Winner of the 1500m Classic (state level event), with a PB and just .29 seconds off the record, Ruby has clocked herself a National qualifying time. ..... .. Ruby and I have been working together to reduce persisting hamstring pain that was impacting her running. To date, we have achieved this by improving her pelvic alignment, and her capacity to access a strong swing and stance phase of gait. Our goal has been movement efficiency. This young lady has so much internal strength and power to tap into. It’s just a matter of helping her access it with specific exercises. .. .. Running ‘lighter’ and with no pain, it’s safe to say we are on the way to achieving our goals. 21.01.2022 But this is far from the case . Experience has taught me that BIG action steps can become a barrier to exercise adherence and new lifestyle habits. It can be too overwhelming, even for the exercise experienced. .. .. At an appointment, clients may be impressed by a full page exercise program with 15 exercises to repeat every 2 days. They may even appear excited and enthused . But when they leave the clinic- they need to overcome what I call their current lifestyle thresh...old to enable a big change like this to occur. .. So I often ask my clients - how big a change can you deal with? How will this action fit with your current lifestyle/training/routine? Will this likely work for you? .. It seems counter productive but I look for 1% action steps. Experience has shown me that this is where the power is. .. For one person, a 1% action may be adding an additional 30mins of cardio to their week. To another it may be doing 5 min of decompression exercises whilst their dinner is cooking on the stove. For an athlete, it may mean 3 rehab exercises to complete daily. .. Success is the result of accumulative actions over time. .. 1% changes ENABLE clients to subtly shift their lifestyle - improving adherence and allowing clients to experience success. Over time (often a lot less time than they think) they get results. The importance is the accumulation of 1% actions because it changes the trajectory of where they are heading. It has become a more successful approach than the overwhelm of big change, which rarely results in long term adherence. .. 06.01.2022 A little flow sequence at home - designed to improve foot and ankle function. Calf raises and balance boards have their place but they can’t be the whole picture. Ankles need distraction and space for flexion. The midfoot needs to be adaptable.
