05.01.2022 Get your socks off for the Rotary100downunder centenary! Spearheaded by the Rotary Club of Port Macquarie West (https://www.facebook.com/Rotary-Club-of-Port-Mac...quarie-West-281715491844352) and supported by Rotary District 9650 and other Rotary clubs in the Hastings cluster, Rotary is endeavouring to break the Guinness World Records for the longest line of socks. In a significant event to celebrate both the centenary of Rotary ‘downunder’ and the Port Macquarie-Hastings bicentenary in April 2021, Rotary in Port Macquarie is hoping to build a 10,000-metre clothesline and peg 100,000 socks to it! The previous world record was set on May 17, 2014, in Halvania, Germany, where a 6066-metre clothesline hung 69,152 socks. The world record attempt is planned for June 4-5. More than 40,000 socks have already been collected and there are ‘sock bins’ in various locations around town for socks to be dropped into. Funds are being raised for four local charities: Endeavour Mental Health Recovery Clubhouse, YP SPACE MNC, Soldier On Australia, and the Hastings Education Fund. At the sock launch on March 3, the Lewis Land Group at Sovereign Hills donated $15,000 and a promise to double it if the world record is achieved. Activated Eco, a Melbourne-based supplier of stainless steel clothes pegs, is loaning Rotary up to 150,000 pegs, saving many thousands of dollars and avoiding the use of plastic pegs. It’s all coming together rather well, said project coordinator Trevor Gilson. When it’s all over, all the socks will be recycled or repurposed none will go to landfill, a great example of caring for our new Area of Focus the environment. So, search your washing machine and drawers for any odd socks and start collecting! You can post them to the Rotary Club of Port Macquarie West: PO Box 330, Port Macquarie NSW 2444. #Rotary #RotaryOpensOpportunities #R100 #DoingGood
