25.01.2022 Today is international womens day, so I thought I would congratulate Ayla on flying the flag high for women in an a frequently male dominated industry. Few people can produce a set of yearling x-rays as meticulously as Ayla!

25.01.2022 Are you breeding from some of top blood lines in Europe? Billy Buckingham, sired by Billy Congo, has just won the Hickstead Derby, giving William Funnel a record breaking fourth victory! Equine Veterinary Services are proud suppliers of Billy Congo semen for frozen AI, right here in Queensland, Australia. Don’t miss out, see Billy Congo’s breeding potential for yourself, by watching the video highlights from Hickstead in the link provided. http://www.hickstead.co.uk//william-funnell-joins-hickste/

25.01.2022 The Darling Downs have been blessed with some wonderful rain. We hope that everyone has had their fair share by now. 30mls today and a stunning rainbow, bringing our total to 93ml for the week. Let us know how you are travelling... and may you and your horses stay safe.

23.01.2022 MESSAGE FROM QLD CHIEF BIOSECURITY OFFICER "Horse owners should be reminded of the importance of Hendra vaccination. A shortage of PPE may mean veterinary staff are not able to safely attend to unvaccinated horses with clinical signs consistent with Hendra virus disease." Equine Veterinary Services wishes to advise our clients that we have been unable to secure any supplies of P2 masks, and protective overalls for several weeks now. Gloves are also difficult to obtain. Our stocks are running low and we strongly recommend that you keep your Hendra vaccinations up to date, and vaccinate any unprotected horses, so that we can continue to treat them if they develop clinical signs consistent with Hendra virus disease.

22.01.2022 Keeping up to date is a constant challenge in the medical sciences. Thomas Dolan is just back from four days at the Bain Fallon conference on the Gold Coast, and John Barnwell and Cassie Moroney undertook the Pathology Lab (mare swabs, blood slides, foal abortion and PM etc.) conference in Scone this week. Always putting the best interests of our clients first... well done team!

21.01.2022 The whole team at Equine Veterinary Services wish our wonderful clients a very merry Christmas! As we reflect on the past year, we know that none of the good things we have achieved would have been possible with out your support. Thank you. May you, your loved ones and your horses stay safe, and may we all be blessed with good rains in the New Year.

Game 1 SA 28 and Aus 15, Game 2 Aus 28 and SA 17 and Game 3, the DECIDER... Aus 30 and SA 22 !! Congratulations also to Byron for achieving best No 3.

19.01.2022 Important information for thoroughbred breeders sending mares to Stallions in the Hunter Valley.

19.01.2022 Its that magical time of year when we can all down tools and breath a sigh of relief, if only for a few days. John and Carol would like to take this opportunity to wish our Equine Veterinary Services family, staff and clients alike, a very happy Christmas and a rich and rewarding 2018.

18.01.2022 FASCINATING VIDEO! This is a very simple technique that every horse breeder should make themselves familiar with. It can greatly improve the outlook for dummy foals.

18.01.2022 HENDRA VACCINATION BOOSTER EXTENDED TO 12 MONTHS Equine Veterinary Services would like to let you know that the AVPMA has recently extended the requirement for Hendra booster vaccinations out to twelve months (following the initial course of two injections three to six weeks apart and one six monthly booster). There after horses will be considered fully vaccinated if they have an annual booster. Please share this great news with all other horse owners! http://apvma.gov.au/node/12876

17.01.2022 Wishing our fabulous nurses, Emily and Katie, all the very best on Veterinary Nurses Day 2017. Thank you for your dedication, professional assistance, unfailing support, and wonderful friendship through out the year.

17.01.2022 Psittacosis, a bacterial disease carried by birds, that can be transmitted from horses to humans, has been implicated as a cause of abortion in mares on the Darling Downs. Sick neonatal foals can also be very infectious to their carers. PPE should be warn at all times, when handling these animals. Please advise your doctor about any possible contact with aborting mares and sick foals if you fall ill shortly afterwards.

17.01.2022 Proud moment as John's son Tom Barnwell graduates as a veterinarian. Congratulations Tom! Wishing you all the best as you head off to join a great mixed practice in Inverell, NSW.

16.01.2022 Biosecurity Queensland are WARNING that there has been a sharp rise in the number of 'bat to dog'and 'bat to human' interactions reported in recent weeks. This may be due to the prolonged draught resulting in weak and emaciated bats falling to the ground in residential areas. Due to the fact that a small percentage of these bats are known to be carriers of either Lyssavirus or Hendra virus, care should be taken if weak or injured bats are encountered.... Do not approach or try to handle these animals yourself. Call a wild-life carer to come and deal with them. Scratches or bites from these bats, can potentially transmit these deady viruses. If the bat is already dead, but in an area where it may be exposed to dogs or people, put on a pair of gloves before carefully placing the dead bat inside a secure plastic bag, then another, and disposing of the body in a dust bin. This will help prevent children or house hold pets from finding the dead animal and examining or eating it. For further information please contact Queensland Health or Biosecurity Queensland. If you or your pet have recently been exposed to scratches, bites or the saliva of a bat, seek medical assistance immediately from your doctor or veterinarian. The dead bat pictured here was found at Lions Park Toowoomba, no where near the bats usual roost site.

