23.01.2022 Mid-year break! BUT. . . theres no rest for the . . . . VCE students! We opted to continue Biology tutor sessions through the holidays - the exams are looking scarily close now that weve hit July. Completing text content has been the goal and with Genetics under our belts (with an interesting, albeit sad, look into the forensic DNA identification of the Russian Royal Romanov family) we move from Revolution to Evolution!

18.01.2022 The Meteoric Rise of Mentor Sentences! No more "Here's a sentence with bad writing, grammar, punctuation & spelling - fix it!" Student's minds are like sponges and will soak in those bad examples so I'm flipping that idea and only presenting excellent, wonderful, beautiful sentences instead! Mentor Sentences are taken from student-relevant texts and presented for analysis. Firstly we brainstorm all the components e.g. capitalisation, punctuation, adjectives, transition word...s and phrases, writing territories (persuasive, argumentative, narrative, informational), etc. Like Gollum, we will take time to fawn-over and admire any Writing Treasures we find. Then we mimic those treasures in our own writing. "Crow Country" & "Percy Jackson And The Lightning Thief" are two novels for this semester & I'm going to enjoy finding beautiful Mentor Sentences as non-fiction examples - I know my two crushes, David Attenborough & Brian Cox, won't disappoint! 17.01.2022 In the last few weeks Ive turned the tables on my literacy kids and given them the job of teacher! They sit at the whiteboard and read a story to me then ask me ten questions to make sure Im paying attention. Wow! They really work hard to try to trip me up! Little do they know that their reading & comprehension skills are soaring and they are eagerly re-reading the passage several times to find questions to ask me! I havent heard "Oh no, not reading" once in that whole time :D

17.01.2022 Weve been running with the Its Spring! theme for several weeks now. In our literacy work weve been using Graphic Organiser Charts to produce Perfect Paragraphs while reading all about Deciduous and Evergreen trees, making Fact Sheets from the internet, backing this information up with examples and evidence, then adding extra details and some of our own thoughts. Then we added our Scientific Observations Being a science teacher Im keen to instil knowledge of scientifi...c method any chance I can get!. Weve been taking lots of photos as our local trees develop buds then dramatically burst into blossom and leaf. The kids have been amazed at how easily all these things can come together to form enormous amounts of writing! No more struggling to come up with just one paragraph - some have produced PAGES of writing! Add the photos, sketches and diagrams and they see how easily this can become a project. See more

16.01.2022 Now that schools will be closing, I'm taking bookings for daytime sessions 9am - 5pm. In the last few years my students have been 50/50 'live' and online. I switched all my students to exclusively online sessions one week ago - no problems at all! I'm so glad the experience I've had with online platforms has made the transition so smooth.

15.01.2022 Comprehension fun with two fantastic new books for Primary-aged students - The Day the Crayons Quit (hilarious!) - this leads nicely on to persuasive text analysis and Scaredy Squirrel makes a friend - has led to many discussions about What makes a good friend? and social skills & niceties and also planning, lists and maps!

14.01.2022 *Congratulations to R for gaining her Western Australian Certificate of Education in Human Biology! - I enjoyed our Skype lessons! *Congratulations to F for passing his Australian Defence Force Entry Exam on top of his VCE! *Congratulations to B for completing her 1st year of Human Biosciences at LaTrobe University!

14.01.2022 Maths Times Tables. I just saw your eyes glaze over! lol! How do kids learn the Times Tables these days? Well, from my experience over the last ten or so years - it's not happening much inside classrooms. Kids are supposed to pick up that knowledge along the way, somehow. By osmosis? In my initial Getting-To-Know-You sessions with all my new maths students, I always ask what they would like to be good at. Times Tables is the most frequent answer. Most have already noticed tha...t they are losing valuable time trying to work out these basic number facts inside their everyday maths. By far, the most effective - and boring - way to learn the Times Tables is by good old-fashioned rote learning. But I would need to spend 10-15 minutes every day for a whole year with a student to achieve this. The most effective - and fun - way to improve number facts really fast is with a great UK programme called Hit The Button and it's FREE! I use Hit The Button in tutor sessions as a 5 minute warm-up; I ask students to use Hit The Button for 5 minutes before they begin maths homework at home; I also challenge students to learn one whole Times Table themselves during term breaks. An important feature of this programme or 'game' - as most kids call it - is that each one minute round gives them a score of how many they attempted and how many were correct. The students are continually trying to better their own score. The programme is 'intuitive' in that it recognises two responses - wrong answers and also the time taken to answer. Those 'sticking points' are asked frequently during the next few rounds. Frequency = Learning! http://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

13.01.2022 In Maths weve recently finished our work on BODMAS - practising these sums on the whiteboard was a great hit. I actually had several students enthusiastically yelling " make them harder!" lol! Were now acquainting ourselves with X&Y Axes, Plot Points & Coordinates as we make our way across the Great Cartesian Plane!! Here is a link to a cool little game for introducing these concepts: https://www.mathsisfun.com//cartesian-coordinates-interact

06.01.2022 All done for the year! My students deserve a big pat on the back for the amazing work they have done this year! During the last week we had some special help from our resident Smart Bunny ~ Ellie

05.01.2022 We read a story about the ancient Greek myth 'Pandora's Box' as a comprehension activity this week. During break time, J decided to make a Pandora's Box with kinetic sand. I love it when our sessions inspire such creativity!

05.01.2022 Back in April this year I began an Intensive Phonological Awareness Program with several of my youngest literacy students who were struggling in this area. The results in those four months have been quite amazing! Sometimes you have to go back to the absolute basics to find and fix essential skills and concepts that kids didn't grasp at school in previous years.

01.01.2022 Punctuation is a priority this term because "I like cooking my family and my pets" is probably not what you meant to say :D
