22.01.2022 Real extraction talk! 3 extractions of calendula officinalis, all grown in Aus and all ACO (Australian certified organic). We had some fun in our lab and put them to the test through a separate, lab-controlled steam distillation process. Although the difference was visibly subtle between the first two the output was illuminating! - The 1st had been grown on a large scale farm and stored in clear plastic for 6 months before purchase. It produced a yield of 0.01% essential oil.... The aromatics of the hydrosol produced were of poor quality and were composted instead of being used in our skin care. - The second distillation of the higher quality herb which was organically grown by a concious herb farm & stored away from light for only 2 weeks before purchase produced a beautiful essential oil and hydrosol. Not only was the quality better but the amount of volatile constituents was also significantly higher at over 0.2% essential oil yield! - The 3rd (very dark and rich flowers) were artisan grown and very beautiful smelling. They were local and grown by a Calendula expert. We expected the best results from this batch, however, these flowers were not stored well or away from light and in the few short weeks between drying and distilling the volatile essential oils had dissapeares. The hydrosol good but the essential oil yield was under 0.01% This experiment indicates a large problem in the herbal medicine and aromatics industry in Australia. Because most herbs are either imported or purchased at rock bottom price from large scale producers the bio-activity is generally lost or poor before we even get to extraction techniques! Even if they are purchased from fantastic producers if they are stored incorrectly by a wholesaler/middle man all of the value can be lost! - Apart from our attention to detail in extraction and our unique processes we make a difference here in working directly with our network of amazing conscious growers that will support our requirements in getting the best expression of a herb. Whatever your belief is about what's happening, i think this can be seen as an invitation to understand more about the nature of reality. There is a virus. The antidote to fear is knowledge.
