20.01.2022 COVID -19 and your PETS There is no general evidence to suggest COVID-19 can be transmitted by or to domestic dogs or cats. We do however suggest all pet owners practice appropriate hand hygiene before and after handling their pet, their food, and washing food and water bowls. We also suggest minimizing close contact with your pet during this time, such as hugging, kissing, face to face contact or sleeping on your bed. Please follow the advice of State and Federal Governments ...along with the Australian and World Medical Associations - personal hygiene, travel, social distancing etc. If your pet is unwell and you are concerned, please contact the clinic on 93701900. We wish the absolute best for you and your pets. Kind Regards, Dr Noel Smith and Management Epsom Road Veterinary Clinic. See more

19.01.2022 Case Study/PSA: Kaffir Lily toxicity in dogs (Clivia miniata) Now that summer is here, please keep an eye out on dogs chewing on or ingesting flowers or leaves of the Kaffir Lily a plant which only flowers once a year and usually has long green strap-like leaves. Puppies In particular explore and learn about their world by tasting and chewing on novel objects. At the time of teething this behaviour will be amplified and they will generally destruct anything in their path!... Please be sure to deter your dog from chewing on certain flowers including but not limited to the Kaffir Lily a lesser known plant that can be toxic to dogs if ingested. Signs of toxicity include - Vomiting - Salivation - Tremors, seizures or inco-ordinated gait - Diarrhoea - Lethargy If you suspect your curious pup or boisterous dog may have ingested a Kaffir Lily or any other plant please call us for advice or your nearest Veterinary Emergency Centre. Warm wishes, Dr Jana and the team at Epsom Road Veterinary Clinic See more

13.01.2022 5 Tips to help your pet beat the heat this summer! 1. Use air conditioning. Fans can help a little bit too but many pets wont lay directly in front of a fan. Fans arent nearly as successful at truly lowering the inside temperature, so an AC is better if possible. 2. Avoid spending long amounts of time outside when its hot. Try to avoid going outside during the peak heat hours (roughly noon to 3 or so). To get in play time (or walks) we go early in the morning or late at ni...ght when its cooler. 3. Keep plenty of fresh water available at all times. 4. Doggy popsicles similar to how we enjoy ice cream or popsicles when were hot, dogs like them as well. You could even try filling (with safe dog friendly food) Kongs and freezing them! 5. Cooling pet mat. There are a handful of companies that make mats that can be frozen or have water added to give your pet a cold place to lay.

12.01.2022 Tomorrow is Koala Conservation Day. Hopefully the heat wont hit these little guys too much and everyone involved can have a great day! ALSO NOTE: Remember, its going to be hotter outside today then it was yesterday! Keep your furry friends cool and in doors with plenty of fresh water!

07.01.2022 Remember when you were a kid and absolutely loved going to Grandmas because shed keep a secret stash of sweet treats? Well Ivy found Grandmas stash of Teddy Bear biscuits, licked all the chocolate off and left the soggy, naked Teddy Bears as evidence. Weighing in at only 2kg, we werent sure how/if the dark chocolate would affect Ivy so this little #yorkshireterrier was rushed down to us to induce vomiting. Pictured is Ivy suddenly regretting all of her bad life choices The cocoa used to make chocolate contains theobromine which is very slowly metabolised by dogs allowing it to build to toxic levels and the higher the cocoa percentage, the more potent (thus making dark chocolate more dangerous than milk chocolate). Chocolate toxicity can cause tremors, seizures, heart attacks and death.

06.01.2022 Rat-bait toxicity in a cat who ate a rat! Gracie, a sweet domestic short hair (DSH) cat, usually has an appetite for rats and mice, and had eaten a rat at the start of May, which didnt sit quite right with her and she vomited it up. Then 2 days later she presented to our clinic not being herself, quiet and lethargic. The vets noticed she was breathing quickly and had slightly paler gums than usual. When she was admitted in hospital she had small amounts of blood in her urine... and a blood test revealed anemia. Further work up was done to determine where the source of the bleeding was from, so we conducted a blood test to determine whether she had the ability to clot and recommended for her to be monitored after hours at Advanced Vet Care while we get the results of the blood test. The blood result arrived showing that she had a reduced blood clotting ability, most likely as a result of secondary rodenticide toxicity from ingesting a rat/mouse that had been baited. This is usually quite rare, as cats usually dont ingest rat bait unlike dogs, but they can be affected if they ingest rats who have been baited. Gracie was started on oral vitamin K therapy which is necessary in the clotting pathway in order for the blood to have an ability to clot. Rodenticides target vitamin K and deplete the bodys stores. She needed to be on a vitamin K therapy for 4 weeks until the body would generate its own vitamin K necessary for clotting to take place. Gracie finished her vitamin K medications last week and after repeating her clotting parameters, they were within normal range. We are very thankful Gracies parents responded so quickly, as it was a life-threatening situation. Written by: Dr Jana Kragic

06.01.2022 Christmas Food No Nos Cooked bones: Do not feed your dog or cat cooked bones. They can splinter easily and damage their throat and intestines.... Chocolate: The ingestion of chocolate by pets can result in vomiting, diarrhea and hyperactivity, as well as muscle twitching, increased urination or excessive panting. Chocolate contains a naturally occurring stimulant called theobromine; extreme poisoning can kill your pet. Xmas Pudding: Many pets are intolerant to dairy foods so Christmas pudding is not safe to feed your pet. We would also avoid giving your pets milk, as many are lactose intolerant so milk can lead to upset bellies. Grapes and raisins can also be toxic to pets; so reach for a pet-food treat instead. Mistletoe: Christmas Plants and Flowers such as Poinsettias, amaryllis, mistletoe and holly are poisonous to your pets. Make sure they are out of their reach, as consumption could result in illness or death Meat (Turkey and Ham and Burgers, oh my!): You should always remember that pets are not humans and have different digestive systems to us. How we prepare meat can be higher in fat then our pets digestive tract can handle. Pancreatitis, gastro and upset bellies can be the devastating results. Make sure any food that you give your pet is in keeping with their standard diet

06.01.2022 SEVERE WEATHER WARNING! A friendly reminder to all pet owners, please be cautious, keep our furry friends inside and hydrated on these awfully hot days! Walk your dogs during the early hours or late afternoons to avoid the hottest part of the day and be gentle to those paws by ensuring they do not come in contact with hot sand or concrete. Stay Cool - Team Epsom Road

03.01.2022 At this time of year, we tend to see a spike in Christmas themed illness. Whether it be pancreatitis from indulging on the Christmas ham or major abdominal surgery to retrieve that missing string of tinsel. Everyone deserves to have a safe and happy festive season, including our pets. This list is by no means extensive, so we advise owners to be extra vigilant and contact their Vet if they have any concerns or questions.
