25.01.2022 In between all the thorns #juliarose

12.01.2022 Pile it high, watch it fly. XO

11.01.2022 First box of the year, 10 days after the hail storm. We want to have more of our summer fruiting crops ready - eggos, tommies, caps - but they are taking their time in the cool weather after the thumping they took. Butterheads flattened, most leaves are holey or we cut them off completely (or they were in a spot that didn’t get totally hammered)...nearly everything is dented, some things aren’t going to be present in the future boxes as we had planned. But really - we are gla...d we had the post Xmas break to allow some recovery and the scraps will do good back in the garden as compost. All in all, we are grateful for the community and chef support we received, taking changes on the chin and sharing kindness. 02.01.2022 Well... this is a bit exciting! Hot Sauce is never just hot sauce. I’d like to say this came out of covid, some sort of fast business pivoting trick... but actually this has been 4 years in the making; between moving farms, babies, droughts, fires, pandemics... this was a slow considered expression of our inner selves, and using the tarot to playfully navigate life’s meaning.... The beginning: We were given some habanero seed from @mellowhabanero, saving seed ever since. We have selected a few other ol’ favs and some new heirlooms to save also (taa @row7seeds). We started a volunteer residency program on the farm @bulamirri and the first people here were chefs (we see youz @team_little_farm_sarah) who sparked the fermentation idea. We then bottled some of that and gave it to mates. We found an old smoker on the side of the road (little did you know @cliff_view_orchard this was love at first sight for us). Drinking wine & stoking the smoker on cool Autumn afternoons as our summer-farming-bones ached, was bliss, here rises the smoked chilli. We sampled the heatless habanada on the baby, passed the test. We sat around the kitchen table talking about our dogs, the farms namesake, resilience, and the tarot. The label idea was born. Finally COVID, 2020 - and it was a perfect time to begin consulting with childhood neighbour and good friend @houlart: talented street artist (and cool English teacher)... who took to the idea like a crystal ball in the clairvoyants back room. Then between sick babies, CSA models and restaurant orders, joining cows (borrowed a bull), breathing in the farm that we love... I poured over many decks for consistent themes while Hayden wrote down the tasting notes (he has a masters in Flavour and Aroma for goodness sake) and then I brought the description to life. Finally Sister-in-law @julesbee_photography pulled it all together.... So here we are: to celebrate we find ourselves drinking a very good pet nat made by @franklythiswinewasmadebybob that we had swapped for hot sauce months ago. 5 flavours, 5 tarot cards that include the farm, the two dogs, and us. So quintessentially us. First stockist: @lyttletonstores, tomorrow.
