09.01.2022 W H Y C H A N G E I S D I F F I C U L T by Energy Health At Energy Health, we make the connection that behavioural change is a key health and wellbeing st...rategy towards living a healthy and balanced life. Today we are going to look at the topic of change, and we are going to identify some key strategies that you can start implementing in your life, so you can move closer towards the goals you want to achieve. Okay, so lets get real here - change is often tough, and in some cases, near impossible. But does it really have to be that difficult, and is change itself the real challenge, or the real issue here? Change becomes difficult when we havent committed to it, or we havent thought too much about it. Need some proof? When was the last time you set a new year resolution and followed it through to completion, let alone even started it? Chances are it was done on a whim, with not a lot of thought, further impeded by little or no action, and was probably moth balled 15 minutes later. You see, thats where change gets a bad name. Change never had a chance to get off the ground in that situation. Change itself wasnt the problem the strategy and approach was. To initiate real change, we need to buy in to that change. Hoping things will change, praying things will change, may be the icing on the cake, at best, but first up we need the cake to put it on! Change is often difficult because we develop habits that challenge the very chang e we want to see in our lives. We may want to give up a bad, or more to the point, an unwanted habit, but if we keep reinforcing behaviours that perpetuate that habit, that feed that habit, then change is not going to happen anytime soon - or ever. So in simple speak, we need to change our behaviours to reflect the change we want to see and experience. The key is to build on your successes, and to acknowledge the efforts and the evidence you are achieving towards the change you want to see - no matter how small or seemingly insignificant those changes might appear to be. You have to be able to see the long game and build towards it celebrating all of those moments of success along the way. This also means that sometimes things are not always going to go exactly to plan. For example, you may want to give up drinking alcohol every day of the week. You enjoy a drink, but find its costing you too much, putting a few more kilos on you than you would like, and its ruining a lot of your weekends with long sleep ins and hangovers. The first week you manage to reduce your alcohol intake. You managed to get out of bed early on a Saturday for the first time in 5 years, and you also spent $50 less at the bottle shop. Now before you get to week two, its important to acknowledge what you were able to achieve. In fact, you should document your victories in a journal, so you have REAL evidence of your efforts. Its this evidence that will demonstrate to you that you are starting to challenge, and change, old habits. Week 2 might see a step backwards, a little more intake than week one, but all in all, some moments where you were able to change old habits. Document the successes. It might have been 1.5 glasses of wine on Wednesday night where in the past you usually drank two or more. So what can you start doing today if you are wanting to change some things in your life? Get a journal. Document everything you do that demonstrates your efforts to change. Focus on the things or the situations you want to achieve... NOT... the things you cannot change. You need to build momentum based on the things you are achieving, and the behaviours you are experiencing. Focus on what you want. Behave your way to success. Build on your strengths. Acknowledge you may have a way to go, and keep focusing on the change you want to experience. And if you havent already, go back and read our recent post on gratitude, and see how strategies around appreciation and acknowledgement, can ramp up your chances for real change in your life as well. #home2work #energyhealth

08.01.2022 S A V E T H E D A T E The MInd Games is on again and we cant wait! Put February 26th in the diary as the most fun day of the year! Goodness knows we all... need some fun right now. Stay tuned as we announce our sponsors over the coming weeks and stay tuned for our launch and a few new additions this year too. Come and wave the red flag on mental health once again

08.01.2022 Sedentary Lifestyles How many hours do you sit for each day? About 8 you say? What about sitting at breakfast? Lunch? At night on the couch? Is the number stil...l 8? More than often, once I go through this with my clients the numbers change dramatically, and in COVID times this has become more of an issue than ever! What is sedentary behaviour? Any waking behaviour which expends very little energy. Sitting, also known as sedentary behaviour is one of the main health issues in the office environment. In a nutshell, sedentary behaviour means sitting for prolonged periods with very little movement. This might be at your desk, in meetings, in your car, on a flight (in pre-COVID times!) or watching TV. Research suggests that you should sit for no more than half of your 8 working hours per day and you need to try and move more for the standing ones. So, why is it a problem? A car-commuting, desk-bound, TV-watching lifestyle is very harmful to your health. All the time we spend sitting behind a steering wheel, slumped over a keyboard, or slouching in a meeting is linked to increased risks of heart disease, diabetes, cancer, obesity and depression to the point that experts have labelled this modern-day health epidemic the sitting disease. With the rise of office work, the use of cars and buses rather than walking or bicycles, and the rise of leisure pursuits like TV and computer games that favour the couch potato, the world has become more sedentary than ever before. The World Health Organization estimates that 95 percent of the worlds adult population is inactive, failing to meet minimum recommendations for health of 30 minutes of moderate to intense physical activity five times a week. The national guidelines for exercise is 30 minutes per day, there are not yet any actual guidelines for sedentary behaviours but the latest research is suggesting, for every 30 consecutive minutes of sitting, stand up and move for at least 5 minutes. What about if I exercise? Unfortunately, outside of regularly scheduled exercise sessions, active people sit just as much as