23.01.2022 Wow! Queensland's single biggest energy user is planning to go 100% renewable by 2040, and will reach 80% by 2030. Big refineries and steelworks across the country are running the race to zero emissions energy, and with the contracts to supply energy to Victoria's aluminium smelter soon to expire, a new plan to repower with clean energy is a must.

23.01.2022 AGL Energy should not be allowed to build a dirty fossil fuel project in beautiful Westernport Bay 2 months of expert testimony & community submissions have revealed a total lack of social license & the potential for huge environmental impacts! Save Westernport No AGL gas Victorian National Parks Association Environmental Justice Australia

23.01.2022 Share if you want answers Environment Protection Authority Victoria's review of the operating licences for coal power stations stalled when they started ‘negotiating’ with the power station owners The review has now dragged on for 3 YEARS & our FoI request has been met with excuses and delay. We think Victorians deserve to know how much influence giant energy corporations are having over their own licences to pump out toxic pollution and climate-wrecking greenhouse gase...s. So we lodged a Freedom of Information (FoI) request to see the correspondence between the EPA and the power station owners. That request was lodged in May, over 6 months ago, and the EPA had 30 days to respond. But we've STILL not been provided with anything other than excuses and delays. So what does the EPA have to hide? Have private corporations managed to water down regulations to protect community health? Have they fought to stop limits to greenhouse gas pollution being included? The EPA has said we'll find out what’s in the licences within the next few weeks - but will we ever get the full story on power stations' influence on the EPA? So share this make sure the EPA knows you want answers!

20.01.2022 This conversation guide by Climate for Change is a fantastic resource! climateforchange.org.au/climate_conversation_guide Climate breakdown is a tricky topic that many of us shy away from ... We feel like we don't know enough, or won't say the right things. This guide will help you have better conversations, and all the insights are backed up by the latest insights on Australian attitudes and values! There are also general conversation tips and suggestions of how to respond to common barriers to taking action. Check it out! climateforchange.org.au/climate_conversation_guide

18.01.2022 In the absence of federal leadership, states and territories continue to lead the way on climate action The ACT has unveiled more than $300 million on climate change initiatives, including interest-free loans for household solar panels, fees waived for electric vehicles and funding for the country's newest big battery!

18.01.2022 San Francisco just banned gas in all new buildings. And so should we! Households account for almost 40% of Victoria's gas consumption, so going electric would make a big difference! It also means we could avoid new polluting projects like AGL's proposed gas import terminal in beautiful Westernport Bay.

17.01.2022 Victoria’s grid runs on 50% renewable energy for first time! It's good news, but clean energy is only part of the puzzle Now we need Dan Andrews to announce strong climate targets for 2025 & 2030 that are in line with 1.5c

17.01.2022 A scientific panel has recommended that the Platypuse be listed as vulnerable in Victoria! Not even Australia's most iconic animals are being properly protected from the destruction and degradation of our natural world. We need stronger laws to protect nature, and an independent authority to actually ENFORCE them.

16.01.2022 "I hope you see those big nations who spent a lot of money for weapons or war turn their resources to the preservation of the climate." The Dalai Lama, wise as ever.

15.01.2022 Looking to get outside and explore some new places? This is a great list Let us know in the comments if you have other suggestions

13.01.2022 Responsible leadership! So great to see New Zealand's government will declare a #ClimateEmergency, pledging 'immediate action'

13.01.2022 Our community has had an incredible impact this year despite immense challenges, and none of it is possible without you! So here's a special thank you message with our highlights from 2020 Have a wonderful break, and let's keep up the momentum in 2021

10.01.2022 The cheapest energy is the energy you don't use. That's why we're calling for a big focus on energy efficiency in this year's #VICbudget. It saves households money, creates good jobs across the state and cuts pollution fast.

10.01.2022 They can't even identify what they are killing! This cruel 'sport' should be banned in Victoria, just like it is in New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia.

10.01.2022 It's #NAIDOC2020, a time to acknowledge and celebrate the First Nations people who have occupied and cared for this continent over 65,000 years. This incredible poster features an Indigenous person inside the shape of Australia, showing that this country always was and always will be Aboriginal land. (The 2020 National NAIDOC Poster, Shape of Land, was designed by Tyrown Waigana, a Noongar and Saibai Islander man.)

09.01.2022 It’s the most flood-prone land in Australia. But new research shows private property is blocking natural floods from reaching the wetlands that need them. The result is only 2 PERCENT of Murray-Darling Basin wetlands get watered each year. Some ecosystems, like black box eucalyptus forests, almost never get watered. The solution is straight forward government needs to work with private landholders to let the water flow through their properties. States have had years and $1 billion to fix this problem. Time to hurry up and get it done.

08.01.2022 We've all learnt a lot this year, and the way the community came together to support the most vulnerable in the face of COVID-19 gives us hope. Let's take these lessons with us into 2021, and let's keep working to build a just and sustainable future Credit Eco with Em

08.01.2022 The alpine ash forests of Victoria and NSW are struggling to recover after the extreme 2019-20 bushfires ... And as climate damage causes more frequent fires, scientists have found the trees being burnt are too young to produce seeds! There has been a huge effort to collect seeds to help these forests regenerate. But governments need to provide greater protection for native forests AND we need to increase the ambition and urgency of climate action.

