23.01.2022 When we hear the term animal welfare it is so often considered to relate only to neglect and deliberate cruelty, but animal welfare certainly has much wider implications than that. Research is continuing and, as our understanding of the needs of horses increases, we all need to take these on board and adapt our management techniques accordingly even if that means challenging the status quo. Just because we have managed horses in a certain way for decades doesnt necessarily make it right for today. Grab the latest issue of HorseVibes to learn more about World Horse Welfare, an international charity based in the UK whose mission is to work with horses, horse owners, communities, organisations and governments to improve welfare standards and stamp out suffering: https://horsevibes.com.au/

19.01.2022 Australian horse owners face very different management challenges depending on the climatic zone they live in. The impact of climate on pastures, feed quality and availability across different regions has a significant influence on what you need to feed your horse to optimise health and nutrition. 18.01.2022 Thought for the day

18.01.2022 Have a great weekend with your horses... we're off to the paddock now to lose some hours too

18.01.2022 For all the mares out there and the riders who love them

18.01.2022 Are you becoming concerned by the way your horse grabs or chews on the bit? Or perhaps theyre tilting or tossing their head, an annoying habit that you cant seem to remedy. And why is it that they seem unwilling to accept proper contact with the bit? All these issues can be frustrating, and more than a little puzzling - but the answer might just come straight from the horses mouth! During her career as an equine dentist, Anna Minogue The Bit Fitter has seen over 20,000 ...horses mouths, and, as you might imagine, is more than familiar with the anatomy of the mouth and its relationship to bitting. Sadly, she has also seen hundreds of horses with wounds caused by ill-fitting bits, which is what launched her on her trajectory as a bit fitter. 17.01.2022 Alex Townsend, 4* Eventer and Level II Instructor, along with husband Derek Pasco, a Director of Photography and keen eventer, are the owners of Wallaby Hill Farm, a private training facility for horses in the green heart of the NSW Southern Highlands. We thought it was high time for Alex to answer our 20 questions. HorseVibes: What could English eventers learn from Aussie eventers? Alex: Be a little friendlier. There’re a lot more events in England with a lot more ride...rs competing. Horses don’t get off the truck except to compete. A lot of events will do all phases in one day so it’s not as social. As a consequence of not being as social, it can be a little unfriendly with everyone hiding in their trucks. The Australian eventing community is much more friendly, inclusive and supportive. 17.01.2022 6 Top Tips for Happy Lunging, with Charlie Brister 1. Check your gear, and make sure your horse is familiar with the longer rein and any whip or flag you might choose to use. 2. Work your horse in hand on the straight before you send them out to work on a circle.... 3. Aim for calm transitions in both directions without drilling the horse. Finishing on a good note is always advised. 4. Start smaller to make communication simpler. It’s easier to make a necessary correction if the horse is only two to three meters away from your hand. 5. As soon as they’re comfortable and responding to your aids for walk, stop, and trot, enlarge the circle. Working a horse for long periods on a small circle is not advised. 6. Make it interesting and keep them paying attention by changing the pace at least every couple of circles. You can read the full article on our blog... https://equestrianhub.com.au/lunging-its-a-circular-questi/

10.01.2022 TUESDAY TRAINING TIP Combining poles with controlled direction changes is a great way to work on your horses dynamic core stability. Using larger pole layouts also keeps the brain active and prevents your horse from being able to predict which path you will take next. This then incorporates a proprioceptive element to this exercise.... Remember, you can raise some of the poles to further challenge your horse. Happy riding! . . . Credit: @equivate See more

02.01.2022 During her 10 years as a fully qualified equine dentist, Anna Minogue, had seen numerous bit related injuries. Determined to do what she could to remedy the problem, she decided to become a bit fitter. Much of the knowledge out there is out-dated and often incorrect its what I was taught at Pony Club 30 years ago. There are now many more bits and a lot more science and research than once there was, and I think that as owners, we need to keep up with that. The physical consequence of the knowledge vacuum is that mouth wounds are really common. Then youve got the training issues stemming from that, because often times riders dont look inside the mouth and dont know that theres a wound. Find this must-read article featuring Anna Minogue, The Bit Fitter, in the Sept/Oct issue of HorseVibes: https://horsevibes.com.au/
