23.01.2022 Have a "bad" rein? Try this exercise to improve your stiffer side! Most riders have a rein that is more difficult for them. Whether its turning, transitions, picking up the correct canter lead, lateral movements, most riders do find there is a difference between the left and the right. And of course, this often translates through to their horses stiffer side as well.... Most commonly riders are better on the rein that is their dominant hand, although not always. To balance up your reins, a lot of it does come down to practise and coordination, however, if you do not have even strength, balance and muscle activation between left and right, there will always be a significant difference. Your thoracic spine (the area of your back between your neck and the bottom of your ribs) plays a huge role in your body's rotational ability. If you are locked and stiff or weaker on one side, it is very easy to collapse or not turn correctly in the saddle. Try out the Kneeling Thoracic Rotation exercise to even up your reins! 1Start kneeling on all fours 2 Start with your right hand, move your left leg back a few centimeters, and scoop your right hand under your left (like threading a needle) 3 Reach under as far as you can, stretching through your thoracic and placing your temple and shoulder on the floor. 4 Then rotate your body back around and reaching your arm towards the ceiling, thinking of turning your chest around. (Be conscious not to just use your arm to pull yourself around). You should feel an activation through your midback as you rotate from your thoracic. 5 Repeat by scooping arm back under again, and repeat for 5-10 repetitions. Then repeat on the other side.

23.01.2022 This exercise is great to activate the inside of your thighs (the adductors) and the inner part of your glute which are both important in riding to maintain a neutral pelvis and legs that drape around the horse. 1Start by lying on your back, with knees bent and feet a hip width apart. 2Place a block or ball between the knees 3Squeeze the block to activate your inner thigh and tuck your hips under... 4Raise hips by pressing heels into the floor, using glutes to extend the hip 5Lower and repeat, maintaining the neutral position of your spine Kirsty Holmes - Personal Trainer

21.01.2022 Enjoying having so many extra days for riding this holiday break!

21.01.2022 Both you and your horses bodies need care to stay strong, supple and healthy! Had a brilliant session last week with Equine Massage WA looking over Elle. We have homework (including lots of carrot stretches!) to work on improving her mobility as she gets older.

19.01.2022 I am hosting an Equestrian Fitness Workshop coming up at Valley Views Equestrian Park on Saturday September 21st. I will also be offering a limited number of 30 minute individual fitness assessments on the day. For tickets and more information check out the event!

18.01.2022 As a rider, your fitness and strength level plays an important role in your position, stamina and effectiveness in the saddle. I run a program called Equiletix, and I am passionate about helping equestrians to improve their fitness and strength. Your fitness is the key to making amazing progress both in the saddle and also making a busy horsey lifestyle a little easier on the body! My name is Kirsty, and I am a qualified Personal Trainer and have my Bachelors Science in Sport...s Science, Exercise and Health. I am particularly interested in rider fitness as I have ridden since I was 7 and am passionate about Dressage. I love seeing the effect regular strength, cardio and flexibility training has for riders as they feel more balanced, secure and effective in the saddle. I know myself what an amazing feeling it is! I offer One-on-One Personal Training for tailored and also run two small group sessions at 1:30pm Tuesday and Thursday. I am based in Midvale, WA, close to the Swan Valley. For more information and to apply head to: https://www.equiletix.com.au/home

15.01.2022 Do your tight hips cause your knees to pinch against the saddle when you ride? If you are not strong and stable through the muscles in the side of your hips it is hard to maintain a neutral seat. This can cause riders to feel unstable in the saddle and start pinching in with their inner thighs which blocks the horses movement! Clams are an exercise that strengthens the glute medius muscles on the side of your hip which can help with the functional mobility of your hips.... Being able to keep your hip open and wrapping around the horse allows for a steady and consistent seat and a better position to give clear aids! While this is one piece of the puzzle, give the clam exercise a go to strengthen your medius! 1 Lay on your side on a mat 2 Stack your knees and hips on top of each other and bend your knees to about 90 degrees. 3 Roll your hips forward slightly so that you are not rocking back 4 Open your leg like a clam, with your hand on the side of your hip to feel the glute medius muscle working. You want to feel the muscle activating and rotating the hip, not down the leg or on the inside of the leg. 5 hold and squeeze the muscle at the top, then lower down slowly. Repeat for 10-15 reps. To make the exercise harder you can add a small circle band above the knees. If you would like help on your fitness to improve your riding, you can contact me on 0488 782 633

