25.01.2022 Very interesting and relevant to Australia

25.01.2022 TOP TIPS TO HELP YOUR HORSE DEVELOP MUSCLE SIMPLE BASIC RULES -Your horse must be in regular work (at least 4 sessions per week) -The work must be strenuous eno...ugh to stimulate muscle development -Your horse must be in a positive energy balance (getting more energy than they are using) -Your horse must be getting sufficient protein -Lysine: A 500kg horse requires around 25-40g of lysine per day depending on level of work. Feeding lysine above this amount will have NO effect. Average hay would supply around 5g lysine per kg. Linseed would supply around 10g lysine per kg. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON.... -Spirulina/Equitop Myoplast (despite what the vets say!)- -Creatine -Gamma oryzanol/Rice Bran -Amino acid mixes -Protein concentrates e.g. whey protein -Feeding very high amounts of protein wont build muscle -Feeding high amounts of lysine above daily requirements wont build muscle -Spirulina is like protein found in other feedstuffs and is very expensive and will not build muscle dont waste your money -Equitop Myoplast is just a palatable and very expensive way to feed Spirulina and is no more effective than other forms of protein such as linseed save your money! -Dont feed creatine supplements horses dont absorb creatine, you are wasting money! -Dont waste your money on concentrated amino acid or protein supplements! They will not build muscle and are the same proteins as in hay, linseed, oats, etc -Vitamin E (with or without selenium) will not build muscle. -Vitamin & mineral supplements will not build muscle -Gamma oryzanol/Rice bran/Rice bran oil Marketed as a natural steroid. No evidence in any studies that it affects muscle in horses, people or other animals. In human sport and many animal studies, very high doses of the amino acid leucine and HMB (a metabolite of leucine) have been shown to have many beneficial effects on muscle, including stimulating muscle protein production (muscle growth) when given soon after exercise.

21.01.2022 Do you suffer from anxiety? Fear? Endless worry? Is it affecting your riding, and everything else in your life? The Anxiety & Fear Free program is now available and to celebrate I'm giving away 2 ULTIMATE PROGRAMS valued at $175 ea if you like, share and comment on this post by the 30th November 18. The ULTIMATE PROGRAM has 2 modules - the second of which is tailored specifically to your anxiety & fear issues. So if you want to be more confident, calm & in control contact me now!

21.01.2022 Anxiety and fear have ruined many a dream and to some can make life sometimes unbearable. Many people who have experienced these feelings look to herbal remedies, breathing techniques, meditation, positive thinking, mainstream therapies and others just think 'that's the way they are' and as much as they hate feeling like that don't know what to do. The 'thinking' brain has two main parts and depending on where the blood flow goes will determine if you are often reactive, anxious, fearful, agitated or calm, confident and self-assured. Learning to control that blood flow is the key #anxietyfree #confidence #incontrol #ridelikeyoustoleit

21.01.2022 So many times we lose focus....we forget what really matters. We place so much pressure upon ourselves to achieve, compete, win...we lose sight of what is really meaningful to us........you get one chance at life breathe in those moments that precious memories are made of

20.01.2022 With the recent 'exposure' about the slaughter of racehorses I wish to share we at Cottman Racing do not buy yearlings or race 2 yr olds - I do not personally b...elieve in supporting this. Cottman Racing have also rehomed a number of retired racehorses who are still with the same owner and out there competing successfully living lovely lives. For those of ours who were not suitable to be rehomed for various reasons (including one who the owners didn't want back) are living wonderful lives in the paddock supported and paid for by us. To Cottman Racing it is NOT a business it is a passion where our priority is ALWAYS the horse not the money!

20.01.2022 With the hot weather forecast for the weekend this is very interesting!

19.01.2022 Heat Stress in Horses The hot, dry summer in Southern Australia and the tropical, humid heat in the northern areas can combine to increase the ambient heat in t...he air. This increase can reduce the ability of a horse to lose heat absorbed when out in the paddock grazing, in stables overnight, as well as that generated and accumulated during and after training exercise, and is likely to result in heat stress. Horses naturally have a very efficient heat loss or cooling mechanism as part of their thermoregulation system. Only 2 species, humans and horses, sweat to lose heat. The efficiency of heat dissipation improves as a horse becomes fit during training as the thickness of the skin is reduced and the efficiency of sweat loss and transfer of heat from the lung surface is improved. Horses standing in the sun without shade or wind flow at temperatures above 33C, start to accumulate heat in excess of that lost by sweating. They then start to store the heat in the 60 litres of hindgut fluid reserves, which acts as a heat sink. Studies have shown that a horse can store up to 1 million watts of heat energy in its hindgut heat sink, which it can dissipate by radiation, convection, exhaled respiratory air and sweating under cooler evening conditions. Under hot, humid conditions, when the efficiency of sweating, which is the primary means of heat dissipation, is compromised horses can be subject to heat stress. Horses must rely on heat loss as air flows over the body, increased loss from the hindgut heat sink reserves and blowing off heat or panting to exchange heat from the highly vascular respiratory system. Horses under humid conditions often develop the puffs or rapid, shallow breathing at rest, and blow hard after exercise, as they attempt to control their muscle, blood and internal body core temperature. Horses in heavy condition or those with a thick hair coat retain more heat after exercise. Black horses are likely to absorb and retain more heat absorbed from the body surface, compared lighter coloured horses or those with thin hair coats. Dr. John Kohnke has developed a simple calculation to determine if heat stress is likely to occur in your horse. The sum of the ambient temperature (C) and the Relative Humidity (%) can provide a useful guide to the risk of heat stress for horses during hot summer conditions, especially when in work. If the sum is less than 100 (eg Temp 25C, RH% 75), then a horse will be able to sweat efficiently to cool during exercise. If the sum is between 100-120 (eg Temp 30C, RH% 75) then sweat loss will be less effective and a horse may overheat when worked hard or for long periods. If the sum is greater than 120 (eg Temp 35C RH% 90), then sweat evaporation under humid conditions will be significantly reduced and heat overload is likely limit exercise to a maximum of 10 minutes or postpone training until it is cooler in the early morning or evening. Hosing under your horses belly for 30 seconds with cool water will help to remove heat from the hindgut heat sink, as well as helping to reduce forceful panting, blowing. It is best to do this 2 3 times throughout the day during extreme summer temperatures and especially after work. If you would like more information on Heat Stress in horses, or for some handy ways to help reduce the risk, message our Facebook page or email [email protected] for a free factsheet!
