25.01.2022 Tasmanians Keep your eyes peeled for humpbacks trailing buoys and ropes on the East Coast- last seen near Freycinet on Tuesday afternoon, heading south. If you spot whales in the area, call the Marine Conservation Team on 0427 942 537. Worryingly, the last sighting was approx 40km away from the controversial Okehampton Bay salmon farming lease, which whale experts have flagged as an entanglement risk to whales. Please share to people who live nearby - many eyes on the water might help avert a death.

20.01.2022 Salmon giant Tassal has been caught trapping, sedating and starving seals, leading to a criminal investigation into animal creulty. Locals are also reporting an increase in dead seals washing up around feelot salmon sites, with wounds matching those inflicted by bean bag bullets.

17.01.2022 Sedating and starving seals; dead seals washed up next to Tassal's floating feedlots with wounds to the eye and back - big salmon is removing by force the protected marine life in the way of big profit and Government has dropped criminal investigations and changed laws to let it happen. If you haven't signed our petition to clean up this industry, take a second at https://www.salmon.org.au.#tassal #salmon

17.01.2022 This video lets you compare what the seafloor used to look like, to what it looks like next to Tassal's feedlot salmon - kelp choking in slimey algae. Leading scientist Christine Coughanowr explains - Nutrients discharged into sheltered waters are often taken up by macroalgae, as well as by epiphytes (small clinging plants) that grow on seaweeds and on seagrasses. If this algae becomes too prolific, it can smother and shade out other plant life, and when it dies off, this decomposing vegetation can sink to the bottom and draw down oxygen levels leading to the death of crayfish, abalone and other bottom-dwelling organism." Thanks to the Killora Community Association for sharing this footage.

12.01.2022 We've received eyewitness reports of two more dead seals washed up around salmon farms with suspicious injuries in the last week. IF YOU FIND A DEAD SEAL and you are in Tasmania, call DPIPWE on 0427 942 537 to report and demand an autopsy. Take photographs of the animal, including close ups of any injuries. Please send us the photos in fb messenger with location, time of sighting and any relevant details. Please share widely; it's important that this evidence is collated by an independent group to hold industry and government accountable.

10.01.2022 "He's buggered....." :-( In case you missed yesterday's media coverage exposing the criminal investigation of #Tassal for animal creutly, have a read - the text of the article is in comments. Sharing this post is caring for tortured, protected seals. And please, if you haven't already signed the petition to stop this, visit www.salmon.org.au.

10.01.2022 This is the picture of the fire Huon aquaculture has shared which led to the escape of 52000 introduced species. We're relieved to hear no staff were hurt. But it is irresponsible of the company to suggest this won't hurt the environment and focus on the boon for anglers. All international literature agrees big escapes alter ecosystems. One IMAS study found 15 per cent of escaped salmon lived off wild fish - that's 7800 from just this escape. While thousands of animals will die slowly of starvation. Regarding biosecurity; when is Huon Aquaculture going to disclose whether these fish were being treated for disease?

07.01.2022 We're all hearing rumours about Tassal's plans to expand their feedlot salmon operations further up Tasmania's east coast. The company deny it. But given they have been caught-out lying about their east coast expansion plans in the past, do you have much faith in their assurances?

06.01.2022 This video footage speaks volumes. In areas that are safe from feedlot salmon we have thriving marine landscapes. In areas around pens, we have death zones.

06.01.2022 Damning confirmation from insiders that the Tasmanian salmon industry is completely under regulated. 'The two experts who quit the panel charged with deliberating over the Tasmanian salmon industry's expansion have given scathing assessments of the aquaculture development approvals process, telling a parliamentary inquiry the body is not independent and has no legal option other than to ultimately green light new fish-farming developments.'

05.01.2022 New evidence has emerged that Tassal were under investigation for animal cruelty - penning, sedating and starving protected seals for up to 21 days. The investigation was dropped at exactly the same time the Tasmanian Government granted Tassal a permit to continue the illegal activity. Demand real regulation for the cowboy salmon industry here : https://www.salmon.org.au

05.01.2022 "As the spreading cancer of a degrading environment eats away at our future, all we get from authorities is self-serving industry spin, and I find that very disturbing." The Tasmanian Government is ignoring expert advice, as big salmon's floating feedlots destroy Tasmania's marine values.

03.01.2022 More business owners raise their fears that the Tasmanian Government is running a 'behind closed doors' review of their 'no grow' zones for feedlot salmon. Jason Whitehead says he only bought property on the back of the promise Tassal would go no further up Tassie's precious east coast.

02.01.2022 Good to see The Guardian running serious comments on the environmental impacts of Huon's mass feedlot salmon escape, instead of just reproducing company PR. Huon has yet to confirm whether any of these escaped salmon were being treated for disease. If you're in Tassie and do catch a few, message us a photo of their stomach contents - so we can see what they're eating.
