Mark has led Yallourn through both good and challenging times, but has always had the best interests of Yallourn and its people at heart. We will miss Mark, but know he will be busy with his many interests and hobbies. From the Yallourn team we wish both Mark and his wife Sue all the very best in retirement.... In the video below, Mark reflects on his career, Yallourn and retirement.

24.01.2022 Recently, the Yallourn Power Station took delivery of two new generator transformers. The new transformers were proudly manufactured in Victoria at the Wilson Transformer Company in Melbourne, and replace our existing Unit 2 generator transformers. In the New Year, each transformer will be filled with oil and then tested prior to their installation during the Unit 2 major outage in July.... In this short video, Electrical Engineer, Steve Dargan explains more about the role of a transformer, and why replacements were needed. A big thankyou to Wilson Transformer Company , VicRoads and others who have contributed to the success of this project.

24.01.2022 Yallourn apprentice, Carmel Jenkinson is among the finalists for this week’s BHP 2020 Women in Resources National Awards. The awards recognise and celebrate the achievements of women across Australia’s resources sector as well as showcasing the diverse careers available to women in the sector. Carmel is one of seven finalists vying for the Thiess Outstanding Australian Tradeswomen, Operator or Technician Award.... I was super excited to hear of my nomination, says Carmel. Awards like these are really important for providing a model for women contemplating a career in a trade or technical field. The EnergyAustralia Yallourn site is a really encouraging and positive environment, and everyone’s been so supportive through my whole apprenticeship. Carmel in in the fourth year of her electrical apprenticeship and will undertake a further year to obtain a dual trade qualification as an electrician and instrumentation controls tradesperson. 2020 has been a big year for Carmel. In June she was named winner in the Outstanding Victorian Trade, Operator or Technician category of the Minerals Council of Australia Women in Resources Awards. Carmel’s colleague and friend, Sara Stanvi, also at Yallourn was a nominee for the award. "Carmel is such a shining example of someone who has followed her career aspirations, and in doing so is a shining example for others," says Mark Pearson, Head of Yallourn. "For Carmel to be acknowledged in this way, it once again highlights the calibre of our apprentices as well as the quality of the mentoring they receive from those around them at Yallourn". "We are all very proud of Carmel's achievements'. The awards are being live streamed at 3.30 pm AEST 16 September. Watch Team Carmel getting behind Carmel’s nomination.

23.01.2022 This week is a very important one for the Yallourn Power Station, as we welcome our replacement station transformers for Unit 2. The two new transformers are being transported from Wilson Transformer Company in Glen Waverley, with the first unit having successfully traveled part of the journey on Sunday night. The information below from VicRoads explains how the transporting of the loads has the potential to impact late night traffic heading east along the Princes Freeway. ...We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause to motorists. So what does a transformer do? What does it transform? These transformers are the last step in our energy production process. They step up the voltage from the generator at 20kV to 220kV for the overhead tower lines, to deliver the energy we generate to the transmission network and ultimately our customers. So Why do they need to be replaced? These new transformers will replace the original transformers installed in early 1970, and are close to the end of their usable life. They will be installed during the Unit 2 major outage in the winter of 2021 and will contribute to the reliable operation of Unit 2 after they are installed. Each transformer weighs approximately 142,700 kg's and is 8 metres long, 3 metres wide and 4.5 metres tall.

22.01.2022 It’s #AussieBirdCount week. We thought we would share this video of our friends at the Latrobe Valley Field Naturalist Club who regularly adventure to our rehabilitated Yallourn Morwell River Wetlands

21.01.2022 WHAT ARE WE UP TO? If you regularly travel the road between Tyers and Yallourn North (the C103), you may have noticed some activity just inside the EnergyAustralia Yallourn boundary, east of Yallourn North. So what exactly are we up to? Well hopefully this post provides some clarity.... All the shining new equipment, excavation machinery and lighting is EnergyAustralia building, connecting and commissioning our new Saline Water Basin and associated infrastructure to take us into the future and post closure. So what’s a Saline Water Basin and what does it do ? The new basin and the associated pipework form part of the system that recycles & disposes of saline water from the ashing system at Yallourn Power Station, which is an output of generating electricity. The new basin replaces the existing basin which is close to the end of its operational life. The main activity visible from the road during September is the installation and connection of a new saline outfall pipeline which will be connected from the Saline Water Basin to the Saline Outfall system, which the other generators also utilise. Due to the high levels of recent rainfall, and to mitigate against erosion, a shallow diversion drain has been created to drain the area adjacent to the excavation works which diverts surface water from this area for 40 metres along the inside of EnergyAustralia’s security fence line and into a natural low-lying depression on EnergyAustralia land. The work area and drain are some 100 metres from Anderson’s Creek and there is no sign of water escaping EnergyAustralia property nor impacting the Creek. Following on from EPA approvals, the Saline Water Basin project commenced in 2016. It is expected that the installation of these works will be completed by November with the complete system operational by December 2020. Further vegetative rehabilitation and screening works are likely to commence during 2021.

At EnergyAustralia we acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the traditional custodians of this country and their connection to culture, land and community.

09.01.2022 You may have seen the recent news about the Yallourn power station being retired in mid-2028. Its big news and with big news, comes questions. We are hosting 3 community sessions across Moe, Yallourn North and Morwell and we would love to chat about this announcement.... We hope to see you there!

09.01.2022 Today we announce our plan to retire the Yallourn Power Station in mid-2028. The Yallourn power station and mine has been powering homes for 100 years, operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and employs 500+ people so we know this news may impact the community in different ways. We will make available a multimillion-dollar package to help Yallourn workers plan, reskill or retrain for their future. This support is in addition to worker entitlements. We want Yallourn worke...rs to have a say in how this support is delivered and will now begin a process to understand individual needs. We will build new storage capacity in the Latrobe Valley through a 350 MW, four-hour utility-scale battery project to be built at the Jeeralang power station that will be completed by 2026. This ensures storage is built to support more renewable energy in Victoria, before Yallourn closes. The energy transition is too important to leave to chance a plan that supports people, the Latrobe Valley community and locks in energy storage capacity before Yallourn retires will ensure the smoothest transition possible. This is Day One of our long-term plan to deliver the clean energy transformation for all. In the coming weeks we will hold community drop in sessions in Moe, Yallourn North and Morwell which will provide an opportunity for community members to ask questions of, and provide feedback to the Yallourn team. You can find out more about the Yallourn retirement here: https://bit.ly/2OjYPyH #EnergyAustralia #CarbonNeutral2050 #CleanEnergyTransition
