22.01.2022 What’s the point ? I’m never going to see inflatable dragons in real life - why wouldn’t you train with something more realistic? Humans tend to focus on the o...bject instead of the conversation. Many people will say my horse is fine with (insert thing here - dogs / cats / umbrellas/ bunting - whatever) and that’s how we tend to approach training - once my horse has seen or is ok with xyz then that is done forevermore. And similarly, my horse hasn’t seen that before becomes an issue. When we focus on the approach, the conversation, the training, then it doesn’t matter what you come across - you have the tools to have the conversation to help your horse overcome nerves. Boogie hadn’t seen these inflatables before, and they were bigger than her, but she was happy to go between them at a pace, stop between them and back between them. She is pretty much like this about most new things she comes across - because she can trust me, and predict what my behavior is going to be - and this makes her feel safe. Don’t get caught up on the ‘thing’ get focussed on the conversation and getting the horses mind, and the rest will fall into place.
21.01.2022 Suppleness and relaxation with vet, Dr Angela McLeod: "The horse must be relaxed or you will make no progress. Without the correct rhythm, you will not achieve ...true suppleness. A lot of horses under a rider will rush and go too fast, because they are tense and find it easier to balance at a faster pace. If a horse is too fresh and not concentrating, there is no use continuing with training until he is relaxed and listening. He must be calm, moving at his slow, natural rhythm and starting to reach his neck forward and down." *Please note the weight bearing inside hind leg, pastern lower than the diagonal pair fore leg. http://www.horsemagazine.com//why-is-an-understanding-of-/ See more
14.01.2022 Young horses take time to develop, physically underdeveloped take time to change, we can aid this change by providing the path of least resistance for the body until strength is built up. Ideally we are looking for the mental connection from brain to muscle which tells the horse HOW to move to carry the rider, then we build strength by reinforcing and encouraging these postures.
05.01.2022 Being flexible in your thinking allows you to change tactics when what you’re doing is no longer working well. Rather than doggedly sticking to a line of though...t or action, you can take a step back and consider for a moment why this is not working the way you would like. Often if you take that moment to reflect, it relieves the pressure of the momentary situation and you have the opportunity (should you decide to take it) to change your thinking to find another way of going about things or perhaps even change what you are working on entirely. If you’re able to tap into your mental flexibility, perhaps you realize your premise is faulty. What you have been doing, and the fact that it is not bearing the results you would have expected, is proof that there is something deeper at play. If you are curious, you might ask yourself WHAT is REALLY going on. And you might discover something more important. Being able to shift tactics, strategies, and direction at a moments notice is a huge advantage in working with your horse. Horses are dynamic, sentient beings. They are not robotic and they most certainly do not always follow the books. To stay in the moment of riding, to be able to fully serve the needs of your horse IN THE MOMENT, it requires you to value the ability to become mentally flexible so that you can cultivate and develop it into your own riding. --------------------- www.artisticdressage.com Subscribe to our email newsletter to get thought-provoking articles about the art of dressage delivered straight to your inbox: https://ritterdressage.activehosted.com/f/47 Find out about our next online courses and books: https://courses.artisticdressage.com/store