their couch-potato peers. If you smoke and exercise daily you are at high risk of chronic disease, unfortunately if you exercise hard daily but sit for long periods you are still at high risk just like if you smoked! Have you heard of the Sitting is the New Smoking? So, what can you do: Move for 5 minutes every 30 minutes (try our mini movement sessions) Ride to work rather than drive Not going to work at the moment. Go for an early morning walk or a lunch time one Do some stretches on the floor when watching TV Try walking meetings when you can Use a standing desk Have standing meetings and add stretch breaks for your teams Move more out of work time Move the bin as far away as possible, and while youre at it, the printer too! Even breaks as short as one minute can improve your health Set reminders: Use gadgets for good: put alarms on your computer or phone to prompt you to stand up every 30 minutes while at work. Give yourself a daily goal, like getting in 10000 steps, and download apps like Garmin Fit, Fitbit, Stand Up, Headspace, Water Reminder, Stretches, Heart Rate, Quit, MyFitnessPal to track your activity and health levels throughout the day Drink more: Refilling your bottle will require you to make more trips to the kitchen and the bathroom Take phone calls while standing up. If you have the space, pace around and stretch

07.01.2022 The Accidental Recluse by Kym Goodes Welcome back to another week of showering less and eating more. This week flew past in a blur that has shifted from virtual... reality to almost reality - with some real-time moments occurring as we start to put the toe back into the waters of previous normality. Hubster and I had dinner with friends this week and I also met a couple of people in person for coffee- I was so excited, I spent days planning my wardrobe! This started me wondering, what if you have spent 8 - 10 weeks in a new working (or other) relationship with someone but youve only engaged with them on Zoom, or Skype, or Teams or FaceTime or some other form of on-screen video interaction. What if that is the only way you have met with them and what will it be like when you meet them for real? What is their expectation of you and you of them? What can you tell about someone from their on screen presence, what is real and what is fake? Who has been catfishing? (Yes, I really do have that many questions and more running around inside my head at the same time, all the time). My first thought is you might be able to tell a bit about a person from the kind of video meeting software they use. For example, Skype users are so yesterday - this is the old, the original, the traditional, yes its solid, but not so dependable.....quite frankly, I suspect Skype users have commitment issues. First its Skype, then its Skype for business, and next thing you know theyre sending you through a Zoom invite - theyve found something better and jumped ship. Just like that, after years of Skype theyve gone to the first new next best thing that pings up in front of them. FaceTime users are much more relaxed and more like to be family and friends, although in the early days of the new world of the Rony video meetings some work colleagues tried to use the weekend software mid-week - sort of the equivalent of turning up to the office (pre virus) wearing your Saturday night party outfit. A virtual walk of shame if Id ever seen one. I suspect this was also a personality indicator sticking within their comfort zone of Facetime rather than embracing the more professional suite of options that are a little more complex to use. My observation is that a Facetimer is also where you are going to pick up those with limited self-awareness. An example of this is the relaxed nature of a Facetimer who is then heard chomping away on some loud food item like chips or bikkies and cheese - not realising the distance between their mouth, their chewing and crunching and the microphone is quite different to a usual wine and cheese get together on the couch distance. Then there is the avid backgrounder and every meeting they pop up in a new part of the world. These guys are so much more hipster than the Microsoft Meetings dudes and are up for a good fake background, making it an absolute big reveal for the personality type. The fake backgrounds reveal a lot. Sort of like the catfishing of video-conferencing. Are you a local traveller or an international traveller? Or maybe you and Sir Richard Branson have already headed into outer-space together and that is why you have the solar system or the surface of the moon as your Zoom background you adventurer you! Seriously, I quite like the Tasmanian scenes and promoting our beautiful island, and it is actually where we are right now. But the Golden Gate bridge? Does anyone really think you might be there right now? Or the Eiffel Tower? Like any good online trend, the creatives have really gone all out over the last four or five weeks. You can now Zoom from Homer Simpsons couch, the Titanic (seriously that would go down well in a current cruise ship industry discussion meeting), sitting next to the Tiger King, or, one of my favourites, with the actual Brady Bunch original split screen on your split screen confusing much! And of course, you can turn yourself into any number of Mr Potato Head designs, but Id rather not talk about Peter Dutton in my blogs so we will leave that image right there. And what about that feeling of having to wait in the waiting room of life, because Zoom is now our lives and so in the waiting room on Zoom is, by definition the waiting room of life. Waiting to be let into a meeting is a kind of weird feeling.depending on how long youve been left waiting can really erode the confidence of those already feeling a little insecure. Everyone else knows you are waiting, they can see it on their screens, and they all start talking about you.oh look, Kyms in the waiting room, lets leave her there a little longer while we talk about her. I can imagine the wine and chip chomping Facetime counselling session with a good friend that evening I told you they didnt like me, it took 130 seconds for me to be let into the meeting room on Wednesday and when Jane from accounts turned up they let her straight in. Of course I have to mention the video conferencing distracters. These are the people that multi-task during video calls and/or forget during long video meetings they are actually on a screen in full view of everyone. My personal experiences of the