22.01.2022 It is important that recyclable items are not inside plastic bags when in the yellow-lid bin because they cannot be processed at the NAWMA Material Recovery Facility (MRF) like this. If recyclable items are presented in a plastic bag, the bag and all of its contents will be sent to landfill.

18.01.2022 Recycling your oil - Free Cars, trucks, farm machines and boats all need regular lubricating oil changes. Do you remember to recycle your used oil after an oil change?... Around 500 million litres of lubricating oil is sold in Australia each year. While some engines, such as two-stroke lawn mower engines burn oil completely, others like motor vehicle engines and machinery produce large volumes of used oil that can be reclaimed and reused. Industry and the community generate at least 250 million litres of used oil in Australia each year. Disposing of used oil the wrong way has the potential to pollute land, water and infrastructure, so we need to recover and recycle as much of it as possible. Consider that it takes only one litre of oil to contaminate one million litres of water and a single automotive oil change produces 4 to 5 litres of used oil. Used oil, or 'sump oil' as it is sometimes called, should not be thrown away. Although it gets dirty, used oil can still be cleaned and re-used. In fact, recycled used oil can be used as an industrial burner fuel, hydraulic oil, incorporated into other products or re-refined back into new lubricating oil. Used oil disposed of inappropriately, dumped in landfill or stored on farms and in garages can cause harm to the environment, so it is important that we recycle as much of it as possible. If you only produce a small amount of used oil from vehicles or farm machinery, you can take it for free to the Naracoorte Transfer Station.

11.01.2022 It is difficult to recover small, loose bottle tops from mixed kerbside recycling with sorting technology currently used in Materials Recycling Facilities (MRFs). However, technology is always improving, and we may be able to sort bottle tops more efficiently in the future. Bottle tops and lids must always be removed from any bottle or container you place in your recycling bin. Bottle tops and lids larger than the size of a business card (eg. lids from jam jars) are much easi...er to sort, and can be placed in recycling bins, provided they are separated from the bottle or container. At this time, plastic bottle tops smaller than the size of a business card should not be placed in recycling bins, but steel and aluminium bottle tops can be recycled if you follow the directions below. Bottle tops are too small to get collected in the sorting process, but if placed in a can of the same metal type they will get collected for melting with the appropriate material. To present these bottle tops for recycling you need to: Wash the bottle tops to remove any food residue Place the clean bottle tops inside a can of similar material if a magnet sticks to it, it is steel if not, it is aluminium. Squeeze the can to close it so the bottle tops dont fall out Put the can in the correct recycling bin The steel and aluminium from bottle tops can be turned into street signs, car parts and new bottle tops.
