17.01.2022 Between a rock and a hard place Iain Stych took this photo of a bottle in Moore Park Nature Reserve. At first glimpse this picture just looks like a bit of rubbish in the bush but when you look closer you will notice that there are many broken snail shells surrounding the bottle. This is a sign that a native bird, the Noisy Pitta (Pitta vesicolor - pictured) has been feeding on snails and using the hard surface of the bottle to break open the shells. The bird would usually make use of rocks, stumps or other natural hard surfaces but in the absence of these features the Noisy Pitta has cleverly improvised.

17.01.2022 Our Skilling Queenslanders for Work Townsville team have just completed their first intake of traineeships with great success. The diversity of activities has exceeded all environmental project targets, led by supervisor, Lindsay Whalley-Thompson. Some of the activities undertaken included:... Planting 2500 plants in our three sites over the course of 18 weeks at James Cook University. This is part of the riparian rehabilitation along Goondooloo Creek. The Creek is an important wildlife corridor that gives protection to plants and animals in this significant habitat. Controlling the Chinee apple at the Rock Wheelers Mountain Bike tracks through differing techniques depending on size of weeds. Best industry practice techniques in natural area restoration were employed and applied by the team including cut stump, basal bark and foliar spraying. Working on Magnetic Island as part of Townsville City Council and QPWS’s Weedblitz program, targeting pest species in the area. Contributing significantly to the Townsville Community Garden, which has been greatly appreciated from community members with excellent feedback acknowledged. Keep an eye out over the next week for some great stories on our wonderful trainees who participated in the program.

16.01.2022 WWF funds Koala habitat establishment Koala populations are in trouble across Australia but the situation on the Richmond floodplain in north eastern NSW is dire. Recent drought conditions paired with little or no habitat has forced koalas to literally eat themselves out of house and home. Eucalypt trees once covered in fresh leaf for the koalas to feed on were reduced to bare stems and constant browsing pressure exacerbated the effect of drought with many trees dying. WWF...-Australia have funded Envite Environment in partnership with Minyumai Land Holding Aboriginal Corporation to transform areas once used for Sugarcane production into koala habitat. In one day a team consisting of 9 Envite Bush Regenerators and 8 Minyumai Rangers managed to plant just over 3000 koala food and habitat trees. Koalas will have a significant increase in food and shelter resources over the coming years as a result of this important work.

13.01.2022 Shaymus and the Skilling Queenslanders for Work crew have been making use of the wet weather up on the Gold Coast. They've completed a planting of 1000 trees on very steep ground. This is the first planting the Gold Coast crew have done, and will probably be one of the more challenging any crew could do! Well done team!

03.01.2022 The SMILE says it all! Kelly has been very passionate and driven since joining the Skilling Queenslanders for Work traineeship team. From a sporadic employment history in hospitality, Kelly’s enthusiastic attitude at work is reflective of what she has said about our program. This traineeship has been the opportunity of a lifetime for me. Prior to this I had several jobs in hospitality and I never felt as though I was contributing to anything meaningful. I'm very passion...ate about the environment. I love hiking and nature and this traineeship has not only helped me learn about the natural world but contribute to its preservation. I'm grateful for the chance I've been given and thankful because I've found a career I genuinely love. Kelly has managed to secure a job with Townsville City Council as a Trainee. She'll be doing a 2 year Traineeship and a Cert 3 in Conservation and Land Management. Congratulations, Kelly! It was wonderful to have you as part of the team.
