior pet owners who think they could benefit from a little extra help, as well as interested volunteers. If you or someone you know would like to find out more about the free Pets for Life Project, please phone Mark on 5491 4000 or 0414 519 047.
