25.01.2022 A great illustration of how a horse is knocked off balance by using the inside rein to turn/bend. The right is correct, as the horse is turning with both should...ers, the left horse has been knocked over his outside shoulder, and will fight for his balance beneath the rider by allowing his haunches to fall in. 23.01.2022 A bit sad I had to make the difficult decision to cancel my Painted horses in Motion presentation at The SaddleFitter Brisbane CDN next week. I was really looking forward to presenting an educational and exciting show alongside Kathryn Sullivan-Butt. We had some great ideas and would have been very entertaining yet informative. However, there is always next year and I’ll be really looking forward to putting on a bigger and better presentation Good luck to everyone compe...ting and especially my beautiful clients I am upset I haven’t been available to assist you all with pre massage treatments leading up to and during the event this year. Please know I’ll be there in spirit with you all Brittney xxx
23.01.2022 Extremely sad to be passing this news on ....so much effort has gone into organizing this event and I was really looking forward to presenting! Hopefully it will be rescheduled
22.01.2022 Does your horse's tail swing? (Re-shared with links in the comments to avoid it being considered Spam. This post had 400 shares in 3 days so we think some of y...ou would like to be able to share and save the Equinology massage tutorial and KER EquiNews link again.) If a horse's tail gets caught between his hind legs, he is not using his body properly. If the tail lays flat and listless these are clues that energy, messages and feedback from the brain to the body and back may not be traveling up and down his spine properly. If the tail is clamped down, the horse may be in fear or in pain, closing the hindquarters down. This is something to discuss with your veterinarian. If your horse's tail swishes constantly, and more so during transitions, changes, or anytime you make a request, your aids may be too loud or he may be frustrated with the work. A little swishing when asked to do something demanding for a short time is different from constant swishing. We must observe and know our horse to figure out what is focus and concentration, and what is upset. The tail reflects the health of our horse's spine. Clamping or excessive, abnormal tail activity can also be linked to: Kissing spine The anus, urinary or reproductive organs. Tack fit related pain( bridle, bit, girth, saddle) Ulcers Other sources of pain (feet, hormones, arthritis, etc) As the spine undulates in a slightly serpentine pattern throughout our horses' body, his tail should reflect this motion. As our horse uses his back and body better and better, as his balance changes and improves, he will use his tail differently. We want to keep an eye on the tail and note improvements or set backs as they tell us how well the training is progressing or is stalling. We look for a tail that is carried in a soft arch slightly away from the body with the mass of hair rhythmically moving from hock to hock in a swinging pendulum motion. Touching your horse's tail Gently lifting it and rotating it Combing the hair with your fingers Taking segments and gently pulling them in a circular motion All these gentle actions done carefully while observing your horse's reactions will give you feedback about how his entire spine, back and body feels. This should be done easily, with no resistance, the tail should have a good weight in your hands and feel alive, not dead. PLEASE PROCEED WITH CAUTION. Stand to the side of your horse at first and stay close to the croup. If your horse reflexively clamps down or threatens to kick, do not try to force the issue or become aggressive. Reassure your horse with a neutral touch and your voice. DO NOT INSIST If the problem persist, contact your health care pro, do not insist as you and your horse may get hurt. UPDATE 1 Why do horses carry their tails to one side? Insights from Debranne Pattillo, founder, Equinology, Inc. "There are numerous reasons for a tail held to one side. A spinal misalignment, an injury, restrictions to any of the soft tissues, a reproductive concern or a lame limb can be one of the many issues. If a horse is not bearing equal weight on a limb in a unilateral (one sided) issue the horse tends to rest that limb. In resting that limb it swings the pelvis forward and points the sacral (croup) and caudal (tail) bones towards that limb. Try it for yourself. Put your hands behind your back; hold your hands against your spine in an upside down prayer fashion. Now, lift your heel to offload your leg so your pelvis of that side moves forward and you will see that your fingers point to that leg. It doesn’t take long for this adaptation of posture to show up and begin compensatory issues. Some of the other muscles that you need to consider are two of the hamstrings; the semimembranosus and the semitendinosus. Horses are a bit different than us and have attachments to the spine; with 2 strong attachments to the first two tail bones. If one of these hamstrings are tight and when they are in this shortened state, they will incline those bones to the restricted side. Voila, crooked tail." For additional insights into crooked tails & detailed, extremely well illustrated massage recommendations please check the pdf article in the comments our friend, Debranne Pattillo, founder of Equinology created. UPDATE 2 We read an insightful post from one reader we thought well worth sharing. It pointed out the potential relationship between a harder tail grooming and washing experience and possible surrounding muscle soreness: Fran Welsby wrote: " Hi, do you find how a horse accepts their tail being washed also gives you clues? We shampoo, condition then use a de-tangle spray thru the tail then using our fingers carefully separate out the hairs from the roots to the ends. I have found that the ponies that relax, give me their tails to do all this generally fall asleep while I work, those that don't often will be the ones with some haunch/ham string issues." An interesting observation. For a source of research articles on this and basically every subject, we recommend checking Kentucky Equine Research's (KER) EquiNews free research online library. 10.01.2022 PULLBACK HORSE AND THE DAMAGE THEY INFLICT Unfortunately this seams to be the theam this week maybe because of the smoky air and hazy sky. We have all ...had a horse pull back at some point, we all know that it can cause damage. Here is a closer look at some of the internal structures that can be damagrd and have body wide implications. So here is a fast superficial run down ..... The dura mater is a sac that envelops the arachnoid and has been modified to serve several functions. The dura mater surrounds and supports the large venous channels (dural sinuses) carrying blood from the brain toward the heart. The dura mater is partitioned into several septa, which support the brain. These myodural bridges provide passive and active anchoring of the spinal cord. They may also be involved in a dural tension monitoring system to prevent dural infolding, and maintain patency of the spinal cord. Modulation of dural tension may be initiated via a sensory reflex to muscular contractile tissues. The spinal cord functions primarily in the transmission of nerve signals from the motor cortex to the body, and from the afferent fibers of the sensory neurons to the sensory cortex. It is also a center for coordinating many reflexes and contains reflex arcs that can independently control reflexes. The pons contains nuclei that relay signals from the forebrain to the cerebellum, along with nuclei that deal primarily with sleep, respiration, swallowing, bladder control, hearing, equilibrium, taste, eye movement, facial expressions, facial sensation, and posture. The brainstem has many basic functions, including regulation of heart rate, breathing, sleeping, and eating. It also plays a role in conduction. All information relayed from the body to the cerebrum and cerebellum and vice versa must traverse the brainstem. The cerebellum receives information from the sensory systems, the spinal cord, and other parts of the brain and then regulates motor movements. The cerebellum coordinates voluntary movements such as posture, balance, coordination, and speech, resulting in smooth and balanced muscular activity. Injury to the cerebellum may not only cause physical issues but cognitive issues as well. Ok off to work the horse and NOT tie them to anything