15.01.2022 Equestrians! Do you want to feel more balanced, stronger and safer in the saddle? I have a few spaces open in my small group training sessions at Strength and Motion Academy in Midvale, WA specifically for rider fitness. We currently hold sessions at 1:30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I am also avaliable for One-on-One Coaching.... If you want to finally progress to the next level and be a better partner to your horse, sometimes it's not a matter of spending more hours in the saddle to give your riding the edge it needs to improve. What can be holding you back from developing your skills could be your muscular imbalances, lacking stamina or core strength that are reinforcing old habits and patterns. The best way to be sure you can put your best foot forward as a rider is to hop off the horse and start training yourself! The Equiletix small group sessions are 60 minutes and focus on strength, cardiovascular fitness, and flexibility specific to riders. Every new rider will need to book in an individual consultation with me prior to joining in the sessions for me to assess their goals, injuries and health history and cover the basic movement and activations needed before they jump into the group sessions. If you are interested, contact me, Kirsty Holmes, on 0488782633 to book in a consultation. It's time to become the rider you know you can be!

15.01.2022 Rider Testimonial Kate I started training with Kirsty nearly two years ago with a small group of like-minded riders who wanted to improve overall fitness and general well-being. Our group meets weekly and I also have my own individual program designed by Kirsty so I can also go along to the gym whenever I like. ... When I started I was recovering from a shoulder injury which prevented me from lifting my arms above my shoulder. Gradually, I have become stronger and stronger and no longer worry about what my shoulder can cope with. Apart from the benefits of overall well-being, my strength and stamina have improved enormously. With exercises specifically targeted towards muscle groups that we all use when riding, my ability to sit trot has improved dramatically (although I still dread those Mediums across the diagonal!). Ive also dropped a dress size. And I actually enjoy going to the gym! The Equiletix Program is starting on July 1st at Strength and Motion Academy in Midvale WA, message for expressions of interest!

14.01.2022 Equestrians! Do you want to feel more balanced, stronger and safer in the saddle? My Equiletix Rider Fitness Program is starting next week, and this is your last chance to inquire about the program before we begin! Are you sick of your instructor telling you for the thousandth time to keep your heels down and elbows in?... Do you want to finally progress to the next level and be a better partner to your horse? Sometimes it's not a matter of spending more hours in the saddle to give your riding the edge it needs to improve. What can be holding you back from developing your skills could be your muscular imbalances, lacking stamina or core strength that are reinforcing old habits and patterns. The best way to be sure you can put your best foot forward as a rider is to hop off the horse and start training yourself! Working on your muscular balance, core strength, cardiovascular fitness and flexibility will make you a more efficient rider and give you better body awareness in the saddle. To support riders on their fitness journey, I am holding a small group training program called Equiletix. I am launching from 1st of July at Strength and Motion Academy in Midvale, Western Australia. The sessions are 60 minutes and focus on strength, cardiovascular fitness, and flexibility specific to riders. There will be a few sessions held each week to choose from and home programs that you can do at home. Every rider will need to book in an individual consultation with me prior to joining in the sessions for me to assess their goals, injuries and health history and cover the basic movement and activations needed before they jump into the group sessions. If you are interested, contact me, Kirsty Holmes, on 0488782633 to book in a consultation. It's time to become the rider you know you can be!

14.01.2022 Have trouble keeping your shoulders back and down when you ride? It can be quite challenging to keep your shoulders in the correct position when riding, especially as our modern lifestyles tend to encourage a rounded position from cars, desks and smartphones! It is easy to find your shoulders rolling forwards, or trying to pull back into a tall position by arching your lower back to compensate!... Try this exercise to strengthen and activate the muscles that keep our shoulder blades back and down and chest open. Band Pull-aparts 1Start by holding an elastic band in your hands with palms facing up. 2Keep your elbows against your sides and set your shoulders down, as if you are tucking your shoulder-blades into your back pocket. 3Rotate your arms outwards and away from each other. 4Rotate as far as you can, and then pull your shoulders back, feeling an activation between your shoulderblades and behind your shoulder. 5Slowly return to the starting position and repeat for 10 repetitions Once you have strengthened these muscles, you can try using the mid-back activation to keep your elbows by your sides and attain an open chest whilst riding, without pulling on the reins! #equiletix #riderfitness #equestrianfitness

