25.01.2022 Hypersensitivity. Brief discussion about horses displaying autistic tendencies, some ideas for handling/managing these horses, that interestingly are all chestnuts... * Modify touch.....no stroking but a 'holding' pressure, like a flat palm pressure of varying degrees.... * Use of a long towel 'wrap' around neck, body, legs ...if safe to try. * Holding finger pressure at relaxation trigger points. * Using heat packs or cloth wrapped body brush as a brush, no spikes or bristles. * Think of touch and general hypersensitivity of touch, visual, auditory, taste, and reducing or modifying these. And did I mention patience??
24.01.2022 With floodwaters in places still rising, both in the paddocks and in suburbia, keep an eye out for snakes, goannas, lizards and other animals that couldn't find a tree in time. They may be in your shed, garage, home, underneath things. They're only looking for somewhere dry as well, but keep an eye out.

23.01.2022 Extreme heat horse issues... In this extreme heat there are a few things to think about, for the welfare of your horse. 1. Water. If your water heats up during the day it can culture bacteria, algae and concentrate heavy metals through evaporation. The horse may be fine, or he may show symptoms of colic, inflammation, swelling, gas, or general illness, and this may show up a week after drinking hot/warm trough water. Lack of drinking warm water may also cause the horse to bec...ome dehydrated. * during the hot days, partially empty the trough and add fresh cool ( not ice) water. Provide an alternative water source - buckets, dam, electrolytes. 2 Sweating, oedema/swelling of limbs, teats, sheath, lymphatic glands... * ice boots or cold leg compress, hosing and standing in shade/breeze, cold wet towel or compress on swollen bodypart, anti-inflammatory, if extreme, call your vet. 3. Grass founder. Sudden onset of grass growth after drought or sudden change of diet. * restrict grass feed and combine hay with grass intake. Introduce new feed over a 4 week period to enable gut to grow the correct bacteria. 4 Choke. The heat may cause the horse to stop drinking. Then eating hay or dry feeds with less saliva may cause choke. Wet the hardfeeds, hay for at least 5 minutes, this may prevent choke, increase rehydration, reduce dust and allergens. If you're worried about your horse, call a vet for a professional opinion.
