23.01.2022 Incident in WA - Serious injury, 6 years of costs and time, manager charged, and reputations damaged. The City of Armadale in Western Australia has had a fine increased by $80,000 over a 2014 incident in which a member of the public was seriously injured when struck by a front-end loader at a Council site. The City was originally fined $30,000 (plus costs) in April 2018 over the incident after being charged with failing to provide and maintain a safe workplace. WorkSafe appea...led the penalty to the Full Court of the Supreme Court that found the original fine of $30,000 was manifestly inadequate and the original decision was overturned and the City of Armadale instead fined $110,000. The incident occurred in August 2014, when a member of the public visiting the Hilbert landfill site was putting the tailgate back on his trailer after unloading green waste and was struck by a loader driven by a site supervisor employed by the City of Armadale. He suffered very serious injuries, resulting in him being unable to work. WorkSafe WA Commissioner Darren Kavanagh said today the successful appeal in this matter should send a strong message to WA employers. The message to be taken from this case is that employers are responsible for the safety and health of their employees and anyone else who is lawfully in their workplaces, Mr Kavanagh said. The decision of the Court of Appeal and resultant increase in the penalty reinforces the message that safe systems of work need to be in place in areas where mobile plant is operating in the vicinity of pedestrians. This case has taken 6 years and absorbed significant resources - it was avoidable! The site manager was also personally fined with the Court finding that the offence occurred with his consent or neglect. He was fined $12500 plus costs of $4950. He knew there was no Safe Work Procedure for the operation of loaders at the site and he allowed mobile plant and pedestrians to be present at the same time. WorkSafe Commissioner Ian Munns stated, "This is a good opportunity to remind employers that not only are they ultimately responsible for the safety and health of their employees and anyone else who is lawfully in workplaces, but that their senior managers must also accept a level of responsibility for safety and health in their areas. Stay safe.

22.01.2022 A CSIRO study has been released today showing the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 can live for up to 28 days on surfaces such as mobile phone screens and ATMs much longer than previously thought. . Key points from the study that will be released in The Journal of Virology today: . The virus survives on most surfaces for about six to seven days before starting to lose potency... . On some surfaces, such as glass and paper banknotes, the virus lasts for longer than a month . Even after two weeks, there was still plenty of live, infectious virus which could potentially infect someone. . The researchers said that even crockery in a restaurant was a potential source of infection because stainless steel is commonly used for cutlery. . On some surfaces, such as glass and paper banknotes, the virus was still there after one month. . It seems that it lasts longer than other viruses such as influenza, which only lasts a few days. . Cold weather keeps the virus alive for longer. The scientists also tested the effect of temperature and found the colder it was, the longer the virus survived on a surface. . It is important to ensure good hygiene in cool rooms as the virus can survive longer in cooler areas - for example, if you reduced the temperature to around 6 degrees Celsius, you could extend the life of the virus10-fold. The study's main conclusion: These findings demonstrate SARS-CoV-2 can remain infectious for significantly longer time periods than generally considered possible. epar is preparing a Team Stand UP Talk that will summarise this recent study and will send that Stand Up talk out later this week.

18.01.2022 AS YOUR BUSINESS REOPENS THIS IS WHAT CAN HAPPEN IF SOCIAL DISTANCING RULES ARE IGNORED. A coronavirus second wave, and a reintroduction of lock down measures are feared after workers and businesses failed to follow social distancing rules in South Korea. REENTERING LOCK DOWN... From today, South Korea will be reintroducing new strict lock down measures following the biggest spike of new coronavirus infections in nearly two months. WHERE DID THE NEW INFECTIONS COME FROM? More than 250 new infections were traced to clubs and bars and another cluster has been linked to a warehouse near Seoul. There have been reports the warehouse company failed to enforce social distancing and allowed workers displaying symptoms to stay at work. THE OUTCOME Unfortunately, it appears that lapses in vigilance have resulted in the government deciding, from today, to shut public facilities such as parks, museums and state-run theatres for two weeks to slow the spread of the virus. THE LESSONS LEARNED The failure of people to follow social distancing and the failure of businesses to enforce social distancing, hygiene, and keeping people with symptoms away from work, has resulted in a serious setback for South Korea and South Korean businesses. As all Australian businesses start to reopen it is critical social distancing protocols are in place and that they are enforced. University of Melbourne epidemiologist Tony Blakely fears these types of outbreaks will become the new norm until there's a COVID-19 vaccine. "Any country that did get it under control quickly, be it China, Singapore, South Korea, Germany, they're not suddenly immune. "They're not suddenly going to be able to function normally and that includes Australia. As soon as we open up, infections will take off again." This is a timely reminder for everyone not to relax their social distancing and hygiene efforts in the workplace. Stay Safe

