24.01.2022 It's been a while since you last saw Rachel and Yalin together (think back to 2018's THE NORMAN CONQUESTS)! We caught up with the pair during their OUTDATED creative developement session to share a few of their favourte things about Ensemble Theatre

24.01.2022 Rachel Chant, recipient of the Ensemble Theatre Sandra Bates Director's Award, tells us how she fell in love with the theatre... it's all about the people. #loveensemblesydney

24.01.2022 Ever had the fear that something was going to fall down from out of the sky? For two young keraunothnetophobes in James Grahams beautiful comedy A HISTORY OF FALLING THINGS, its a struggle they have to face every day. In their personal worlds, these complex characters must grapple with an intense mix of love, fear, isolation and vulnerability. Dressed in comforting, warm casual wear (with a touch of dazzle and fantasy thrown in here and there) designed by Anna Gardiner, check out how the costumes transformed from page to stage. 24.01.2022 We're thrilled to announce Ursula Yovich as the recipient of the 2021 Ensemble Theatre Sandra Bates Director’s Award. Each year winners are offered a paid position of Assistant Director on two of Ensemble’s main stage productions and assist in the ongoing creative development of new works. The award, now in its sixth year, is kindly supported by Jinnie and Ross Gavin. Ursula previously directed a reading of THE FEVER AND THE FRET at Ensemble and we're delighted to have her ba...ck on board. Prudence Upton

23.01.2022 We're excited to announce a new partnership with childrens education charity The Smith Family offering young people the opportunity to experience the full scope of the dramatic arts. This is the first time Ensemble Theatre has been part of the SmArts program, which connects high school children in years 9 to 11 with art organisations. For budding thespians, there will be an opportunity to perform on-stage after a series of actor-led workshops. For students more interested in... behind-the-scenes, activities will include director at work sessions, a set and costume design forum and play-writing workshops. We are thrilled to partner with The Smith Family through the Ensembles Outreach Education program for 2021. This means many young people, who may not usually have access to see live theatre, will now be able to share in the magic of theatre, whether its attending dedicated education performances or viewing a broadcast show online. - Artistic Director, Mark Kilmurry

23.01.2022 Get ready to celebrate because today marks the first day of Rosh Hashanah, Jewish New Year! To honour this special time, were looking back at BAREFOOT IN THE PARK this #flashbackfriday by one of Americas great Jewish playwrights, Neil Simon. Junior lawyer Paul (Jake Speer) and the romantic free-spirit Corie (Mia Lethbridge) have just moved into their new place on the top floor of a brownstone apartment in East Manhattan. Its small and the heating doesnt work, but theyv...e got love to keep them warm. Nothing can spoil their newlywed bliss except maybe for the hole in the roof, the constant parade of eccentric neighbours (Daniel Mitchell and Georgie Parker) and an overworked phone repairman (Jamie Oxenbould). Directed by Mark Kilmurry in 2016, Neil Simons timeless comedy about young love exposed the challenges and sacrifices, big or small, which bubble to the surface after the union of two people. Mark Kilmurrys production is light on its feet, attractively designed and lit and nicely cast with new faces and old hands. 22.01.2022 We're taking it back to 2013 this Flashback Friday with one of the world's favourite gothic stories... FRANKENSTEIN! Adapted for the stage by Nick Dear and directed by Mark Kilmurry, this dark and compelling tale told from the perspective of the creature gave audiences a fresh interpretation of Mary Shelley's well-known story The season was followed by a fourth month tour of Australia! Original music by Elena Kats-Chernin beautifully underscored the story and was played liv...e on stage by Heather Stratfold while an electric soundscape by Daryl Wallis eerily enhanced the gothic atmosphere. This dark, classic tale was told by a powerhouse of a cast including Kate Fitchett, Andrew Henry, Lee Jones, Brian Meegan, Michael Rebetzke, Michael Ross and Olivia Stambouliah. Kilmurry's staging of Frankenstein is magical and moving Frankenstein is a major achievement and a landmark in the Ensemble's history. 20.01.2022 In celebration of NAIDOC week (postponed from July), we're looking back at the beautiful smoking ceremony performed by Uncle Les McLeod and his family to welcome Geoffrey Atherden's BLACK COCKATOO. Directed by Wesley Enoch, this new Australian play was based on the true story of legendary First Nations cricketer Unaarramin, known as Johnny Mullagh, and Australia’s first ever international sporting team. We acknowledge the Cammeraigal people as the customary owners on the land... on which we work and also the Gunditjmara, Jarwadjali and Wotjobaluk people whose ancestors inspired the story of BLACK COCKATOO. We were honoured to have some descendants of the First XI join us for this momentous occasion. Always Was, Always Will Be.