08.01.2022 WIN! In April we wrote this opinion piece about how Victoria's economic recovery should also solve the climate crisis... and it looks like nearly everything will be included in the State Budget today: Massive investment in energy efficiency upgrades, solar panels and switching homes from old gas heaters to efficient electrical alternatives Modernising our ageing energy grid with investment in batteries and new transmission lines to support the transition to wind and solar... Funding for bushfire recovery and planting millions of trees Focus on public transport not roads The Budget won't be perfect, but we hope it shows Victoria's economic recovery will be powered by climate solutions and restoring nature.

08.01.2022 Powerful words from coal miner Grant Howard: I’m a coal miner. I know there’s no such thing as clean coal The writing is on the wall. A transition is clearly happening. Coal miners should not be left out of this shift. Whether it's in the Hunter or the Latrobe Valley, nobody benefits from politicians who bury their head in the sand and refuse to plan for the transition from coal.

08.01.2022 Pacific leaders condemn Australia's 'weak' climate target in open letter to Scott Morrison ... Not only is it a weak target, but we're barely on track to meet it because there's no real Federal policy and states are doing all the work.

07.01.2022 Researches have discovered the cause of a strange skin lesions affecting the Burrunan dolphin, found only Port Phillip Bay and the Gippsland Lakes ... it is linked to climate breakdown and increasingly extreme storms!

06.01.2022 Anyone planning a holiday to Phillip Island or Westernport Bay to see "chlorinated discharge" or giant gas tanker ships? Didn't think so. AGL's proposed gas terminal could cost the local tourism industry millions $$$.

06.01.2022 Under a new proposal, private network companies would slap additional charges on Aussie households to export their clean energy ... But the big generators of polluting coal and gas wouldn't pay a cent

05.01.2022 #BREAKING Big wins from the Victorian budget, including the creation of six ‘Renewable Energy Zones’ across the state! This $540 million investment will help build a modern energy grid that can incorporate more clean energy and prepare for the closure of old coal-burning power stations. The budget also contains a game-changing $797 million investment in household energy efficiency programs, solar and batteries.... In total, the budget invests a whopping $1.6 billion clean energy. It's the largest investment in clean energy of any state, ever! There is also significant funding to restore landscapes by planting four million trees and to improve river and wetland health. Thanks to everyone who has spoken up and taken action throughout this very difficult time Together we've been calling for sustainable recovery solutions that can create jobs AND a better future. The Andrews government has listened and delivered! Get all the detail on this and other announcements in our media release here >> https://environmentvictoria.org.au/2020//24/state-budget-2/ You can also join us tonight for a special budget webinar with Energy, Environment and Climate Change Minister, Lily D'Ambrosio >> https://environmentvictoria.org.au/budget-breakdown/

03.01.2022 What a week! After Victoria's massive $1.6 billion investment in clean energy, NSW has just passed a plan to become a renewable energy superpower.

03.01.2022 Would this encourage you to ditch the car for your morning commute?

02.01.2022 The Victorian government wants to encourage electric vehicles...but they're going to penalise people for driving them?!

02.01.2022 The latest State of the Climate report from the CSIRO and Bureau of Meteorology again confirms that Australians are experiencing devastating impacts of burning coal, oil & gas. It's outrageous that the Morrison Government has no plan, and continues to help fossil fuel companies make the problem worse. Even as our bushfires get more extreme, winter rainfall declines, rivers dry up, and the oceans rise. The hope in Australia right now lies with the states, and the hundreds of g...rassroots community groups working across the country. Every single state has a zero emissions target for 2050 (although it needs to happen faster) and are already rolling out bold plans for 100% or even 300% clean energy we can do it!

02.01.2022 So little of Melbourne's native grasslands are left. But despite making promises, the Victorian government has failed to protect them. Instead, they continue to be bulldozed for profit These grasslands are home to an incredible diversity of life, including the endangered striped legless lizard, which has a unique 'squeak'. The Victorian government needs to follow through with its promise to establish the Western Grasslands Reserve.

01.01.2022 More sudden failures at Victoria's old coal clunkers over the weekend An electrical fault at the 45 year-old Yallourn, and a boiler leak at Loy Yang means 2 units out of action and needing repairs. These polluting clunkers will be retired sooner than many people realise, and the Andrews government needs to develop a transition plan and support the Latrobe Valley community to embrace new sustainable industries.

01.01.2022 Victoria just gave 2 billion litres of water back to the Gunaikurnai people. This is a hopeful step towards recognising Indigenous people’s deep connection to water, and increases pressure on governments across Australia to take water justice seriously!

01.01.2022 This is a pretty big deal ... Woolworths consumes roughly 1% of Australia’s electricity, and they just pledged to go 100% renewable by 2025

01.01.2022 Our op-ed in The Age today History shows us that coal companies don’t tell the truth about closure dates, and we can't leave this important transition up to private overseas corporations. It requires forward-planning and active involvement from government to support the Latrobe Valley through the difficult but necessary transition.