15.01.2022 New Workplace Manslaughter Laws Start This Week in Victoria. A new criminal offence of workplace manslaughter has been introduced into occupational health and safety laws in Victoria to mirror the laws of Queensland, Western Australia and The A.C.T. These penalties reflect the seriousness of the offence and are designed to help prevent workplace deaths by creating a strong deterrent for organisations and individual officers against breaching their occupational health and safety duties. 14.01.2022 CORONAVIRUS TIP: YOUR PHONE IS 10 TIMES DIRTIER THAN YOUR TOILET SEAT Did you know your mobile phone is 10 times dirtier than your toilet seat! Your phone is also dirtier than the bottom of your shoes or the inside of your dogs food dish. It's a hotbed for germs and bacteria.... THE AVERAGE AUSTRALIAN CHECKS THEIR PHONE AS MANY AS 130 TIMES A DAY. This is a real problem when your phone is dirtier than a toilet seat because every time you use your phone you provide an opportunity for germs to move from your fingers to your phone to your face. Scientists at the University of Arizona have found that cell phones carry up to 10 times more bacteria than most toilet seats, so the next time you feel the need to put your phone to your ear or send a text, think about how clean your hands are and how clean your phone is. We all love our phones but we need to keep them clean: . Dont share your phone with others . Wash your hands regularly. . Dont bring your phone to the toilet . Dont bring your phone to the gym . Dont use your phone while eating . Learn to wash your hands properly . Clean your phone on a regular basis. Have a quick team meeting and all clean your phones. Another small step towards minimising disease transmission.
13.01.2022 Climate Change Team Stand UP Talk. Climate change is not something bad that might happen, it’s something bad that’s happening. As climate scientist Kate Marvel put it, Climate change isn’t a cliff we fall off, but a slope we slide down. Every bit makes it worse. No matter how far down the slope we go, there’s never reason to give up on lowering our emissions. Exceeding 1.5C, is likely to happen in our lifetimes, but it doesn’t mean anyone should feel apathetic. It means th...ere is no practical danger of anyone, at any level, doing too much or acting too quickly to better manage their carbon footprint. epar has released its December Team Stand UP Talk for supervisors and managers to share important climate change facts and information with their teams. The document will be arriving in epar customers emails this afternoon.
11.01.2022 MANUAL HANDLING - CHECK YOUR STAFF DISCOMFORT LEVELS IN 10 MINUTES. The real expert for preventing wear and tear on your body at work is YOU. You alone feel the physical stress of your job on your body day in and day out. The relationship of musculoskeletal pain and discomfort due to awkward work postures, forces, static loading and over-use is widely accepted. To help you prevent injuries and provide the safest and most sustainable workplace possible, today, as part of the D...irty Dozen EHS Initiative, a Worker Discomfort Survey has been uploaded into every Connect Pro 2.0 customers Inspection App. Throughout February, epar's Dirty Dozen EHS Accelerator initiative is targeting Manual Handling and you can assign this survey to your staff through the Connect Pro Inspections App. It will help you understand what your manual handling risks are and what can be done to reduce or eliminate them. If your staff lift, carry, push or pull, or conduct repetitive or sustained manual work as part of their job, please have them complete the Discomfort Survey. The information will help you ensure your manual tasks are as safe as possible.

05.01.2022 Employer must pay $760K over obese workers death This case highlights how important it is to have robust manual handling protocols in place at your workplace and it supports epar's Dirty Dozen campaign for February that targetted manual handling risk for all Connect 2.0 customers. This case certainly demonstrates how important it is for every epar customer to complete the Worker Discomfort Survey that we uploaded into each Connect 2.0 platform in February. The NSW Workers Co...mpensation Commission (NSWWCC) found that a workers death from a pulmonary embolism was ultimately connected to a back injury he sustained at work. This was even though the worker was overweight and had deep vein thrombosis in both legs and his left arm before his injury. The NSWWCC found that the weight gained by the deceased worker following his work injury materially contributed to, and was at least a cause of, the development of the deep vein thrombosis that was found at the time of his death and which in turn led to the pulmonary emboli. Work injury to blame for workers weight gain The worker sustained an injury to his lower back in 2011 during a compulsory training exercise resulting in him requiring five back operations over the following four years. During that time, his weight increased from 100 kilograms to 134 kilograms. While the employer admitted liability for the workers back injury, it disputed liability for his death because of his long history of deep vein thrombosis. It referred to a doctors report a year prior to his injury which warned of the ongoing health risks he faced with his condition. The Court found, There is an unbroken chain of events from the work injury sustained by the deceased worker to the pulmonary emboli which caused his death. Arbitrator Isaksen ordered the employer to pay $760,000 to the deceased workers estate, as well as $3,735 to his mother for funeral expenses.
05.01.2022 A $100,000 fine has been issued after young child was seriously injured by golf cart driven by a school groundskeeper. On 12 November, a not-for-profit organisation in Brisbane was fined $100,000 after a golf cart incident left a young child seriously injured. The school groundskeeper was driving a golf buggy on a concrete pathway adjacent to a toilet block when a six-year-old year student ran from the toilet block in front of the cart which struck him. He suffered a subdural... haemorrhage, fractured left tibia and damage to his left fibula, spending five days in hospital and another week at home recovering. The investigation revealed the defendant failed to take any steps in relation to the risk posed by the golf cart being used within the school grounds. In sentencing, Magistrate Trevor Morgan observed the use of the buggy in a school around primary school-aged children posed a blindly obvious risk if not managed appropriately. The Court found there was a clear need to conduct a safety assessment and implement plans for using the cart. Magistrate Morgan indicated the failure by the defendant in this instance saw a child suffer serious injuries, which required significant and painful episodes of physical and psychological rehabilitation. In relation to the general culpability and extent of blame, the Magistrate indicated it was quite significant. The defendant was fined $100,000 plus court costs. epar recommends: 1. Implement the epar Safe Work Procedure (SWP) for the safe operation of a golf cart. If you do not have this procedure, epar customers are able to order the document at the discounted fee of $49. Orders can be placed via email to [email protected] 2. The epar SAO's (Safe Act Observations Checklists) be regularly conducted to ensure staff are operating golf carts safely. 3. Issue your staff with their own Epar Risk Pocket Book. If you need any advice or support please call our free support hotline 1300 471 175.
04.01.2022 Communicating Reliable COVID-19 Information Stress and anxiety can be better managed when we are in command of the facts. That's why it is important to keep your staff up-to-date with COVID-19 information remembering it is changing on a daily basis. epar's medical expert, Dr Janet Hall is regularly reviewing COVID-19 data and has suggested we share the below information with you from the Department of Health. It shows the national COVID-19 status on 6 April and compares that ...with yesterday's (6 May) national status. Viewing the summary table it certainly looks like the last month of isolation and social distancing is working. Workers respond better to open and reliable communication and respond quickly to government updates and health advisories. Sharing this information in your workplace may help reduce their stress as much as yours.

