24.01.2022 2 mm rule for reducing teeth was no doubt meticulously followed in this case. Even a little rostral profiling too ("bitseat" or smoothing of 1st large cheek too...th). All I can say is horse owners need to request to look in their horse's mouth to evaluate - in a big picture - way what it looks like. Our solution is to put pictures of every dentition in the patient's dental chart. What we are trying to achieve with occlusal equilibration is very elementary to understand- just incredibly difficult to execute. One doesn't need to be a specialist to recognize the issues here....

22.01.2022 At the risk of sounding like a broken record - I think this is an important topic. Horses generally have 36 teeth that are used in the process of obtaining and... chewing feed. 12 incisors and 24 cheek teeth (canines and wolf teeth don't serve much useful function). Many within veterinary dentistry feel that incisor work is not necessary. Many courses do not teach how to evaluate and address incisor malloclusions. I'm sure that one day soon future dental practitioners will look back with a sense of disbelief at how anyone with common sense would think that not addressing 1/3 of the entire dentition was a good idea.

21.01.2022 Well done Katlin and team KDH Equestrian

18.01.2022 Congratulations to the Equident sponsored combination Katlin Hull and Sunday Morning KDH on taking out the Advanced Championship and Henty Highest Percentage this weekend.

15.01.2022 I constantly hear how the incisors don’t need doing. Just putting in out there, which horse has the better chance of being even on both reins, and less chance of getting super sore in the poll/ tmj?

10.01.2022 This week I treated Dynamik Stallions newest import, Golden West. He has the most amazing temperament. Such a cool dude and an absolute pleasure to work on.

09.01.2022 Congratulations to Equident sponsored rider Jess J K on a successful weekend with Alvin finishing 3rd in the ODE at the SEC and Dolly finishing 2nd in the 95cm class. Photo credit Waylib Photos

09.01.2022 I see so many messed up mouths due to unnecessary extractions and zero after care. Please ask for a 2nd & 3rd opinion before extracting any tooth on a perfectly healthy horse. This however is an awesome example of what a mouth can look like with first rate occlusal equilibration dental work post extraction.

07.01.2022 The primary abnormality in this case is the fact that the left lower incisors are missing. This created a secondary bone deviation of the mandible and incisive ...bone. AND, secondary wear abnormalities of the cheek teeth. Note the difference in clinical crown height of the left vs right premolars. These types of cases are interesting and go against the idea that some practitioners suggest i.e. that incisor malloclusions don't need to be addressed as they don't have any meaningful impact on the rest of dentition. Common sense tells us that both of these systems are very closely intertwined and thus highly likely to affect each other. Cases like this further support common sense. Keep it simple. The discussion - in my opinion - needs to center on the technique, timing, and types of corrective procedures on incisors, not whether or not it's neccessary.

06.01.2022 Yet still the importance of incisor, cheek teeth and TMJ balance is dismissed on a daily basis. The quickest way to solve a problem you don’t understand is to convince your clients it’s an unnecessary procedure only done by non veterinary dentists.

05.01.2022 Always excited to travel to this amazing country. I truly enjoy working with veterinarians that are passionate and devoted to practicing high quality equine den...tistry. Horse dentistry is totally different than small animal dentistry due to the hypsodont nature equine teeth. Because horses have a finite amount of tooth that wears slowly over the years, they have the unique problem of beings being susceptible to unequal dental wear which can dramatically shorten the lifespan of their dentition. The sub-field that addresses this is the art and science of occlusal equilibration. Sadly, this is still a largely ignored field by many leaders in the industry. It is always a pleasure to work alongside those that understand not only the depth - but also the breadth of equine dentistry. There is only one way to get better at equilibration: one must work directly on horses in close collaboration with others to evaluate and critique each others work. Results are best evaluated by looking at the improvements that occur over time. Either the teeth become more and more "balanced", or they don't. The better the quality of occlusal work, the better the dentition will look as time goes by. See more

04.01.2022 Top horse is 20 with regular occlusal equilibration performed annually. Bottom horse is 17 and had teeth floated regularly. But never had occlusal equilibration.... All I can say is horse owners need to demand to see what is being done in their horse's mouth. Change in our profession will come much faster if the public puts pressure and demands higher standards of care in equine dentistry. This is the problem you get when a very small percentage of often not very experienced practitioners that control and bottleneck the information that comes into veterinary continuing education meetings and universities. If you want a broad view i.e. depth and breadth, you have to have more than a handful of people in a click leading a program. Takes guts and integrity to listen to outsiders who might know a few things you don't. But then again that requires leadership. Much easier sitting in a room with close friends tapping each other on the back. No waves. No ruffled feathers. No character. No progress. PS: this is geared for the US and not my international colleagues which are much more open minded and forward thinking (mostly)
