23.01.2022 An innovative partnership between IBM and Federation University Australia has earned the university the 2020 Engagement Australia Award for Excellence in Student Engagement. IBM and Federation University wanted to create a deep and strategic collaboration to create the new generation of IT professionals to maximise educational impact and deliver a guaranteed pipeline of aligned skills. The partnership has resulted in the development of a Technology Park which generates an es...timated $300 million annually, employs more than 2,100 people and hosts 64 businesses. It has also led to the establishment of a Bachelor of IT (Profession Practice) which enables students to spend 1600 hours across their degree in salaried work at IBM embedded in real projects and teams, along with the employment of 300 graduates and alumni at IBM. A great initiative, well done Federation University Australia!

19.01.2022 In 2010 and 2011, Christchurch, New Zealand was devastated by earthquakes that caused 185 deaths, destroyed 80% of the downtown, and left 11,000 homes uninhabitable. Over 10,000 University of Canterbury students immediately responded by clearing debris and distributing water, blankets, and chemical toilets. The university also created a course to help these student volunteers reflect on their services. 14.01.2022 It is supported by evidence that physical inactivity is contributing to the development of chronic diseases and poor mental health. The 10 000 steps project which started out as a collaboration between CQUniversity Australia, The University of Queensland and QUT (Queensland University of Technology) became the first physical activity project to demonstrate the effectiveness of a community-wide approach to promoting physical activity. 13.01.2022 A world-first approach to enhancing teaching and learning for research critical appraisal developed by the The University of Melbourne has been recognised in the 2020 Engagement Australia Awards. CrowdCARE uses crowdsourcing to teach critical appraisal of research evidence, and is building a committed community keen to learn and share knowledge in this space. CrowdCARE was recognised for enhancing the quality of learning and teaching in higher education by members of tertiary education institutions, community and industry partners, earning the 2020 Engagement Australia Award for Industry Engagement.

10.01.2022 The Melbourne Pollen Count is a great example of how university engagement can improve the lives of many. Born out of a partnership between the University of Melbourne, the Victorian Government and the Bureau of Meteorology, this service measures pollen count and provides Victorians regular updates about pollen levels. This service is now helping the many Victorians with asthma and hay fever to better manage their allergies. 08.01.2022 Dr Liz Reimer of Southern Cross University has been extensively involved in the collaboration between ‘It Takes a Town’ and Southern Cross University to build a more cohesive and healthier community. The research is helping a range of agricultural industries right around the world, including for rice growing in east Asia, and cotton farming in Australia.
