23.01.2022 Encore Theatre are proud to announce their Playbill for 2021. Season 1: GEORGE’S MARVELLOUS MEDICINE JAN 7-16 Written by Roald Dahl, adapted by David Wood. ... Directed by David Collins. Life is already hectic for George, but it gets even worse when her appalling Grandma comes to stay. Fed up of her rudeness, she mixes her a ‘new and improved’ medicine but the consequences are much more than she bargained for. After seeing the medicine in action, George’s father decides to try it on the animals next - with hilarious and calamitous results! (Please note, we’re still in negotiation with City of Monash to stage this production outdoors in Warrawee Park in Oakleigh. If we’re unable to proceed at this venue, then the show will be rescheduled for the mid-year school holidays at the end of June) Season 2: LORD ARTHUR SAVILE’S CRIME MAR 12-27 Written by Oscar Wilde, adapted by Constance Cox. Directed by Richard Burman. Based on the acclaimed story by Oscar Wilde, Lord Arthur Savile is engaged to the lovely Sybil Merton. Desiring a blissful married life, Lord Arthur is horrified when Sybil’s chiromantist Podgers reads his palm one night and determines he will commit murder. Desperate to rid himself of this unwanted expectation, Lord Arthur feels duty bound to get the murder over with sooner than later... Season 3: Vigil JUL 9-24 Written by Morris Panych. Directed by David Collins. This production will be its Victorian Premiere. If you don’t die soon, I think you’re going to kill me! When Kemp receives a phone call from his estranged aunt who claims she is old and dying, he travels across the country to pay her a visit; but as it turns out she’s not going just yet. As the seasons change and the weather turns from good to bad to good again, Kemp’s own dysfunctional youth and thwarted dreams come to light in this delightful black comedy. Season 4: cul-de-sac OCT 8-23 Written by John Cariani. Directed by Helen Ellis. This production will be its Australian premiere. Meet the Smiths, the Johnsons, and the Joneses. They live in a nice little cul-de-sac. And they're happy. Or at least trying to be. Over the course of a single spring day, the neighbouring couples confront the dead-end of their dreams and what happens when you pursue happiness with a vengeance. Booking inquiries can currently be made to [email protected], or 1300 739 099 (9am-9pm).

22.01.2022 As the COVID-19 situation slowly improves over the next few weeks, we expect to see restrictions in Melbourne begin to relax. When this happens and we start work on our next production, we'll be doing everything possible to protect the health of cast and crew, our other volunteers, the audience, and wider community. Encore will be guided by the recommendations from Live Performance Australia that were released yesterday, as well as from Monash Council closer to the time. Whe...ther there are any further setbacks or not, all measures taken by Encore to mitigate risks once we are back up and running again will be found here and on our website. In the meantime, keep keeping safe, we got this. We'll see you soon!

17.01.2022 VALE BERYL BOLAM Last week came the sad news that one of our Life Members, Beryl Bolam, had passed away. Kevin Trask was kind enough to write a few words of remembrance for Beryl for our Newsletter, which are reprinted here. ~~~... Sadly, we lost one of our long-time members on October 23 when Beryl Bolam passed away at Holmesglen Hospital in Moorabbin. Beryl was one of our founding members in 1997 and worked Front-of-House up until recent times. Beryl and her husband Dennis migrated to Australia from England in the 1950’s. Dennis was a Wing Commander with the Royal Air Force during the Second World War. They both acted in plays at Marillac Theatre. Tragedy struck when their son Warwick died of exposure on a snow skiing trip in 1980. Beryl continued acting in shows at Elwood Theatre and had roles in plays such as Crown Matrimonial, Granny Gum Nuts and The Whales of August with Eileen Nelson. Beryl was also President of Elwood Theatre for several years. She always kept active and traveled back home to England to see her family many times. After Dennis died in 2005, Beryl remarried and moved to Adelaide with her husband Ted. When Ted passed away, she came back to Melbourne to live at Classic Residences in Brighton. In her later years she was very active with U3A. We were delighted to attend her ninetieth birthday four years ago (as pictured). Beryl was an amazing lady and everyone loved her. She made a wonderful contribution to the theatre scene and to Encore Theatre. We will never forget her smile, sense of humour, and her strength. It was an honour to have known Beryl Bolam.

11.01.2022 As restrictions continue to relax, we begin looking ahead to next year's playbill and what will undoubtedly be some extraordinary theatre. Being able to create and perform for an audience again will be stunning in itself, but 2021 will also see Encore stage its first outdoor production! And another play will be a Victorian premiere! AND another play will be an Australian premiere! All will be revealed very soon. In the meantime, please enjoy this tantalising sneak peek at the poster art for next year's plays, courtesy of our wonderful designer, Belinda Buckingham.

08.01.2022 Despite postponing the rest of our playbill for this year, the Encore Committee has been hard at work securing a stellar run of plays for when we get back on our feet in 2021! Obviously, protecting our audiences' health remains our top priority, so keep an eye on here, our website, and our newsletter (register by emailing [email protected]) for updates. While our graphic designer is hard at work on next year's playbill, here's a sneaky-hinty-peek at what's coming. And possibly even more if we can squeeze it in - exciting times. Stay tuned and stay safe!
