25.01.2022 The People’s Choice Award for this year’s Napier Waller Art Prize goes to Gary Ramage for his work, ‘Afghan diggers’ ghosts at the AWM’ (2020). Gary receives a cash prize of $5000. Congratulations, Gary! Artist statement:... My work is a tribute to the Australian artist Will Longstaff. His painting Menin Gate at Midnight has always held a special place in my heart. It inspired me to recreate a photographic image of ghostly figures at the Australian War Memorial. In his painting, Longstaff depicts thousands of ghostly soldiers marching across a field in front of the Menin Gate war memorial. I obviously could not recreate this, so instead I made a photograph representing the diggers killed in combat while serving in Afghanistan, a conflict I have covered [as a photo journalist] for more than ten years. Due to COVID 19 restrictions, on Anzac Day 2020 the usual crowds of thousands paying their respects at the Australian War Memorial were absent. I wanted to create an image that imagined the fallen there instead. My photograph of ghostly figures on the site captured in a single photographic exposure is the result. Here is their spirit, in the heart of the land they loved; and here we guard the record which they themselves made. C.E.W. Bean. The Australian War Memorial was located in direct line of sight of Parliament House as a constant reminder to the nation, so we do remember them. Thanks to everyone who voted and all the artists who entered this year. The Napier Waller Art Prize is open to former and current Australian Defence Force personnel. It encourages artistic excellence, promotes the transformative power of creativity, and raises awareness of the experiences and talent of service personnel. #NWAP #NWAP2020 @awmemorial @rslnsw
25.01.2022 ALLIED MATESHIP LIVES ON: Gurkha Veteran Gurung Kiran was on his morning run this week when he stopped to purchase some knitted poppies from RSLWA's Poppy Ladie...s in Kings Park and Botanic Garden. Four hours later, he was still there lending a hand to our hard-working ladies as they "unplanted" the 40,000-plus poppies used in this year's installation. As Gurung said, the spirits of the fallen would be smiling down on our ladies, in recognition of their tireless efforts to honour them. Thankyou Gurung, our ladies will welcome you back any time with open arms. Jai Gurkha! Lest we forget! #rslwamateship See more

24.01.2022 In Memory Of Sarbi, (11 September 2002 - 27 March 2015) - Australia's most decorated war dog. Sarbi was decorated with three medals of honour... the War Dog Ope...rational Medal, the Canine Service Medal, and RSPCA Purple Cross. A dog park in Brisbane is named in her honour and a sculpture of her guards the grounds. Sarbi was an Australian special forces explosives detection dog that spent almost 14 months missing in action in Afghanistan having disappeared during an ambush on the 2nd of September 2008. Sarbi was later rediscovered by an American soldier, and was reunited with Australian forces pending repatriation to Australia. Sarbi's handler, Corporal David Simpson, who was one of nine Australian soldiers injured in the ambush, was said to have never given up hope of finding her, and was profoundly relieved at her recovery. Sarbi died as a result of a brain tumour on the 27th of March 2015. Lest We Forget. Info from Wikipedia... photo from Australian Army website.

21.01.2022 On this sad day we honour the sacrifice of PTE Luke Worsley, who lost his life on 23 November 2007 in an attack against Taliban leaders and their supporters in Oruzgan Province, Afghanistan. Luke, 26, had deployed with Bravo Commando Company Group and was serving with Special Operations Task Group "Luke was the first man of the team through the door and was met by enemy forces that opened fire at close range, resulting in Luke being killed almost instantly," 4RAR commanding officer LTCOL Mark Smethurst said at the time. "Luke's actions upon entering the room, warning of the enemy threat, almost certainly saved the lives of other members of his team." You are in our thoughts, Luke. May you rest in peace

Private Togo said he was surprised and humbled by the awarding of the commendation. Drone racing is so much more than putting on goggles and flying a drone around a field. The spirit of mateship in the team, the sense of purpose and the real life skills that you get from drone racing is so rewarding" added Private Togo. Drone racing is rapidly emerging as a growing sport largely because of its accessibility, low cost of equipment and first-person pilot view of the race action. 07.01.2022 Future leaders embark Adelaide Her Majesty’s Australian Ship Adelaide has provided 170 future Naval leaders with an appreciation of operations and life at sea. ...The trainees from New Entry Officer Course (NEOC) 63 enjoyed a successful time at sea thanks to the co-operation and planning between the Ship’s Company, the various departments and the RAN College (RANC) staff. The New Entry Officer (NEO) and their support staff embarked in Adelaide from Fleet Base East, in Sydney, to sail for just over a week on what was the beginning of life at sea for the majority of the trainees. The NEOs were kept busy by integrating with different departments on a daily basis, participating in whole ship training such as damage control and completing practical leadership exercises. As a training platform, the LHDs provide the trainees with exposure to a number of activities that are not necessarily present on other fleet units. This includes Dock and Amphibious Operations and Air Operations, utilising the MRH-90, all of which are major capabilities for Task Group operations. The NEOs were provided with briefs from members of each department and performed duties side by side with the ship’s sailors. In a show of appreciation, the Commanding Officer of RANC, Commander David Shirvington, presented a number of college coins to those sailors who were identified as being particularly instrumental in facilitating training for the NEOs. One such recipient, Seaman Aviation Georgie Nikora, found the experience of assisting the trainees very fulfilling. I didn’t realise how interested they would be in what the aviation department does but they were always keen to learn more, Seaman Nikora said. I guess it helps that I really love my job too and the trainees obviously picked up on my enthusiasm. While Adelaide’s ship’s company felt privileged to have played a part in contributing to the education of NEOs, the Ship is now undertaking her new tasking as the Humanitarian Aid and Disaster Recovery (HADR) response vessel over the coming months. ‘United for the common good’
