05.01.2022 This week is National Op Shop Week! For most of us, op shops are a place to find a bargain. But for Roxanne, they're much more than that! When Roxanne's rental fell through after moving from Perth to Broome, she and her best friend found themselves on the street. ... We were still looking for and applying to agencies to secure a rental property, but with no current address, minimal or no rental references and making below minimum wage, we never really had a chance," says Roxanne. After seven months on the streets, Roxanne was hired as a casual assistant with Salvos Stores, the step she needed to secure a rental property. Having somewhere to live and being employed not only gave me a sense of direction, but the ability to ensure I wouldn’t have to face homelessness again, she says.

02.01.2022 Recently The Salvation Army in Melbourne launched the "Community Hub" which will see police and paramedics being based at our centre in the CBD one day a week. The hub is a collaboration between the Salvos, City of Melbourne, Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria. It's an innovative new approach to solving Melbourne's homelessness crisis, particularly aimed at improving the health outcomes for people experiencing disadvantage. Major Brendan Nottle, Officer at The Salvation A...rmy Melbourne Project 614 (pictured right) says that having police and ambulance officers at the hub will help rough sleepers. "Agencies will be able to respond immediately; one example is medical assistance such as wound care," he says. The hub will be situated with all the other services currently provided by the Salvos in Melbourne including a cafe that serves more than 2000 free meals a week and an overnight safe space for rough sleepers to stay.
