25.01.2022 This tree in Wanneroo has been painted blue to raise awareness of mental health wellbeing. This is a particular pertinent topic for our community. Half of all adults with epilepsy experience depression and around one in five experiences generalised anxiety disorder. It is actually thought that people living with a diagnosis of epilepsy experience depression at two to three times the rate of the general population and are more likely to experience depression than people with o...ther chronic conditions (Source: Beyond Blue). If we can support you or your family, please dont hesitate to reach out by calling 1300 852 853. 20.01.2022 Tomorrow is R U OK day? Those living with an epilepsy diagnosis experience depression at up to three times the rate of the general population. Sadly suicide rates are also significantly higher. Some research also shows that many parents who care for children who are living with epilepsy actually experience PTSD as a result of witnessing their childrens battles with epilepsy. Tomorrow is an important day. EVERY DAY is an important day to talk about mental health well-being. 17.01.2022 Thanks to the Subiaco Post for helping to raise awareness of our support groups and how essential the support of the public is, as we receive no government funding.

15.01.2022 This mural was spotted today in Butler. Do you have a special someone who helps lighten your load, supports you and makes journeying life with epilepsy easier? Or is your special someone, the person that lifts you up and helps you reach your full potential, an Epilepsy Warrior? - there are over 27,000 Epilepsy Warriors in WA. A shout out to you, our wonderful WA community.

15.01.2022 Whilst many people with well controlled epilepsy are able to legally drive and many, lose their license for a period and then regain it, if you have a seizure or are living with an epilepsy diagnosis, you are obliged to report your condition to the Department of Transport in WA. We know that losing your license can be incredibly difficult, however, without reporting, aside from the obvious risks to your safety and the safety of others, you risk prosecution or invalidated insu...rance. This document helps our community to understand the process that is in place, that authorities follow, when they make decisions around a persons ability to drive when facing the challenges of epilepsy. https://austroads.com.au//medical-standards-for-licensing-6 Our Compassionate Ear Service is available tomorrow morning for anyone wanting to speak to a qualified volunteer with lived experience of living life with an epilepsy diagnosis. Phone 1300 852 853.

14.01.2022 Did you watch the Australian Epilepsy Project on ABC 7.30 late last month? Epilepsy Queenslands patron and previous epilepsy brain surgery warrior and NRL legend/broadcaster, Wally Lewis, was featured as a key supporter for the ambitious project. The aim is to to change the lives of people with epilepsy, by creating specialist hubs which researchers claim will lead to faster diagnosis and better treatment. The Australian Epilepsy Project is bidding for $65 million of government funding under the Medical Research Future Fund. You can watch the full story, including Wallys commentary, on the abc: https://www.abc.net.au//epilepsy-treatment-new-pr/12399060

14.01.2022 Epilepsy WA was founded in 1963 by a mother of 7, The Hon Ruby Hutchinson MLC. Ruby was the first woman to be elected to the Legislative Council in WA, the fourth woman to be elected to the Parliament of WA also the founder of the consumer watchdog, CHOICE. A shout out today to all those trailblazing women out there who, like Ruby did, make a real difference to the world and to all the female Epilepsy Warriors in our WA community - daughters, neices, mothers, sisters or friends who battle epilepsy daily, we salute you. This post from The Parliament of Western Australia about our wonderful founder Ruby is simply delightful.

14.01.2022 Today - September 5 was named International Day of Charity by the United Nations in 2012 to recognise and celebrate of the power of charity in alleviating human suffering and helping to create resilient & inclusive communities. 10.01.2022 This year our annual Purple Walk couldnt go ahead in person due to Covid, so we did the next best thing and held a virtual event with live entertainment. The extremely talented local WA artist Ezereve performed our opening and closing songs to raise much needed epilepsy awareness and vital funds - this day is a particularly important one on our calendar, as we survive without government funding and rely on our walk to help keep our many services going. The songs Ezereve sang... were dedicated to the many epilepsy warriors in our WA community and those that stand by their side. We were also sure to remember those loved ones who are no longer with us, the loss of loved ones due to epilepsy is something that we are acutely aware of and remember each day in the office. Ezereve did an amazing tribute. The Northern Valley News is acknowledging Ezereve today and we thought that you, our wonderful supporters, might like to see this article. See more