strangest visuals so far include a woman ironing while participating, a guy joining in a meeting from his dinghy (he was in his own municipality by the way) and a guy who yawned constantly, stretched and occasionally scratched his belly in full view of everyone else in the meeting no catfishing there I can assure you (well, unless he was actually George Cluny and he was reverse catfishing???). My observation is the longer video meetings go for, the more relaxed people become and that is when some strange on screen behaviours kick in but in my experience thats just like real life and relationships really. Last but by no means least in the video conferencing personality types is the constant muters and unmuters. The muters are hilarious, so much to say, but no one can hear them, and they are talking so much they cant hear others yelling at them to unmute your microphone Jane. Hubster has prayed every evening that someone will invent a Kym muting facility in our home, but all the creatives are too busy on fake backgrounds right now. Then we know who the cant follow instructions and dont listen types are. Despite the instructions by the host at the beginning of the meeting asking everyone to mute, they dont. So you can hear everything going on in their home, papers moving around, the dog scratching and licking itself, kettle boiling, washing up underway, toilet flushing, kids fighting. And while you are hearing all of that it is virtually impossible to hear what you actually need to hear. The best part of the unmuter scenario is when the host and others start by quite politely saying um, can I just remind everyone to mute your microphones when youre not speaking I just want to name and shame and yell at the person Jane, put yourself on mute, we cant hear what George Cluny is saying. So what will happen when we emerge from the world of video life and start meeting some of the people we may not have met in person before? Will we carry with us these judgments of their personality traits based on their zoom worlds? Will we sarcastically say hey, great to see you, when did you fly back from San Francisco and why arent you in quarantine?. Or will those who have worked hard to hide some of their real lives playing out behind them be exposed named and shamed when they are back in the room for real? So in closing this weeks blog, can I just let all know that at no time over the last 8 weeks did I actually say I was 32, just that in my head I was. And at no time did I say I was tall, I just didnt mention I wasnt and boosted my chair up really high or sat on a stool. As the accidental recluse re-emerges into the world, she does so confident in the knowledge that she will bring with her all her own personality traits, faults and heels. So dust off the welcome mat, Im looking forward to seeing you soon.

03.01.2022 M I N D F U L N E S S By Energy Health At Energy Health we understand the importance of simplifying key messages and concepts, so you can use that information, ...and make real and meaningful progress towards your goals and aspirations each and every day of your life. Mindfulness is certainly one area that is often misunderstood and confused with a number of similar approaches. Today we are going to simplify it for you and present it in a way that makes sense. First up, lets look at what Eckhart Tolle (author of the bestselling book The Power of Now) has to say about mindfulness; Mindfulness is being in the present moment without judgement. So, mindfulness is about being present. Its also about being in a state of mind or being - without judgement - when we are being present. Being present is about being in the moment and paying attention (noticing) to what is going on around you, and within you. Listening is a key component of this, so too is the ability to be able to slow down your thoughts and just be with yourself. Mindfulness is simply about observing your thoughts without judgement. Is it a form of meditation? It can be. But rather than get caught up in the meaning behind the words, simply understand the importance of the process in becoming more aware of your thoughts and just being with them. So, what does all of that mean, and importantly, how can you bring some mindfulness into your life right now? The key is to understand the contrast, and the difference, between doing and being. To quote Dr Wayne Dyer; Are you a human doing or are you a human being. We spend our lives in the busy pursuit of doing. We are told and programmed by the society we live in, to keep doing, keep working, keep moving, keep consuming, and to keep wanting. With that focus on doing, is it any wonder that a state of being and mindfulness is so elusive and misunderstood by many of us? Our value, our status, and our importance is often centred around our ability and capacity to keep on doing. Want proof? When was the last time you heard someone of any note in the modern world being referred to as a great meditator, or good at spending time doing nothing or no thing? Our society does not value being anywhere near the value of doing. We live in a physical world of outcomes, of results, of getting things done and working to deadlines. These things are an important and necessary part of living in a modern world, and a part of our everyday lives, so how can we continue living in a modern world and be mindful at the same time? We simply start paying more attention - we start noticing our lives more. We create opportunities to be present we start creating a space for our inner world to announce itself slowly but surely as being real and valuable. How long do we need to be mindful and to be present? We simply start at the beginning. Sometimes even 30 seconds can seem like an eternity, as we draw our attention inwards, and just stay in that moment, and start to get comfortable with the silence. We can do it on a walk, on a bus, in a park, before, during, or after a meal, in fact we can be present with ourselves (we can do it with others as well, stay tuned for more about that later on) at any time we choose. The good news? You dont need permission, a membership to a club, or a special sacred belief system, and you certainly dont need to wear fancy clothes either to experience the power of the present moment in your own life. Being with yourself, and allowing and enabling yourself to simply be, is the beginning of a special new relationship that you will start to develop in your life. That special new relationship is with you.
