21.01.2022 Please get involved by donating and sharing this posthelp us finish off 2020 on a positive note, and be part of bilby-saving history! We have secured acce...ss to a small section of land directly next to our Charleville breeding facility that will allow us to upgrade and expandmeaning we can considerably increase contribution to our bilby breeding program. Be part of the history of saving the original Aussie battler, by donating to our upgrade today: https://bit.ly/32yGLoq What will this upgrade mean for the bilby? It is reasonable to assume that a doubling of the facility size (which is what is planned) would enable us to manage double the number of breeding pairs as we currently have. This breeding facility is so important as it provides the foundations to grow the 60-80 bilbies we estimate are currently roaming freely at Currawinya. The Charleville facility has also been identified as a site that is suitable to maximise the genetic diversity of both captive and wild speciesso the expansion and maintenance of it is crucial to the ongoing genetic diversity required to establish an insurance population of bilbies for the next 100 years. This planned upgrade will provide more capacity for breeding pairs, more creching facilities (where we condition bilbies for release), more equipment to ensure we can continue providing the optimum animal welfare, as well as safe working conditions for our husbandry staff and volunteers. This is a huge step towards our goal of establishing free-living bilbies in protected reserves across Australia, to the point where we have an insurance population of 10,000 bilbies. But we can’t upgrade the facility without your help. We need to raise $101,900 as soon as possible so we can begin work. Be part of bilby-saving history today and please donate what you can: https://bit.ly/32yGLoq

Help build the nation’s archive by putting your region on the map. You can upload photos to https://placesofpride.awm.gov.au... #PlacesofPride #RemembranceDay #LestWeForget #WeRememberThem

12.01.2022 Stunning species

09.01.2022 Say hello to this chunky fluffball! This ridiculously plump Mountain Pygmy-possum weighed in at a whopping 71 grams, which is much heftier than the average 40 g...rams. Mountain Pygmy-possums fatten in autumn to prepare for winter hibernation. Recent monitoring of the population in Mount Kosciuszko National Park has revealed good numbers and healthy possums despite the impact of last year's fires. NPWS and Saving our Species officers will continue to provide supplementary feeding stations to this hibernation season. #NSWParks #SavingourSpecies

09.01.2022 The Djab Wurrung call this ancient tree the Directions Tree, which they believe grew from a seed and the placenta of their ancestor many centuries ago. It is a ...towering yellow-box with a distinctive serpent-like swirl on its trunk These trees have been fiercely guarded by the Djab Wurrung Embassy and hundreds of supporters since mid-2018, with protesters staring down police efforts to carry out eviction orders on many occasions. VicRoads have planned to cut down this and numerous other trees of Aboriginal cultural value to widen a road. Djab Wurrung had applied for protection of the area under the federal Aboriginal heritage act several times. Multi-clan elder Aunty Sandra Onus, who is brought the latest case, said bulldozing trees that her people deemed sacred was akin to Rio Tinto’s destruction of two 46,000-year-old sacred Aboriginal caves in Western Australia. "We’ve shown them a better way to do this and they're not listening to us," Ms Onus said of the government. "They’re being bloody-minded, as far as I’m concerned."
