16.01.2022 10 years ago today, the tsunami from the 2011 Great East Japan earthquake (or Tohoku or Tohoku-oki, after the region where it struck) ripped this building from ...its foundation, floated it around a bit, and left it lying on its side. The peak tsunami runup reached just a few feet below the level of the vantage point in the third photo, which is around 100 feet above the valley floor. The awesome destructive power of these natural events is one of many reasons why it is important to study them and understand and assess the risks associated with them, and then act societally to minimize the future losses.

For example in Namibia, initial estimates suggested communal wildlife conservancies could lose US$10 million in direct tourism revenues. This threatened funding for 700 game guards and 300 conservancy management employees."
