22.01.2022 CORONA VIRUS EDAA is always committed to a high standard of biosecurity and ensuring the safety of our clients and their horses, along with providing a safe work environment for our members and clients. Our members visit numerous properties daily and with the volume of confirmed cases of the Corona virus (COVID-19) increasing, we are taking a proactive approach (without being alarmists).... With this in mind, we ask that you to please keep us informed if anyone within the home is unwell or if any suspected or confirmed cases of Corona virus (COVID-19) have impacted you, your clients or guests on a property that we are due to attend; this includes anyone in home quarantine. In the interest of best practice, EDAA members reserve the right to postpone attending any property which may be housing someone infected or at risk until the quarantine period is over. #coronavirus #biosecurity #equine #horses

20.01.2022 OOWWWW! EDAA Dental Technician Clare Brown found this stick lodged between lower teeth, and under a mares tongue, when treating a horse this week. Safe to say the mare is feeling a whole lot more comfortable now! If something is NQR with the way your horse is eating, or there is a sudden reluctance to wear the bit, it is worth asking your local EDAA technician to stop in and take a look. 16.01.2022 When our horses start behaving differently on the bit, or in their eating habits, how often do we think about checking in with our equine dental technician? EDAA technician Clare Brown says "This lovely mare Reine had become extremely inconsistent in the contact when riding, even on a loose rein she was chewing the bit and tilting her head. Luckily for Reine her owner thought to get her checked even though she wasnt due for her six month check. 3 incisor caps out, 2 molars c...aps and 1 partial molar cap! Reine should be a lot more comfortable now!" Put your horse in expert hands, use an EDAA equine dental technician for your horse!

16.01.2022 Interesting pic of wolf teeth removed by EDAA dental technician David Sullivan Equine Dental "Approximately 70% of horses will develop wolf teeth. While these teeth usually do not pose a health risk to the horse, they are often removed in performance horses to prevent interference with the bit and to avoid traumatizing the soft tissues around the teeth leading to soreness." from TheHorse (thehorse.com) Put your horse in expert hands, use and EDAA qualified equine dental technician, www.equinedental.com.au

14.01.2022 This is a very useful tool for horse owners! Many plants that grow in Australia are potentially poisonous to horses. Such plants can cause considerable economic and welfare problems for horse owners. Under most circumstances, horses will avoid consuming toxic amounts of poisonous plants. However, some poisonous plants are palatable to horses and some need only be consumed in very small amounts to cause poisoning. Horses may choose to eat poisonous plants when there is little alternative forage. Also, seasonal conditions may influence the toxicity levels of certain plants, making them more deadly at various times of the year. #horses #horsecare #horsewelfare #plantspoisonoustohorses Click here to see more https://www.agrifutures.com.au//plants-poisonous-to-horse/

09.01.2022 A REFLECTION ON COVID19 FROM OUR MEMBER IN IRELAND, DAVID SULLIVAN. Life has changed a lot in the last five-six weeks. The way the virus has spread from China to Italy and Spain we have seen how devastating it has been and how out of control and over whelming it has been on different countries health systems within Europe. France and Spain are only a couple of hours flight from us and it didnt take long for the virus to reach Ireland. It gave us a week or so to start prepar...ing which has been a massive help. Its been very hard for people to first understand what is actually happening and the threat is now here and its become each and everybodys responsibility to slow its spread and try to ease the burden on our Heath services. I think a lot of countries have followed the same patterns of confusion, panic buying and then coming to terms with this new reality. All non essential businesses are now closed in Ireland and have been for almost two weeks. Our restrictions include staying within a 2km radius of our homes and only travelling for essential trips like food or tending to animals. There is now a 2,500 fine or 6 month jail sentence penalty if you are travelling without a valid reason. I dont think anyone is upset or feels too inconvenienced about what is happening as we are all trying to protect ourselves and our families. The government has advised all over 70 to cocoon this is where they try not to leave there house or meet anyone outside their own household. We had an initial 2 week lockdown which has now been extended and I think to everyones relief as with previous world pandemics if restrictions are lifted too soon it can be followed by a second wave of infections. The message Italy and Spain gave was to prepare and practise the well known practices of social distancing and handwashing, avoiding unnecessary travel and mass gatherings. Some countries responded quicker than others and I think so far their numbers are reflecting that. (The UK were very slow in their response and their numbers are rising quickly). Personally I stopped working for two weeks for my own peace of mind as you can carry the virus and have no symptoms. As an EDT we work with bio-security always at the forefront of our minds and take measures to prevent the spread of disease and infection on a daily basis. I now wear gloves to avoid touching mutual surfaces (turning on taps and opening doors), observe social distancing and have thought about working in the evenings when staff have left in some yards. I use my own head collar and lead and disinfect regularly. Most people are happy to have left their horses for a couple of weeks to see what is happening. #covid19 #coronavirus #biosecurity #horses #EDAA #equinedentaltechnicians #stayhome #horsedentaltechnician #horsedentist #EquineDentalAssociationAustralia #equinedentist
