24.01.2022 My COVID-19 Isolation Project We cant meet at the shed but there are plenty of projects waiting at home. This greenhouse upgrade is one of mine. Materials were mainly left-overs or re-births from earlier projects, some timber was destined for the wood heater. ... The only necessary purchases (with strict adherence to social distancing requirement) were some gang nails and extra clear cladding.

20.01.2022 The following item appears in the Star Newspaper dated 28th February. Star News Men find a home 28/02/2020 By Brendan Rees... Picture: Ex-Casey councillor Rosalie Crestani being presented a petition by Endeavour Hills Mens Shed president Trevor Ratcliffe in 2018. After nearly three years of lobbying, the 40-strong group finally got their wish after then Casey Councillors voted at their 18 February meeting to award a building contract for works to start at the Endeavour Hills site. The members have been using a shared space Essex Park Community Place which has been manageable for meetings but lacks the space to carry out their manual work. After receiving two submissions in December, council decided to award the tender contract to More Building Group Pty Ltd. However this is subject to approval by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning to build the Mens Shed as the reserve is on crown land. The project, which is expected to be completed by August, will include mechanical services, amenities, a kitchenette and accessible car parking. More Building Group has previously undertaken work with council, which council says have strong experience in delivering similar type and scaled projects. Endeavour Hills Mens Shed president Trevor Ratcliffe said the group was relieved they had struck a deal with council. Were certainly thankful to the councillors for their support in delivering this project, Mr Ratcliffe said. The announcement comes after the Mens Shed negotiated with council for a new home including submitting a petition in 2018, which garnered 1265 signatures. During this time the group has been dedicated in helping the community and undertaking voluntary projects for Endeavour Hills library and Parks Victoria. They have even used members sheds and garages to build toys, shelves, planter boxes and playground equipment for charities, schools and kindergartens and the Andrews Centre in Endeavour Hills. Mr Ratcliffe said the work space at Essex Park Community Place had proven challenging and the group were thrilled with the news. We have to pull out machinery out of storage, use it, clean up and put it back ready for the next group, he said. We havent been able to fully develop our program of health and wellbeing and also providing community service in the way that we would want to. Its not just a matter of meeting for a chat weve also got a range of social activities, excursions, and community field work. At the council meeting, ex- Casey councillor Rosalie Crestani thanked the men for their tireless work in the community and looked forward the construction of the new shed. This is our way to say thank you as well to ensure that a mens shed is established and they have somewhere further to serve and to go and network, she said.

Project 2 was a upholstering a reclining chair. And just completed Project 3 rejuvenating and re-upholstering an old dining chair. Project 4 will be creating a kitchen bench seat out of an old dining table. Photos left to right Before, During and After. Planning goes on for occupation of our new shed which is nearing completion.

13.01.2022 Today we very pleased to have received a very generous donation cheque from the members of the Endeavour Hills Police Station. Through their annual charity golf day the members support local charities and we have been very grateful recipients. The donation comes at a time when construction is about to begin on our new building. The funds will help us to establish ourselves in our new home, to deliver our health and well-being program and our community projects. ... We were also pleased to have had the opportunity to express our appreciation for their commitment to the difficult task that they have in holding the front line to keep our community safe. In more ways than one, we are grateful to the members of the Endeavour Hills Police Station. We are also pleased to say that we are considering the feasibility of developing a project in support the members of the Endeavour Hills Police Station and we look forward to exploring it further in the new year.

13.01.2022 A short report on an EHMS project done for Disaster Aid Australia (DAA) based in Hallam, Victoria. A team of EHMS volunteers helped build about 18 tanks for DAA during the period of September 2019 and June 2020. These tanks are used by DAA to demonstrate how the SkyHydrant water filter purifies river/well/rain water to a standard clean enough to drink. DAA are active supplying and assisting with installing water filter systems to areas in Bhutan, Philippines, etc., so that remote villages can have clean safe drinking water economically without the need for electricity and expensive infrastructure. Thanks to all the members of the project team for the 100 plus hours of volunteer work spent on this enjoyable task for DAA.
12.01.2022 COVID Project N0. 4 A corner shelf with clothes hanger for the laundry. This is mark 2. The first version was intended to have a chrome tube as the hanging rail but getting the supports at the right angle wasnt worth the bother. The fact that my stud finder found a phantom stud so that I had to lengthen the shelf supports didnt help either. So I gave up, bought a $3.50 rail from the hardware store and started again. But $3.50 is the total cost. The timber consists of floorboard off-cuts. Its a bit over-spec but will do the job. There are during and after photos. There isnt a before photo but you know what floorboards look like. I trimmed off the tongue and groove, gave the timber a sand and a lick of paint. So thats it ... nothing else to add.

