24.01.2022 Don't look too closely, this painting's actually kind of a mess. It was my first time using gouache for anything other than adding a dab of white for highlights on watercolour. I discovered it dries up REALLY quickly. Would be very good for dry-brush effects though, seeing as I was unintentionally getting them half the time anyway.
21.01.2022 I've now learned that this plant is called "Ixora coccinea", also known as jungle geranium or flame of the woods. I've always just thought of it as the plant I used to enjoy plucking the flowers and pulling the middle bit out of the stem tube. I've heard some kids suck the nectar off but I was always scared of being poisoned. Done with Copic Marker Australia markers. Plant in front was the one I drew but the unopened buds in the drawing have since bloomed.
17.01.2022 How did I get champagne business cards on a beer budget? By putting in entirely too much time and effort, of course! I designed the layout and sent it off to Penrith Rubber Stamps, who mailed up (you guessed it) a rubber stamp with all my details precisely carved out with a laser. The cards themselves are the product of various gluing configurations, the best recipe being sandwiching spare mount board between different papers, then using a guillotine to cut to size. The sta...mping process itself was probably the hardest to get rightjust a little bit too much ink or pressure and the tiny numbers and letters in the bottom right got obliterated! I used some metallic ink pads but it was too hard to read on most cards so I decided to go over with something darker. That ended up giving me something even better as my inability to precisely align the stamps gave a nice metallic shadowing effect. The best inks I found for this process was Stazon for the deep black, and Delicata for the metallic. They're both made by Tsukineko, and I know you can at least get the Stazon from Spotlight. But if you've already got ink pads lying around, try those first! Note from experience: drawing and painting inks are not the same thing as stamp inks, they won't work. So there you are! If, for some crazy reason, you want to make a ton of bespoke cards for all the networking events you don't go to, those are the steps.
13.01.2022 Better late than never! The opening might have been last week but the exhibition itself is still on until the 26th. A huge thanks to everyone that made it possible and of course my fellow resident artists. It was a blastI wish we could have just kept going for another three months. I think I'm going to make up for being late by posting more photos than really necessary over the next few days, so Bernie DeFont @julian.j.reisinger Caitlyn Taylor Art AxalahWolf keep an eye out for yourselves
12.01.2022 Handception. For some reason I've got the hands of someone twice my age. Admittedly it looks worse than usual in this picture because of the lighting and strain of keeping it there while I moved my head out of the way of the camera.
