24.01.2022 Check out our latest COVID-19 video on Social Engagement Richard explains how Social Engagement is critical for your mental health. It’s important not to spend too much time on digital devices as it can create addictive patterns and sleep issues: https://youtu.be/UQB8ZyaIvws

24.01.2022 There are many attributes mentioned when it comes to naming good leaders. Some of these are personal attributes and some relate to the effect that leader has on its follower base, or community. Mark McGowan resonated with a large section of the West Australian community for not only his family values, convictions and strength, but also for the safety-making that had on individuals suffering from a felt sense of compromised safety during Covid 19. Safety is a foundational stat...e in humans that our brain devotes significant priority to creating and maintaining that safe state when it perceives we are unsafe. Anxiety signifies a lack of safety within ourselves. Mark tapped into a deep unconscious need that runs all of us, regardless of sex, culture or political belief. His acknowledged safety making of the West Australian community would then become a powerful individual unconscious driver of voter impulses in whom to vote for last weekend. The extreme result is evidence of this primal need in all of us. See more

24.01.2022 In today's video, Richard talks about how the impulse to fight originates from an underlying anxiety to deal with the threat of coronavirus and resolve it in an aggressive way. Control goes hand-in-hand with aggression. Some people feel out of control as they do not feel safe. They react towards the imposed controls of isolation and towards authority. These types of people should try and discharge the energy via the body and learn to exhale more deeply. You can check out the video here: https://youtu.be/ikKzxDWYjog

24.01.2022 What alot of adults do not appreciate is that our children do not have the social skills to emotionally manage a large group of "friends" online that they may have gathered under their social media and gaming accounts. Social history and psychological studies show that adult human brains can manage and cope with up to a maximum of 150 social contacts. This is called "Dunbars number". Our children's brains cannot cope at this adult level so how much danger is there to our chil...d's mental health when say their 500 followers start to turn and troll them, or a school cohort of say 700 students starts to bully them. This is the overwhelm that drives tween suicide after online bullying, as the social engagement part of their brain cannot cope with the engulfing demolition of their under-developed but emerging sense of OK self, value and purpose. Letting our children go online to build a large online following is a loaded gun in terms of the negative consequences that may play out, and which children may internalise rather than share with siblings or parents. Self harm and extreme reactions may occur from this place.

24.01.2022 In this video, Richard describes how as social animals, once we find personal safety within ourselves we tend to move towards the herd. Some people who have a caretaking or people pleasing nature may seek out someone as a protector. They may not have good boundaries nor good self regulation and end up attracting someone who is abusive and toxic. Check out the video here: https://youtu.be/b9_dK87ThV8

22.01.2022 The tragic story of AFL star Danny Frawley is cautioning about the risk of suicidal thoughts stemming from underlying trauma or depression. We see that affected persons will often put on a functional social persona to those in their life, but collapse behind closed doors into their despairing inner hell. This may disarm family and friends as to the gravity of the state of mind of that person, and they may suddenly surprise via suicide or an extreme action without forewarning. We encourage everyone to get mental health support for themselves or loved one, and to not try and tough it out or soldier on.

