25.01.2022 I remember being a shy teenager and hating it. I could already tell, at the age of 18, that my comfort zone was going to be the thing that held me back, if I decided to live there. So, I took acting classes, bought a one-way ticket to Europe and lived in a country where I couldn’t speak the language. One way or another, I came out of my shell and I got over my shyness. But, shyness is different from introversion, and this quality is not always easy to recognise in others - e...specially, when you add another language to the mix. In France, I often felt like my personality was heavily compromised and after speaking to many professionals who are experiencing the same thing in Australia, I now recognise it as a common symptom of living abroad. Susan Cain’s book Quiet, is great for figuring out where shyness stops and introversion begins - and, most importantly, it celebrates the secret powers of the introverted leader. Our Language of Leaders Book club is reading this book at the moment. Check it out!

10.01.2022 Writing should be similar to speaking. Remember that you are one human being connecting with another human being. Cliche phrases in email writing kill the chance of a connection. I see them written by professionals who speak English as a first, second and sixth language. ... They (or you) might like to write: - ’Trust this email finds you well’, - ’Thanks in advance’ or - 'Should you need further assistance, please don’t hesitate to contact me.’ These tired phrases are really saying, 'I don’t really want to connect with you, but someone once told me that if I write an opening phrase, they’ll be fooled into thinking I do’. Imagine who you are writing to. Imagine sitting in front of them. Imagine what you want to tell them. Human beings want to connect and language has everything to do with how we achieve that.
