07.01.2022 Engineering students Sarah McLennan, James Goode, Jaiden Swanson and Max Brook’s design for an aquaponic gardening system has been recognised in an international competition through the Strascheg Center for Entrepreneurship in Germany. I think we were all very shocked and speechless, Sarah says on the win. It was an incredible honour considering we were up against groups that had been working on their project for many years, whereas we’d only been working on it since March.... To date we have developed two working prototypes. The first unit was designed to test minimal contact. That means no watering, automated light control and fresh produce all within a sleek enclosure. The second unit is currently in use as a research platform to collect data on the impact of light exposure on the plants themselves. https://bendigo-campus.blogs.latrobe.edu.au//students-hom/ #LaTrobeEngineering #LaTrobeUni #Bendigo

Professor Cahill was one of the earliest staff members of the Engineering Department in the early 1970's, providing significant leadership over numerous years as both Head of Department and Head of School. He was a PhD graduate of the Melbourne School of Engineering and worked numerous years at Telstra's Research Labs. The research interests of Profes...sor Cahill were in the area of Optics & Photonics. His particular interests were Semiconductor laser dynamics, high speed circuits for optical sources and receivers. Mid infrared detectors. Photonic switching. Fibre sensors. Computer aided design. Image processing and signal processing. Prof. Cahill will always be remembered for his great advocacy of IEEE within Victoria, being the founding student branch counsellor at La Trobe University. He was always highly admired by his colleagues. During his retirement he spent a few days a week in his office at La Trobe solving mathematical problems. His smile will never be forgotten. 01.01.2022 Industrial Engineering undergraduate student Nathan Grigg is one of just 5 La Trobe University students who have recently been awarded New Colombo Plan Scholarships. These prestigious Federal Government scholarships support Australian undergraduate students to live, work, study and immerse themselves in the Indo-Pacific region. Nathan is heading to Japan! Nathan said he was ecstatic to be taking up his scholarship. I'm very eager to learn more about the contrast between Aus...tralian engineering and Japanese engineering, he said. Being thrown into their culture, communities and study, I hope that I will be able to improve as an engineer and person. The Internet has made connectivity so easy that any aspiring student must be prepared for cross-cultural experiences in the workplace and everyday life. Nathan has already undertaken one life changing international study tour as part of the Global Innovation Program in Bosnia & Herzegovina in 2019. Internationalisation of our student experiences is critical to their career success. Congratulations Nathan! The recipients will undertake their travels when it is safe to do so. #LaTrobeUni #LaTrobeEngineering #NewColomboPlan