14.01.2022 Riding is a team sport! You and your horse are the athletes. This means both you and your horse need to be individually fit, healthy and prepared for the sport.... I believe your riding sessions should be the time where you are developing the training, skills and technical execution of your riding. You don’t want you or your horse to be struggling to make it through a riding session without becoming exhausted or unable to do the work asked! Work on your fitness, strength and balance out of the saddle so you are much more prepared to be a good team member during the riding sessions. In turn, your hose will benefit hugely from groundwork, cross training (hacking out/cavaletti/pole work) to keep them fit, supple and healthy too. Riding isn’t just about riding itself. Taking time to develop you and your horses fitness as individual athletes will make it much easier to come together as a synergistic team! https://www.equiletix.com.au/

14.01.2022 So grateful for Rebecca from WA Equine Performance Services for treating Elle regularly to keep her moving. She always feels so much better after her massages! Bec’s expertise is incredible and her care and attention to Elle I appreciate so much. Not only is she always so thorough in assessing and treating, she always gives me a greater understanding of my horses body, and what I can to do help her stay as supple as possible as she gets older.... I highly recommend Bec! #equiletix #equinemassage

13.01.2022 EQUESTRIAN CLIENT TESTIMONIAL Bjorg I no longer worry that I may have to give up riding!... "A year ago I had reached a point in my life where I had to make some big decisions. Years ago I had a bad fall off a horse and badly injured both my knees. Five knee operations later, I still had problems and pain, and it was starting to impact my hips and low back. I still ride horses and love it, but was finding it more and more difficult due to the pain. I was starting to struggle with everyday chores and my whole body was feeling stiff and tight. I was worried I might have to give up riding and maybe have another knee operation. My riding instructor suggested that I go see Kirsty at Strength and Motion Academy. After a chat with Kirsty I was hopeful she could make a program to help me. A year later I can honestly say I have not felt this good in a very long time. I feel so much stronger and am able to do chores like mucking out horses without getting a sore back. A few months ago I was able to go on a hike in the Mountains of Norway and am planning to do part of the Camino de Santiago next year. I have also bought a new horse, as I am no longer worried that I may have to give up riding. I look forward to my weekly sessions training with Kirsty, it has made such a positive impact on my life! For client inquiries contact 0488782633. In July I am launching an Equestrian specific small group Program called Equiletix. Contact me for expressions of interest! Kirsty

12.01.2022 Finishing the weekend with a good ride and a sunset. Its going to be an amazing week!

11.01.2022 Beyond all the lessons, tests and obsessing over our position we have to pause and have gratitude that these incredible animals even allow us to ride them at all!

11.01.2022 We often get told to relax and go with the horse with our seat, but I think this is highly misinterpreted! While of course we do not want to be tight and gripping our horses with our seat and legs, we also don’t want to be floppy and tension-free either, you will be bounced all over the place, and fall behind the movement! The secret to a secure, stable and influential seat lies in our development of strength, control and coordination with the muscles of our core, glutes,... inner thigh and hamstrings in particular. We must be able to maintain engagement of these muscles when we ride, so we need a degree of tension within the muscles for them to be active. Then we can dial up or down the use of the muscles to apply an aid, and maintain a stable and steady connection with our horses back that can actually follow the horses movement! Develop your strength, suppleness and balance off the horse, and notice the difference in the stability of your seat over time!

11.01.2022 I have started lessons with Liesl Wilding and am loving her attention to detail and position based coaching! Your fitness and riding skills go hand in hand but both need to be worked on! #equiletix #riderfitness #equestrianfitness

10.01.2022 Excited to have joined Gidge Dressage Club this year! Elle is still going strong at 20, so I am excited to see what we can do!

10.01.2022 Such a beautiful time of year! Love a ride in the golden glow of the afternoon.

10.01.2022 Best view to finish the weekend!

09.01.2022 We all have reasons we love riding. I love the unspoken language of dressage, that you can create such a deep connection and understanding with a horse with your body. Because of this I am so passionate about helping riders become fit, strong and mobile so that they can ride well and continue riding and communicating correctly with their horses, for as long as possible.

