25.01.2022 Ever wondered where all the cruise ships go to hunker down during an industry shutdown and the cost?. Well here is the answer and you can draw your own conclusions as to how this segment of the industry will rebound. Can you see an Australasian market developing....NZ and selected Pacific Islands perhaps provided there are strict enforceable international protocols in place to avoid a repeat of the last fiasco:

23.01.2022 You will recall in Queensland at the outset of our response to the Covid pandemic some 5 months ago, we were warned of the severity of this health threat and we could be facing a national death toll of 155K and a Queesland toll of 33/35K. The warnings were grim so we all knuckled down and did our bit. Nothing remotely close materialised nor was it ever likely to as we now know. In the past long weeks the media (chiefly the ABC) have been fixated on the USA. There is not an ho...ur that goes by without reference to the USA and how badly they are doing. It is almost as if we are willing on to our Mates in the States to fail. Today they passed 3 million cases representing .94% of their population of 328M folks. With 133K deaths and rising and similar issues with different sate jurisdictions, there is lots ahead in this story as we all go about repairing much of the world wide community destruction caused by much ill considered reaction and appalling crisis management. The virus will not be eliminated any time soon but can be contained which should be the response. Here is an interesting commentary: https://www.theaustralian.com.au//a350080b2a5acd14cc6862d7 See more

23.01.2022 At Enterprise North we are about advocating for policies and infrastructure that supports population growth. Without this regions languish and it becomes well nigh impossible to make any traction. This is a great article in the Courier Mail that sums up our current predicament : #regions #growth. https://www.couriermail.com.au//58101370f7a0c5d5418fd327e6

22.01.2022 Yesterday I wrote about the squandered opportunity of Monday's media circus in Cairns where the Premier failed to reassure the tourism industry in North Queensl...and that they indeed had a plan to exit the health lock down, that they understood the region's needs of some certainty in planning the exit. I know there is deep frustration experienced by everybody trying to plan their exit. Well today it gets worse, confirming that the State Government has abandoned Cairns and North Queensland to our own devices with the State Tourism Minister and the Premier exhorting people to visit the Whitsundays which is the "jewel in the crown of Queensland tourism" and to assist the cause the State Government will give them a leg up to do just that. Remember the Government is now picking winners with the taxpayers money now. Remember two days ago the Premier embarrassingly suggesting everyone to get in a car and go visit Queensland. All we have ever wanted is the borders opened at the first opportunity and some certainty and consistency around the rules so that operators can plan. No handouts but a little hand up. Now about the "jewel". A bit of regional parochialism is accepted between regions but in these times it is insulting for the Tourism Minister to be indulging in this behavior. How this claim stacks against a destination called Cairns with 3 new hotels added in the past two years, a casino, an international airport, world class resorts, an international dining scene and the Great Barrier Reef on our doorstep beggars belief. Yesterday I mentioned we are being conned by experts. I repeat the claim again and today's media circus at Airlie Beach highlighted how little they know about our reliance on aviation. This is our lifeblood. Have a read of this article below as it says a lot about the economic credentials of our State Government: https://www.theaustralian.com.au//ecea9ac403ef77d4b2a78d50 See more

21.01.2022 Many of you would be aware of my skepticism of much of what we have been told of COVID 19, the overcautious positions taken by many and my fear that some would weaponise the health issues to drive fear for base political purposes to be seen to be "in control" of the situation. The net result of all of this will be shattered lives and dreams for many and economies in our regions rebuilding from scratch. Naysayers have been banished it seems. This piece of journalistic excellen...ce today is well worth a read. Before you do here is a bit of who he is:Adam Creighton is an award-winning journalist with a special interest in tax and financial policy. He was a Journalist in Residence at the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business in 2019. He’s written for The Economist and The Wall Street Journal from London and Washington DC, and authored book chapters on superannuation for Oxford University Press. 19.01.2022 Since the onset of this COVID pandemic I have consistently pushed back against the excessive health management emphasis under an elimination strategy rather than a planned response incorporating views of other sectors and arriving at a sensible suppression strategy. The stop/start nature of the management here in Queensland is destroying businesses, upending communities, destroying confidence and destroying dreams. One size does not fit all here. The regions are paying too high a price. Share if you agree:

19.01.2022 It's the Federation stupid!. From the outset the "were all in this together" songline was flawed. Nice idea but alas did not stand a chance. Read on if you are still interested in following this narrative: https://www.theaustralian.com.au//b54300684ad96e739fbe0f87

19.01.2022 Australia is now at the tipping point. Consensus at the National Cabinet Table is flimsy and the need for an exit plan is growing apparent each and every day. Decisive action backed by a National Recovery Plan is required immediately. Here are some well considered reasons: https://www.theaustralian.com.au//61184b5377a4638fbd70b9ef