14.01.2022 Today would have marked the opening of A CHRISTMAS CAROL So this Flashback Friday, we’re taking a look at another of theatre legend John Bell’s marvellous creations, 2018’s WWII thriller DIPLOMACY by Cyril Gély! Directed and performed by John Bell with a brilliant cast including John Gaden, Genevieve Lemon, James Lugton and Joseph Raggat, this powerful tale followed the tense negotiations between Swedish diplomat Raoul Nordling and German General Dietrich von Choltitz after... Hitler ordered the destruction of Paris. After a sold out 2018 season, DIPLOMACY returned to Ensemble in 2019 for a special encore season, followed by a tour of NSW and VIC. 07.01.2022 Life follows its own path and doesnt stick to straight formulas (hellooo 2020!) so this Flashback Friday were jumping back to 2014s touching Pulitzer Prize-winning play PROOF by David Auburn. Catherine has inherited her late fathers mathematical genius, but she is crippled by the fear that she may also share his severe mental illness. As she tries to grapple with her situation, she finds her world and mind growing increasingly unstable. Directed by Sandra Bates, Au...burn weaves through his play an intriguing parallel between the requirement for proof in mathematical formulas and the need for trust, validation and certainty in relationships (Sydney Arts Guide). A strong cast including Adriano Cappelletta, Catherine McGraffin, Matilda Ridgway and Michael Ross inhabited these sharply drawn characters with warmth and vulnerability, bringing a beautiful complexity to this poignant tale about mental illness, the nature of genius and love. 02.01.2022 It's #FlashbackFriday and were stepping back to 2014 to take a look at the sold-out season of American playwright Bruce Norris Pulitzer Prize winning drama CLYBOURNE PARK, directed by Tanya Goldberg. This stunning work explores racism and prejudice by looking at the formation of communities. In Act 1, set in 1959 Chicago, a property for sale creates tension in the neighbourhood. In Act 2, some 50 years later, the same house is again at the centre of a racial feud. This powe...rful yet acidly funny production boasted a magnificent cast of seven: Paula Arundell, Thomas Campbell, Briallen Clarke, Nathan Lovejoy, Wendy Strehlow, Richard Sydenham and Cleave Williams. CLYBOURNE PARK is a tremendous play - intricate, beautifully realised; each character interlinked with his and her past and present It's a story that happens in Chicago but is also happening all over Sydney (Stage Noise) Clare Hawley

02.01.2022 If you could rebuild the past and bring back a loved one, would you? Big questions this Flashback Friday as we take a look back to 2018’s MARJORIE PRIME by Jordan Harrison. Directed by Mitchell Butel, this unique and powerful family drama about artificial intelligence raised poignant questions about the impression we leave on others, the details we remember, the stories we re-craft and the love we’re lucky to experience. "A neatly structured and deeply human story about... love, loss, memory and what we leave behind... constantly intriguing" Time Out Sydney Cast: Lucy Bell, Maggie Dence, Jake Speer & Richard Sydenham Design: Simon Greer Lighting: Alexander Berlage Lisa Tomasetti

01.01.2022 Good friends are there for you through thick and thin, but what happens when the friendships that once kept you afloat all those years ago have since sprung a leak? This #flashbackfriday were looking back at 2014s witty and thought-provoking ABSENT FRIENDS from master of comedy Alan Ayckbourn. Directed by Mark Kilmurry, this stinging social commentary explored our inability to accept death and the ultimate end of relationships where love, hope, empathy and fulfillment hav...e dissipated over the years. In true Ayckbourn style where every line is loaded with metaphor and tension bubbling just beneath the surface, ABSENT FRIENDS gave us a very funny but bleak study of stale friendship and dead marriage (SMH). Brilliantly encapsulating their sharply drawn characters, this smart comedy boasted a cast of Michelle Doake, Darren Gilshenan, Brian Meegan, Jessica Sullivan, Richard Sydenham and Queenie van de Zandt. Set and costume design: Anna Gardiner Lighting design: Peter Neufeld Katy Green Loughrey
