25.01.2022 "It is a privilege to care for another person’s child. Working in an acute child and adolescent mental health inpatient unit I have been fortunate to nurse thousands of children who experienced mental ill-health. Young people who exhibit high-risk behaviours such as suicidal behaviours, deliberate self-harm, and aggression and violence. Often these behaviours are in the context of the young person not being able to manage an episode of acute distress." Dr Stephen Spencer - Eq...uiEnergy Youth Co-Founder Did you Know? 21.01.2022 As a parent and health professional I can recommend this book as a resource for parents and other adults who are involved in supporting young people as they develop. The steps outlined in this guide assist parents to recognise and respond to episodes of adolescent distress, in a way that will encourage young people to seek help and support when they are not able to cope with stressors they encounter. There are very useful strategies presented, that parents can use to engage ...successfully with a distressed young person and help them to feel safe and supported when they are unable to cope. Then options can be considered and selected by the young person to help them to resolve their distress. This approach can also assist young people to develop better coping strategies for dealing with challenges and distress independently in the future. Professor Ashley Kable Equi Energy Youth’s Must Have Guide to Supporting A Child’s Mental Wellbeing in 5 Simple Steps Did you Know? Data from the 2019 Mission Australia’s Youth Survey showed that most young people seek help for important issues in their lives from friend/s (83.0%), parent/s or guardian/s (75.2%) and relative/family friend (57.6%). Around half of young people indicated that they would go to their brother/sister (50.8%), the internet (46.1%) or a GP or health professional (45.5%) for support with important issues in their lives. 16.01.2022 "Most children and young people in Australia grow up in a safe, healthy and positive environment. However, vulnerable groups of children and young people continue to lack adequate human rights protections. Children experiencing homelessness or mental health issues, children with disability, children in immigration detention and Indigenous children are some of the groups of children particularly at risk of falling through the gaps." https://humanrights.gov.au//childre/about-...childrens-rights www.eeyouth.org.au

12.01.2022 When you’re supporting someone else, like a young person dealing with mental health issues, it's easy to let your own wellbeing slip to the bottom of the priority list. But sacrificing your own headspace won’t help anyone else’s. Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish it actually gives you more ability to be there for others. https://headspace.org.au//looking-after-yourself-when-you/

07.01.2022 "Gen Z teenagers often feel that they need to do everything as they prepare for their future - always doing, going, getting, and having - from their school work and testing to volunteering, friends, family and personal projects. And they're so enveloped in social media that there's a crushing pressure to be the perfect, well-rounded teen. As a result, Gen Z's mental wellness is being challenged, and often leads to depression, anxiety, even panic attacks. ... Teens are so focused on the outside that they forget to focus on themselves too. That reality caused Emily to ask, "When will we get the chance to be?" In her view, Gen Z teenagers need to realise that it's okay to be still, to take breaks, mental health naps, and most importantly, to just be." 04.01.2022 "Childhood trauma isn’t something you just get over as you grow up. Paediatrician Nadine Burke Harris explains that the repeated stress of abuse, neglect and parents struggling with mental health or substance abuse issues has real, tangible effects on the development of the brain. This unfolds across a lifetime, to the point where those who’ve experienced high levels of trauma are at triple the risk for heart disease and lung cancer. 01.01.2022 "Many of our most vulnerable learners are those gifted kids who know they just don’t fit it. In our rush to identify and label children for purposes of funding and organising our educational services most efficiently, we may be missing the ground level, actionable and everyday needs of an entire grouping of needy kids. Our most gifted, sensitive and creative students are our canaries in the coal mine; they are more sensitive to the world around them and the reactions we see in them can teach us what our education system needs to be, believe and include. As is often the case, what is necessary for some may be beneficial to all." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybmgVSdsMu8