14.01.2022 Today's COVID19 video explains how the way we handle stress and anxiety is governed by our defense mechanisms such as the Fight, Flight, Freeze or Attachment responses. While in lockdown, some of us struggle to relate to our partners and family. We may have difficulty relating or creating healthy boundaries with each other. It's interesting to note that since this crisis has escalated in recent weeks, that the levels of Domestic Violence has risen by 12% and of Consumption of Alcohol has risen by 40%. 14.01.2022 An article Demand for Illegal Drugs in Therapy published in the West Australian highlighted the emerging trend of mental health practitioners experimenting with their clients on using drugs such as MDMA and magic mushrooms, in processes attempting to bypass personal blocks and defences, to access and release trauma. This approach violates numerous regulatory and professional standard and obligations in place to protect client’s safety. The issue at hand is that clients with... PTSD and complex trauma may become overwhelmed with what arises, may re-traumatise, and the therapist may not have formal trauma training to safely integrate the clients, if things go astray. We recommend caution to anyone considering such a therapy approach. Bessel Van Der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost trauma practitioners, cautions that despite observed benefits, that psychedelic substances.can easily be misused through careless administration or poor maintenance of therapeutic boundaries. 09.01.2022 Tik Tok is the latest teen social media trending platform to consume the time and attention of our children. It comes after Musically and then Instagram had been the go-to site for teenage expression. Many Boomer age adults have no understanding nor real parental oversight of what their children get up to on these sites. The current fad to post from school may contravene school policies on both social media usage, and allowing the school brand to be used in content. This is m...erely a symptom of the unregulated use of social media by children. More insidious is parents need to consider how the content created by their children is being harvested by the tech companies, and how that content may be used to profile them, or be resold to third parties or audiences who want content of teenagers that can be portrayed as sexualised. Troubling still is the cyber-security community idea that in ten or twenty years time that this content could come back to haunt its originators via shaming or blackmail by the new content owners. .

07.01.2022 Richard explains how during lockdown, some people tend to busy themselves with projects or exercise in an attempt to avoid feelings. There may be avoidance between couples or in families as people retreat to their own rooms to avoid conflict. Some people find it difficult to live in the present moment and numb out via addictions etc. Check out the video: https://youtu.be/1FqIHuGTIp8

06.01.2022 Research released has shown how the trend on social media to portray women in a unrealistic perfectionistic way is turning the average woman away from liking or following influencers or content creators who curate such images. These images and portrayals create a comparison mind that inevitably judges oneself to be the lesser, not OK, and often manipulated to buy or do something towards improving oneself towards the unobtainable perfect state. Some will give up in self hatred... and despair, impacting their mental health and possibly leading them towards low self esteem driven behaviours such as comfort eating, or bulimia, or anorexic behaviours, linked to body image. Our advice is to avoid such social media sites and images.

04.01.2022 Richard explains how someone with a tendency towards the Freeze Response is prone to re-enact underlying trauma when they are met with a threat. Underneath the defence is a desire to flee (flight response) as reflected in the tense muscles. The person tends to be stiff and rigid and can easily fragment and go into collapse, causing anxiety to surface. They have a lot of self-control as a safety making strategy. When they isolate, they end to ruminate, worry and develop black and white thinking. They need to connect with their bodies and ground themselves using a gentle form of exercise. They also need to breathe deeply in and out. Check out this video for more information: https://youtu.be/u_aQgYYFfEM

03.01.2022 In this video, Richard Boyd explains the importance of establishing and maintaining a daily routine as a resilience building factor. This is important for people working from home as well as those of you who are newly unemployed to help prevent boredom kicking in and ruminating thoughts taking you over: https://youtu.be/G5UKvdzgSX8

01.01.2022 One of the best activities that parents can cultivate in their children is the reading of real paper based books. Books have never been cheaper and they offer important developmental foundations for children and teenagers. A young child's naturally magical thinking responds and is enriched by the important ritual of a parent reading to them during the day or at night before sleep. The parent conveys much in the rich adult intonation of voice, emotional expression, facial ges...tures, and linking of words and ideas to expression. The mirror neurons of the child get a work out through the mirroring process between parent to child, whilst active imagination thought creation grows the child's natural curiosity, reality formation, and fantasy formation capabilities. There is no true digital inter-activeness of this critical type on the market, despite the hype of educational digital apps etc. They are in reality sophisticated response activation technologies instead. Older children learn to read alone and value the solace and aloneness in books as special "me" time that is a critical developmental downtime and nervous system regulation practice. Digital books are not of this nature as they still stimulate the eye sense of readers due to the blue-white light of digital device screen rendering. One positive way to grow your children is to include real book reading in their development via cultivating reading as a leisure activity.
