06.01.2022 Sad news tonight on the passing of my old mate Enrique Kauer. Enri was a larger than life character, who never ceased to amaze me with his outlook on life and... of course his ability to consume the most amount of alcohol and still hold an intelligent conversation. Enri, of course, was the founder and original owner of Enris Restaurant, which was a Melbourne Institution for over 30 years. I remember when I was offered the Restaurant, I spoke to him about if it was ok by him if I had a go at it. Always he was supporting, and of course many years later I assisted him a little in setting up his last restaurant Los Andes. He, of course, was famous for introducing Argentine Cuisine to Australia. Enris Restaurant was the first Argentine Restaurant opened in Australia, March 1973, and at the time so I found out, it was also the oldest Argentine Restaurant outside of Buenos Aries, of course, that has since been surpassed by others no doubt! Enris Restaurant was first opened on the hill in Bridge Road, just before Lennox Street, before moving to 344 Bridge Road. He was with the Australia Hotel for a while before retiring and taking time off, and finally, his last Restaurant was in Gertrude Street, I have many stories about him, one jumped out at me as I was writing this. I had a customer demanding to cook his steak just like Enris use to do. It just so happened that Enri was standing out back with me chatting when this demand came in . So I welcomed him to cook the steak to this Apparent regular and great mate of Enris. Well Enri use to cook steaks Blue........ Rare blue....... Medium rare Blue.......Medium Blue, so we sent out the steak and had a great laugh until I was called to see the customer he had a complaint. I went out and in front of his friend proceeded to tell me that Enris would have cooked the steak so much better and that he ordered it well done bla bla bla . I said mmmm ok would you like me to bring out the chef and you can explain it to him. He agreed. So with a smile on my face I went into the kitchen and looked at Enris and said apparently your great friend Paul is out on table 10 complaining that his steak was not cooked properly , would you like to meet your long lost friend ( knowing this guy was full of shit and Enri knew too ) so him and I walked up to the table and I introduced this Paul guy to the chef. He said and I quote " This steak was totally underdone and you have no idea how to cook anything like Enri. My friend Enri would never serve a steak underdone like that. I'm thinking ooooooohhhhhhhh this is gonna be sweet as! Enri then cut him off and said Whooooooo are youuuuuu!!!!!! I dont know youuuuu ! you stupid man!!!!!!!!! I ammmmmm Enriiiiii and I have never seen you in my life. How dare you tell me how to bloody cook!!!! you stupid man!! (Enri had this amazing accent) The whole table just burst into laughter as we did , this dickhead was shown up for what he was. The photo below actually was taken about 30 minutes later and I treasure it as he was one of those rare people who made me laugh and such a nice person. R.I.P. Enrique