18.01.2022 Time’s up folks! Am off to bed terrified. Just watching the collaboration between ABC and the WWF telling us all the GBR is on the brink and climate change is a...bout to wreak havoc and that the GBR is the canary in the coal mine. It coincides with the ABC doing a number on the GBR and elsewhere via a rerun of Attenborough claiming doom and gloom again. Make no mistake these programs, so full of hysteria and incompetent commentary do great damage to us all when presented in this fashion. Much of it is such claptrap and it’s like watching a B Grade cowboy movie with amateur actors tripping over themselves. GRMPA, AIMS, universities, Fed Govt, State Govt, TA, TEQ, TTNQ, Coastal Queensland Mayors all complicit in this massive misrepresentation of the true state of the reef when they refuse to correct the record and call some of this out. Thank God there is some brilliant camera work and the spawning is happening notwithstanding the rank stupidity of the ABC commentary team. We are very proud of the GBR, it is in great shape and we have great marine operators and everyone should get out there to see what frauds many of these commentators are. The finale is Sunday night. Hopefully a wonderful spawning and ongoing regeneration! Go the reef See more

18.01.2022 This issue raised by our nation's Chief Scientist last week went largely unreported but has enormous implications for our future development and growth. We need an educated society and our future generations need reliable and trusted guidance for the best of the best to succeed: https://www.theaustralian.com.au//05767783693916c2ae614b63

16.01.2022 Henry Ergas spells it out here. It has been quite a struggle to get some balance into the discussion on how the management of the COVID response has pretty well laid the foundation for decimated economies in our Queensland remote communities reliant on domestic and international engagement: https://www.theaustralian.com.au//5d2f3e4bffbd890c17d72a2f

16.01.2022 It is D day on Tuesday. Our borders should have opened weeks ago with an announcement made some 4 weeks ago. There was and remains today no exit plan for Queensland from the border lock down. This madness has, and continues to have a devastating toll on the economies across the north: https://www.couriermail.com.au//0b5492b010931ddcc2e420dbad

16.01.2022 Thought I should share this story that arrived in my inbox yesterday. Bob is normally on the mark https://www.theaustralian.com.au//81003c2a71a27582c7d1c9af

13.01.2022 News Flash from Kevin Byrne at Enterprise North Inc. - https://mailchi.mp//northern-news-from-kevin-byrne-at-ente

13.01.2022 Well today for the second time in a week the State Government turned the screws on us again. We are now effectively shut down from the rest of the eastern seaboard of Australia as the Premier and the CMO pursue their ELIMINATION STRATEGY of the virus rather than a SUPPRESSION strategy. Make no mistake they have no plan and are now spooked. The result will be a shattered economy and shattered livelihoods and communities. We cannot shut down and open up on whim. Where are the voices here:https://www.theaustralian.com.au//0dd4f1b0fbd5b1fcb9e969f5

11.01.2022 Nothing more to say really. Local media and tourism talking everything up and the State pollies putting the fear of God into everyone with threats of another lockdown. The hand brakes should have been released weeks ago: https://www.abc.net.au//coronavirus-why-is-queen/12391528

10.01.2022 Now the hard work starts. After the appalling handling of COVID issue with the implementation of an eradication policy to include excessive lock downs and lockouts across regional areas as well as a punishing regime of border closures we need to rebuild. We are up to the challenge but need the Government to step up and do the same. Our State economy was well on the downward slide some 24 months ago. Please have a read of this take. There is nowhere to hide and certainly no time for excuses. Here is our State member after being sworn in as Assistant Minister for Tourism: https://www.couriermail.com.au//4e0b88eab2f956fc27e696346f

09.01.2022 Now many will recall some 2 years ago that the State Government committed $10M to an international freight hub at Wellcamp outside of Toowoomba. After some serious pressure from ourselves and others the same offer was then made to Cairns. We are of course 2 hours closer to Asian markets so it makes sense. People were falling over themselves to get in on the announcement. Each project came with an independent government funded business case costing $600K each I am advised. Th...e model relied on a private sector proponent to drive each project and partner with additional funding. The obvious proponent here you would think might be the Cairns Airport. But no, they exhibited no interest and have stayed on the sidelines thus far. Despite the business case being completed long ago, there has been no movement here. This at a time when we need to get cracking to rebuild and diversify our shattered economy. This is yet another example of failing State Government processes to drive the diversification of our economy and further evidence of the miserable performance of our airport. This project has been stalled for far too long and obviously going nowhere. In the meantime here is what our competitors are up to down at Wellcamp. Yet further evidence of a failed aviation and export strategy for TNQ : https://www.theaustralian.com.au//d8384df09cd465aad8d75c66 See more