07.01.2022 Spring has sprung (although the weather over the past few days had us thinking otherwise!) September also marks the beginning of our new membership year. As a charity that receives no government funding, and generates limited fundraising income, the modest income we receive from our members through their membership fees, helps our organisation to continue to provide an array of services to help support those whose lives are touched by a diagnosis of epilepsy. Some of the bene...fits of becoming a member include; participation in one of our support groups, discounted rates to our Annual Purple Walk 4 Epilepsy WA and access to our Free Seizure Alert Bed Mat Loan Service. Furthermore, the combined voice of our community of members, helps to give the organisation the strength of voice to lobby for positive change. For anybody thinking of becoming a member of Epilepsy WA, you can do so via this link https://www.epilepsywa.asn.au/membership/ We wish to thank all current members and we hope you will renew your membership with us. Renewal letters will be sent out to all current members over the next few days. There are many exciting things happening here at Epilepsy WA - we hope that you will join us as members for the 2020/2021 year and beyond! See more

06.01.2022 Epilepsy WA Nedlands office houses what is thought to be the largest display of seizure alert technology options in Australia. We also provide a range of free webinars on the subject to help people to find out more about the devices so they can make informed decisions about which device might be best suited to their needs. Our latest webinar is about the NightWatch, a nighttime device that monitors both movement and heart rate. To view our seizure alert technology fact sheet visit www.epilepsywa.asn.au/seizure-alert-technology To view our NightWatch webinar visit https://youtu.be/paPjl9lxQjw

06.01.2022 In March, on Purple Day, the iconic Bell Tower illuminated purple at our request to raise vital epilepsy awareness, helping to shine a light on this common yet rarely spoken about condition. What a sight it was. #epilepsyaware

03.01.2022 The NightWatch is just one of the many seizure alert devices that we have recorded online information sessions/webinars about to help our community to better understand the options that are available to them. We also display this device and many others in our seizure alert technology display at our Nedlands office. To view our free online webinars visit https://www.epilepsywa.asn.au/online-seminars/ To view our seizure alert fact sheet visit https://www.epilepsywa.asn.au/seizure-alert-technology/ PS the use of the word epileptic is not our preferred terminology when referring to Epilepsy Warriors/those living with this common neurological condition

03.01.2022 A wonderful supporter, volunteer and inspirational Epilepsy Warrior, Warwick, is in the office today putting together our new cabinet that will house our seizure alert technology devices display. Thanks so much Warrick and to the kind soul who donated the display cabinet. We now have 10 seizure alert devices on display . 02.01.2022 We spotted this sign and free essential groceries for anyone in need at a fish and chip shop in Joondalup. What a lovely expression of care for the local community! We at Epilepsy WA want our WA community to know we are here for you, if you need us. We know that sometimes everyone has a bump in the road and some roads contain more bumps than others. Our support groups, telephone information line and compassionate ear service are here for you and we really do care. Call 1300 852 853 to access our services or visit https://www.epilepsywa.asn.au/services/ to learn more about what we do and how we may be able to help ease your load.

02.01.2022 Today marks International Youth Day. We would like to acknowledge all the amazing young people that we have come to know in our community. Those living with epilepsy and their brothers, sisters and friends who often fundraise and volunteer with us and those who attend our support groups. Also to the many students we work with throughout the year on various projects. Its been a tough year and the resilience, strength and kindness youve shown is an example for the world to see. You are a huge part our organisation and we wish you a Happy International Youth Day!

02.01.2022 Epilepsy affects more West Australians than cerebral palsy, MS, muscular dystrophy, Parkinsons disease and blindness combined. Yet, epilepsy is a condition that often remains very much in the shadows. This article from the Post Newspaper is calling out for volunteers to assist in our annual Perth street appeal to help raise vital funds and much needed epilepsy awareness. Without government funding this day is essential to our organisation and any help you can offer will be greatly appreciated.

02.01.2022 CALL OUT TO ALL TEACHERS AND EDUCATORS WITHIN OUR COMMUNITY - we are looking for a school, class or childcare centre to hold a quick and easy awareness raising event within the next week. We know that end of term is approaching but we have had prior arrangements fall through. We are working in partnership with these talented students from John Curtin Leadership Academy. They are designing a website for us aimed at assisting educators with awareness raising and fundraising ac...tivities. The website is designed to make the process simple, giving educators access to as many resources and ideas as possible. One part of their project is to hold an awareness raising activity within a class or school. They will do all the work and the event could be as simple as Purple Dress Day, Silly Sock Day, or holding a ribbon stall (where we will provide the ribbons). If this sounds of interest to you, please enquire below or email [email protected]. We will be extremely grateful! Please also share this post through your networks. Thank you!