03.01.2022 Will you accept the challenge?: To create a Coronavirus Resource Corner in your workplace. Workplace health and safety regulators have published advice and recommendations regarding employer responsibilities about the importance of providing staff with safe systems of work and up to date information on COVID-19. Their advice to employers to manage the increasing risk associated with the Coronavirus in the workplace is clear - Employers have a duty to provide and maintain a sa...fe workplace and during this time they are encouraging all businesses to review the workplace to ensure that it is, to the extent that is reasonably practicable, free from risk, and that arrangements are considered and put in place to assist workers, and that they are able to respond to any infection incident, should the need arise. They are requiring every business to actively manage risk, promote social distancing, promote good hand and respiratory hygiene, increase cleaning of common areas within the work environment, manage and monitor staff anxiety, and to keep monitoring the COVID-19 situation as it develops. Challenge accepted. Our Commitment: To ensure we leverage our safety and medical expertise to provide you the COVID-19 information you need to ensure management, staff, and visitors are well informed as relevant COVID-19 information comes to hand. All we ask is that you communicate this information to your staff and post it in your Coronavirus Resource Corner.
03.01.2022 The numbers are in. If saving time and money and lowering risk is important read on. Last month, epar launched the EHS Dirty Dozen EHS Accelerator Initiative and targeted Spill Risk. That initiative not only reduced risk and liability, it saved every Connect 2.0 customer over two dozen hours by automating key spill risk management work and protocols. That's 3 x 8 work hour days saving thousands of dollars. Starting February 12 we do it all again when we target Manual Handling.... Here is why manual handling made it into the epar Dirty Dozen Initiative: . In 2019 Manual Handling injuries in the workplace cost Australia $28 Billion. . Workplace injuries cant be measured by the economic cost alone. Some workers pay a high mental price following a workplace injury. . The three occupations with the highest rate of serious claims were labourers, machinery operators and drivers. We're excited to be providing solutions to manage manual handling risk when the campaign kicks off February 12. We'll be providing risk assessments, protocols, risk controls, a traceable manual handling safety alert will be sent to all staff, and a manual handling training quiz will drop into every one of your staff members Connect 2.0 Dashboard. #ehs #golf #sustainability #eparconnect

01.01.2022 GOLF IN ASIA POST COVID-19 Congratulations Eric, Patrick and Bill for a great webinar Teeing Up For Success Post COVID-19. Over 150 tuned in from across Asia and were treated to some great futuristic and forward thinking on the opportunities for golf in the COVID and post COVID era. Key points that resonated with me included: 1. The need to embrace nature and for clubs to go back to nature to help grow the game... 2. The move from a service orientated business to one that is also a clean and safe and service oriented business 3. The opportunity for golf to be seen as a safe haven will help grow the game and attract families 4. The future will be a digital and a safer one 5. Innovative communication with members and the community is key the need to communicate uniquely 5. Surveys across Asia are showing members and players will still demand well maintained playing surfaces no rest for the Superintendents. 6. Big budget items to plan for - maintaining COVID-19 safety and hygiene, and big cleaning and disinfecting costs. Im looking forward to the next webinar Eric, great job everyone. Stay safe.