09.01.2022 The positive impact my fitness has on my riding is phenomenal! Growing up I competed in dressage and eventing, attended pony club and lessons, and loved horses and riding with all my heart. What I wanted most was to become the best rider I could for my horse and to see progression and improvement in my performances, both in training and out at competitions.... But what held me back from progressing were issues with my position that would come up again and again. Whether it was a lack of bend to the left, an elbow that wouldnt stay in, or wobbling in the sitting trot. It didnt matter how much I rode, I kept reinforcing these patterns, and of course I couldnt influence my horse effectively to see the true potential we had! No matter how many times an instructor would tell me about my postition, and I used all my willpower to try and improve, I kept blocking my own progress. However, after studying Sports Science, Exercise and Health at university and beginning to strength train in the gym I saw huge improvements in my strength, flexibility and health. This was a time in my life where study and commitments made it hard for me to ride often. Funnily enough, when I could finally get back in the saddle and start training again, my position, stability and stamina had improved out of sight! If only I had know the positive benefits to my position, stability and effectiveness in the saddle, I would have started training years before I did. Now it is my passion to empower riders to become fitter, stronger and more balanced so that they can become the best rider possible through the Equiletix program!

09.01.2022 The Cylinder of your Torso When riding or exercising in most instances we want to maintain what is called the cylinder of our torso. This is a neutral position that maintains even intra abdominal pressure so that we stay stable, protect our back from injury and remain more effective in the saddle when giving aids. To practise this position:... 1 Start by tucking your hips so that your pelvis is neutral. If you think of the bowl of your pelvis like a bowl of water, tuck until the water will sit in the centre of the bowl, not spill out the back or the front 2 Bring your rib cage down so that it aligns above the bowl of your hips. Do this by exhaling and drawing down the front of the rib cage. This doesnt mean to slouch, you must maintain an open chest and shoulders back and down. 3 Breathe down into this space, activating the transverse abdominis muscle or the corset of your core. Practising maintaining the cylinder of your core will help maintain a stable position in the saddle and will make your exercises safer and stronger!

09.01.2022 If you want to be the best partner you can for your horse, you must make sure you are also staying fit, healthy and supple. If you struggle with your position, endurance in the saddle or feeling stiff and sore when riding, you and your horse cannot perform your best potential. Equiletix is a fitness program aimed at the equestrian athlete and we offer one-on-one coaching and small group sessions at Strength and Motion Academy in Midvale. Equiletix is specifically for riders w...ho would like guidance in becoming stronger, fitter and more flexible for their riding. Contact Kirsty on 0488782633 for more details!

06.01.2022 Have trouble with stiffness on one rein more than the other? One aspect that can affect your ability to rotate and find the correct position is your mobility through your thoracic spine. Your thoracic spine is the segment of your back where your ribs are attached, and this should be able to rotate, flex and extend and side bend quite freely.... When you get stiff and tight through this area it often causes compensations through other joints as they try to do the job of the thoracic spine. Try the Side Lying Windmill to mobilise through the thoracic spine as well as opening up through the shoulder and chest. You will probably be just tighter on the rein you struggle to turn on! 1Start laying on your side with knees stacked at 90 degrees. If you have a foam roller you can prop your top leg on it and keep your bottom leg straight instead. 2 Place your palms together, then take a big breath in and stretch your top arm forwards. 3 Then sweep your top arm up and overhead and breathe out, like a windmill. Make sure your chest is turning and opening as you windmill, to rotate through the spine, not just swiveling with the shoulder 4 Finish the windmill with outstretched arms, thinking of turning your chest away from your bottom arm. You should feel like you are being wrung out like a towel and there is a stretch through your chest and front of shoulder. 5 Return arm straight back over your torso and repeat.

05.01.2022 Finishing the weekend with a good ride and a sunset. It’s going to be an amazing week!

Elle was also a little crazy on this particular day and Rebeccas magic hands relaxed her right away. She is also supported by Rose-Hip Vital Equine, CEN oil, 4cyte an...d hock injections from Valley Equine which also help so much in keeping her joints moving as she is getting older.
