25.01.2022 Hi Dural Friends. I have one Saturday afternoon timeslot available for student or adult 0English support. P.M me now! V.Hi Dural Friends. I have one Saturday afternoon timeslot available for student or adult 0English support. P.M me now! V.

25.01.2022 Welcome to Term 2 holidays! Give your kids a competitive edge by getting them to read. Even 15 mins a day helps build imagination and comprehension. Get them to explain back to you what they have read, (even if you are cooking!) When your child can express themselves they grow in skill and success.

25.01.2022 If you ladies would like to share some simply gorgeous stories with your children at this time, I would encourage you to check this out. Beautiful pictures too. Hope you are all coping o.k. I am available by Zoom if you or your children need any English support at this time. P.M. me. Virginia.

23.01.2022 Thankyou to all those who have enquired about writing sessions for their secondary children. I am currently on leave till the end of the week but upon return will be searching for a suitable, quiet location. Remember that Readers are Leaders. If you can encourage your child to open a book, a special interest magazine or a news article, encourage them to read it aloud. It cements learning, confidence and comprehension.

23.01.2022 I will be offering a writing course in the next few weeks to current secondary students. This course is professional, personal and productive. Conducted in pairs (or occasionally 3s) with a student of similar abilities, your child will examine the three main types of writing and how they interact with the real world. This workshop tutorial encourages interaction, discussion and reflection. A visual workbook provides a reference for your child to use beyond the tutorial. Recognizing and mastering the basic writing texts is not only cross-curricula, but continues to be skills for life! If anyone would like to register interest, please p.m. me. In the mean-time pull out those beenies, knitting needles and extra socks! Winter is nigh! Cheers, Virginia.

23.01.2022 Proves what we are ALL capable of.

22.01.2022 If your child needs Naplan support I have two timeslots left this term, Saturdays and Wednesday afternoons. I teach private English in Dural. P.M. me on F.B. Cheers Virginia.

19.01.2022 Hey Mummas and Pappas! With Naplan hanging over our kids heads this week, lets keep perspective. Ive told my kids, "Do your best and let it go..." Its just a snapshot of a day, NOT a career maker or breaker!

19.01.2022 A useful, local outing for the school holidays! This shop sells a wide range of cheap books for kids, young and young at heart.

19.01.2022 I have had a number of discussions with stressed out parents this last week regards what should be completed or not, with the current on-line teaching arrangements. Every childs family situation is different, but what is common is the stress all parents are experiencing to some degree. As an experienced teacher my advice is this: Aim to finish Literacy, Maths and reading for Primary, then, if time permits, other subjects. Use on-line learning programs for down time. An ex...ample of this would be Reading Eggs, which will read TO your child if you cant, and Maths On Line with tutorials. For highschoolers I strongly recommended DAILY outdoor exercise before study, otherwise a good indoor workout with windows open! It is also a MUST to keep a sense of social connection at this time. Parents, send invites to the parents of your childrens friends and set up a Zoom or Skype meeting. This helps you control who they are chatting to. Highschoolers who need academic support try the Eddie Woo channel for Maths, and for literacy try Sparknotes. Be reminded this is a time to plug in to each other and reconnect with your most precious assets, your children. Keep safe and work together. You can always p.m. me if your child needs further academic support. Kind regards and Happy Easter, Virginia. See more

18.01.2022 Hi Everyone. Thought you might like to follow this up, from a local mum and teen psych about communication with our kids. I always suggest the Wh Questions in literacy, now they also cool for parenting! https://www.facebook.com/100005168058259/posts/1290381161144140/

17.01.2022 OOOH...I just love this (rather large) website! Give it a go... I think you might love it too!

17.01.2022 When I asked a student this week how he felt our sessions were going, he replied, "Yeh, good." (Teen boys are always short on words.) Then, after thinking, he volunteered, "Actually really good. Im learning a lot!"

16.01.2022 No.1: Get them describing and detailing! Think detail: Smells, looks, sounds, sights. Get your child or children, to think of their favourite person. Now put the timer on. In 1 minute they have to list as many descriptive words about them as possible. (Keep it kind!) The winner picks a special morning tea. *Does Granpa click his teeth?... *Does Nanna wear mauve? *Does Dad drive an old Ute? Now get them to place that person in a short, imaginative story. Good luck! See more

14.01.2022 A teacher should not merely present content but instill confidence; so that maybe i could becomes Yes, I Can. Having worked with over 50 students in the last 7 years I have come to know that it is not simply the content I teach my students, but the realisation that they can do it themselves. I tell parents I will not do the work for your child, but I will show them how. The how and the practice of the skill has the power to change a childs outlook on life AND a childs prospects FOR life.

14.01.2022 Hi Everyone, Now that school is returning, this Essay writing video may be of some help. If you have any struggles getting your child writing as they return (somewhat gradually) to school in the coming days/weeks this may ease things, especially if you feel they have fallen behind with homeschooling/ holidays!

08.01.2022 Is one-on-one tutoring right for your child? I will present the pros and cons of this decision as it is one that could be life-changing for your child. There are a number of pros when it comes to the issue of getting one on one support for your child. Firstly, parents are very busy with long work days and family commitments, finding it extremely hard to spend one-on-one time supporting their child at the end of the day doing homework, assignments and reading. Some paren...ts I know spend Sundays bulk cooking to be available for their children after 3 pm. Both children and parents are overwhelmed with full schedules and lack of time. One on one time gives your child an opportunity not just to develop sound academic skills but build confidence to carry them through life. If a child can write, read and express themselves with a confidence that becomes part of their character then they can grow into a leader. Changing I have no idea to Yes, I know what is being asked of me, is a major leap that changes the direction of a life. A good tutor will target specific areas of concern for the child to ensure they catch up. I diagnose before I teach, assessing reading, writing, comprehension and spelling. This also helps me get to know the person and how to help. A child needs to relate and understand what they are being asked to do, both at school and in real life. A classroom is a busy place off noise, dominant personalities and teachers who are trying their hardest to delivering certain content in a limited time. Schools that allow students to use phones (and sometimes laptops) during class do their students a dis-service. Kids are visual these days, but the temptation for browsing social media or gaming is very real. Some children simply need less distraction to focus, grow and learn. Negatives include the cost for individualized lessons and the fact that 1 hour can seem a long session. I mix it up, changing the content every 15 minutes. This locks the children on. I give them timed activities, imaginative exercises and games. Learning should feel like thirty minutes when fun is the aim! Hope this helps when making the decision to get one on one time for your childs academic success. Remember: the days are long, but the years are short. Trust your parenting gut when your child struggles and remember: The lessons learned from a good tutor endure for life. See more

02.01.2022 When your child can smile, shake hands and articulate themselves to a future employer, when your child can sell themselves in a letter of application, when your child can share, read and critically think about the world, that is when you know you have done your job as an educator. Parents, you are the foremost educators of your children. Over the next week I will post more thoughts on the important role we play as parent educators.

01.01.2022 Pull out your classics. Get the children loving the too!