12.01.2022 COVID Project 3. A custom built bench seat made to order from a re-birthed table top. Free through Marketplace ... just the right price! I had assumed that the top consisted of separate tongue and grooved planks or at least glued and clamped. To my surprise it was entirely made up of short finger jointed pieces. ... The pictures are taken before, during and after. Now running short of projects.

08.01.2022 De-bogged and De-barbed What do I miss about the Mens Shed while in social isolation?? I miss the weekly barbs from the blokes. So, I am removing some. This time from some recycled barbed wire. ... It is a bit tricky but, once de-barbed, the wire can be used for a trellis to espalier a Cherry tree. The Cherry is also receiving a second chance at life. It was initially planted in what, with recent rains, became a bog-hole. Half the roots were rotten and so they been removed. After pruning the top and a couple of hours in a bucket of Seasol it has been planted in a much drier place. It looks a bit sad but we will see what happens. The healthy espalier is an apple. It is my first espalier attempt. Not bad! Thanks to the blokes at the Mens shed I can now handle the barbs ... perhaps, in time, the cherry will be just as thankful!

07.01.2022 Construction Of The Endeavour Hills Mens Shed At their final meeting on Tuesday evening, the Councillors for the City of Casey approved a recommendation to accept a tender for and overall budget for the Design and Construction and that the Contract documents be signed and sealed. OUR THANKS TO OUR SUPPORTERS.... This comes after three years for searching for a site and working with Parks Victoria and the City of Casey. The site which has been selected is within the Sydney Pargeter Reserve, Power Road Endeavour Hills. It is anticipated that construction will take place forthwith and completion within 16 weeks of signing the contract. At this time we acknowledge and thank those who have strongly and selflessly supported us and advocated on our behalf: The Rotary Club of Endeavour Hills, especially Past Presidents Jean Harrison, Permi Ryat and John Cooper. The outgoing Mayor and Councillors of the City of Casey, in particular; Cr Rosalie Crestani, Cr Amanda Stapledon; and previous Councillor Rafal Kaplan. The Hon. Luke Donnellan MP, Minister for Child Protection and the Minister for Disability, Ageing and Carers (as the member for Narre Warren North); and Julian Hill MP, Federal Member for Bruce. The staff of the City of Casey. We look forward to developing our community service programme and activities which are focused on advancing the health and well-being of the Men of Endeavour Hills. EHMS.
06.01.2022 Working In The Police Paddocks We were please to have the opportunity to again work with Parks Victoria to enhance the use of public spaces. This time it is the Dandenong Police Paddocks. Our new home will be located within the Police Paddocks so we are keen for our public space efforts to be directed to that area. Other community projects will continue as they arise.... On Monday we removed redundant and, sadly, unsafe picnic tables and painted the toilet block. This was in preparation of the Oxfam Trail Walk which was due to commence on 27th of March. Unfortunately, the Oxfam web site indicates that the event has been cancelled. But ... our good work remains. Parks Victoria has also deferred volunteer work so our work in the Police paddocks is on hold.
04.01.2022 COVID Project No2 - Upholstery While the Mens Shed has been out of bounds the home workshop has been getting a workout. Social isolation certainly hasnt meant do nothing and nothing to do. Although the job list is shorter new projects seem to be appearing. Upholstering this chair is the second time around and I could not believe how I managed to make a good job of it the first time around, Fortunately I took a lot of photos when dismantling, I guess it looks O.K. I just hope that there is not to be a third time. Sharp blades and upholstered seats are not a good mix.

02.01.2022 Breaking new Ground - Our New Shed is Underway! During this past week the ground was broken to prepare a site for the building of our new 400 square metre purpose-built facility on the grounds of the Sydney Pargeter Reserve, Endeavour Hills. Who would have thought, when it was being used as a municipal tip in the mid-1970s, that the site would be the public asset which it is today.... Our expectation is that, in August this year, we will have re-located from the former Kindergarten building in Essex Park Drive and be operating from the new facility. The new facility will enable us to extend the health / well-being and community support services that we will be able to offer. This be even more important as our community recovers from the impact of COVID-19. From this perspective the timing could hardly be better. We also look forward to our membership increasing as we adjust and adapt our activities and projects to cater for a greater range of interests and the needs in our community. In that sense too, we will be breaking new ground! If you have would like to inquire about what the Endeavour Hills Mens Shed has to offer the men of Endeavour Hills, you can contact us by email at: [email protected]