07.01.2022 A friend of mine has not long come out of hospital after recovering from Covid 19, I’m sure he won’t mind me sharing this with you all as it brings home how the... current situation affects people thank you stay safe. X To my lovely Facebook who don't understand what it means to be on a ventilator but want to take the chance of breaking the Covid lockdown rules for ANY reason...... For starters, it's NOT an oxygen mask put over the mouth while the patient is comfortably lying down and reading magazines or listening to music... Ventilation for Covid-19 is a painful intubation that goes down your throat and stays there until you recover....or until you die. This intubation is done under general anaesthetic usually for at least 2 to 3 weeks without moving with a tube inserted from the mouth up to the trachea which allows you to breathe to the rhythm of the lung machine. The patient can't talk or eat, or do anything naturally. The machine keeps you alive whilst your body (hopefully) fights the pneumonia in your lungs.... The discomfort and pain you feel from this means medical experts have to administer sedatives and painkillers to ensure tube tolerance for as long as the machine is needed whilst the patient is in this induced coma. After 20 days from this treatment a patient loses 40% muscle mass and gets mouth or vocal cords trauma as well as possible pulmonary or heart complications. Some patients suffer from blood clots that can lead to strokes and/or organ failure....sometimes multiple organ failure. Add a tube into your stomach through your nose for liquid food - a catheter to collect urine - an IV for fluids and medication - an A-line to monitor your blood pressure - teams of nurses and physios to reposition your limbs etc.... etc..... It is for this reason that old or already weak people can't withstand the treatment and are sadly not able to survive it.... When the ventilator is removed and they do eventually start to wake you up from the coma you will spend at least a week not knowing what is real and what isn't. You won't know who you are or where you are. You will be hallucinating. You will be convinced that all the terrifying dreams you have had were real. Some patients will therefore suffer from serious ongoing mental health issues. And the worst part is you will have to go through all of this ALONE as the hospitals do not allow you to have ANY visitors..... Anyone want to try all that out? No ? Well then do yourselves a favour......follow the lockdown rules......and stay safe and well!.... Lots of love x

07.01.2022 A six pack side by side on the corner of Shields and Abbott Sts in central Cairns CBD today. The slide is on so Queensland Govt needs to stop shutting down parts of our economy and keep our borders open.

06.01.2022 The haste at which Queensland banned travel to/from SA was disgraceful. No positive cases is the past two days...and now this. The management of this is abysmal and embarrasing. Have a read of this...go figure:https://apple.news/AiLsm9DZ9TISy5b75D8wjuQ

05.01.2022 Some very very happy southern guests spending a day with with one of our members on the GBR. We are very proud of the sate of the GBR and will continue to defend it's reputation as the best managed and most vibrant reef ecosystem in the world: https://youtu.be/EiYFyMHM3Ho

05.01.2022 We have been consistent all along about the devastating economic cost of these prolonged lock downs in our regions. Have a look here to understand the figures. Shocking:https://www.theaustralian.com.au//f70defd04f9b6d98ddb48326

04.01.2022 The Premier’s hastily arranged visit to Cairns on Monday spoke volumes about how hopelessly inept the State Government’s handling of the exit phase of the health lock down of this State is. She travelled all the way here (which incidentally is further for her than going to Melbourne) to meet with a selected few of the usual suspects, and apart from some back slapping and self congratulatory messaging, this was an opportunity lost as the Premier spoke to the State and not to ...North Queenslanders. She was exhorting everyone in the state to get in their cars and go visit the great state of Queensland. Really as if that will change the dial for us. Sadly the media conference was embarrassing for our Premier and the entourage accompanying her as it made a mockery of our circumstances here and that is we need our borders open. Knowing full well that our fortunes are linked to air travel from the southern States (and internationally) there was no mention at all of any of this or the international nature of Cairns. I cannot fathom how we are expected to have confidence in the leadership of our State when they have no idea of what drives the economy of this region and many others across the north. With the exception of Victoria, our social restrictions remain the most punitive of all, and despite the clear evidence to the contrary, they continue to misrepresent the health threat. Witness the haste to call out the COVID case false alarm in Emerald. There was no mention of the spiralling unemployment figures and the need to get people flying into Cairns as well as the need to generally unlock the North. No just more of the same lecturing of washing your hands, social distancing and what a great job we have done and look out for the second wave. We have had one hospitalisation for 3 days up here, a couple of false alarms and no evidence of community transmission but spooked a State and shut it down indefinitely. This is shameful stuff as we are being conned by experts and are being very poorly served by those who are entrusted by us to do far, far better than what is being dished up at present. See more

04.01.2022 Regional economies are being destroyed in front of our eyes. This is a complete failure now of public policy which is failing the national interest: https://www.theaustralian.com.au//99e1c78213df82313a150185

02.01.2022 We are about economic growth and opportunity for our regions. We also opposed the extensive lockdowns with no evidence of community transmission. Sadly our regions have been neglected for too long and there has been promises and spin for sure but little substance.Regional needs are recognised in this editorial:https://www.couriermail.com.au//e5f114368ec33ac7e4ab158147. #regions#economies#infrastructure
