20.01.2022 What is root canal treatment? Root canal (endodontic) treatment or therapy is a comfortable procedure designed to relieve pain and save your tooth. It commonly involves removing inflamed or infected dental pulp from inside the tooth. You can read more about dental pulp in our FAQs. When bacteria enter the pulp through cracks, decay or following a bump or knock to the tooth, the pulp becomes inflamed and the tooth and surrounding area will become sore. Common symptoms are incr...eased sensitivity to temperature (hot and cold), spontaneous aching, pain with biting, or pressure and swelling. Any of those symptoms may indicate the need for root canal treatment. The basic procedure involved in root canal therapy can be seen in the diagram below. 16.01.2022 Meet Our Team - Dr John McNamara Dr John McNamara’s patients benefit from more than 36 years of specialist experience and a keen interest in diagnosis and treatment planning, instrumentation, dental trauma, education and risk management. John graduated with Honours from the University of Queensland Dental School in 1978 and practised as a general dentist for a number of years before completing his postgraduate training in endodontics at the University of Adelaide. He joined t...he Endodontic Group (then Watkins Medical Centre) in 1984 and was instrumental in developing the postgraduate training program in Endodontics at the University of Queensland, where he served as Program Director for a number of years. In addition to lecturing extensively locally, nationally and internationally, John has served on the committees of multiple professional bodies and has also been awarded Fellowships of the International College of Dentists, the Academy of Dentistry International and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. 15.01.2022 Meet Our Team - Dr Ross Applegarth Dr Ross Applegarth has been with the Endodontic Group for over twenty-five years, joining soon after completing his Master of Endodontics at the University of Queensland. Ross has held executive positions with the Australian Society of Endodontology at state and federal levels, serving as Federal President between 2005 and 2007. Ross has been involved with endodontic teaching programs at all Queensland dental schools, and lectured extensivel...y throughout Queensland and internationally. He is currently involved in the undergraduate endodontic program at Griffith University. Ross has also delivered lectures and workshops on rotary instrumentation to both dentists and undergraduate students and has acted as an external examiner for the University of Queensland postgraduate endodontic program. He has more recently been involved in teaching general endodontics to dentists in Vietnam and Fiji. Dr Ross Applegarth practises at our Maroochydore, Aspley and Brisbane practices. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time pottering on his small farm in Eumundi with his family, and surfing on the Sunshine Coast with his daughters and friends.