15.01.2022 It is starting to feel a lot like Christmas as we celebrate another year drawing to a close with our hard working team at Equine Veterinary Services. A huge thank you to all our wonderful staff and clients that made this year possible. (And what a year it was!).

14.01.2022 WHAT IS YOUR DIAGNOSIS? Could a vaccine have prevented the death of this horse? There have been 3 cases locally in less than 12 months.... Tetanus occurs when wounds become infected with tetanus bacteria which are present in soil. The bacteria produce a toxin which affects the central nervous system causing muscle stiffness, spasms, and a prolapsing third eye lid. Often the tail is held out, the gait becomes stiff, the horse cant eat, and eventually goes down. Convulsions are followed by death from paralysis of the respiratory system if the horse is not put down first. Treatment is difficult, expensive and often unsuccessful. Every horse from 12 weeks of age should be vaccinated to prevent this from happening. Please check your records.

14.01.2022 Sage advise with the breeding season just around the corner! Equine Veterinary Services is always happy to answer your questions, just give us a call.

12.01.2022 A TIMELY REMINDER from Biosecurity Queensland. This quote is taken directly from the Biosecurity Queensland website. As a horse owner or person dealing with horses, you have a general biosecurity obligation to take all reasonable and practical measures to prevent or minimise the effects of a biosecurity risk. Hendra virus poses a serious biosecurity risk. This means you are LEGALLY required to reduce the risk of Hendra virus infection and limit the spread of Hendra virus whe...Continue reading

11.01.2022 The Billy Stud. Donal Barnwell. Equine Veterinary Services has Billy Congo semen available for AI here in Australia. https://www.facebook.com/1055058252/posts/10216676084228578/

11.01.2022 WHAT DO THESE THREE PICTURES HAVE IN COMMON? Do they impact on your horses performance? Find out for yourself by booking a spot on Thursday 16th August. Clinical signs of gastric ulceration include poor performance, depressed appetite or inappetence, intermittent colic and occasionally loose faeces, chronic diarrhoea, poor hair coat and poor body condition. Ulceration is more common in hard working and performance horses. Signs in foals include depressed appetite or inappeten...ce, teeth grinding, dribbling saliva, diarrhoea, sternal recumbency or weakness. Accurate diagnosis requires direct endoscopic examination of the gastric mucosa using a specially long endoscope. Don't let your horse suffer in silence. Randlab, in conjunction with Equine Veterinary Services, is holding a 'Gastric Scoping Day' on Thursday 16th August 2018. For just $50, you can have your horse sedated, scoped and a treatemnt plan implemented (if necessary). Places are filling up fast, so give the surgery a ring on 4630 9983 to book a time.

11.01.2022 Is your horse underperforming or acting strangely? This could be due to gastric ulceration. Equine Veterinary Services in conjunction with Randlab run 'Gastric Scoping Days' for a nominal fee that enable you to get your horse correctly diagnosed and treated to help improve performance and behaviour. If you would like to book your horse in for our next scoping day, please contact Dr. Ayla Hunt or the surgery directly 07 46309983 www.equineveterinaryservices.com.au

10.01.2022 COVID19 POLICY Equine Veterinary Services recognise that we, and all our clients, are moving through unchartered water. It is our hope that through the months ahead, we can continue to provide you and your horses with the veterinary care they need. ... To achieve this, we must strive to protect our staff and minimise disruptions to our services as much as possible. We will therefore observe any guidelines imposed by government and follow the advice of medical experts. To this end Equine Veterinary Services has introduced the following measures: 1. Please let us know if you or any close contacts are unwell or have recently travelled from overseas. We are happy to treat your horses, but will provide a nurse to handle them should you be unsuitable to be in close proximity to others. Please do not visit the clinic in this instance. 2. We are asking that only one person accompany each horse to the practice in order to limit exposure for our staff. 3. Regrettably we are limiting use of the restrooms at the clinic to staff only, to limit contact with surfaces. 4. To comply with social distancing we have placed a black line a safe distance from our reception counter which we are asking customers to stand behind to minimise the risk of transmission. Drugs can still be collected and payments made from behind the line. 5. Cleaning and disinfection is a high priority. Please observe all signs. We apologise for any inconvenience and would like to assure all our valued clients that we are committed to doing our utmost to deliver continuity of service while fulfilling our social responsibility. Please call if you have any questions or concerns.

10.01.2022 Equine Veterinary Services are very happy to welcome Katie Hennessy, Casey Vorbach, and Jane Howes, to our team. Many of you will already know Katie (an equine nurses) who has worked with us previously... it is great to have you back Katie! Casey, a University of Queensland (Honours) veterinarian, grew up on the beautiful Sunshine Coast, but now lives in Toowoomba. Lovely to have you join us Casey!... Jane qualified in South Africa and, like John Barnwell, comes with eight years of amazing work experience in Zimbabwe. Jane has recently moved with her family to Toowoomba and hopes to have the opportunity to take up polocrosse again soon. We are hoping all our wonderful clients make these lovely people feel welcome too. Love your horses... Love your vet... none of us could get by with out them!

10.01.2022 Congratulations to Cwmkaren Woody and David Rozynski on their oustanding acheivement! Champions at the Australian Carriage Driving Championships.

10.01.2022 Alert: Hendra case south of Murwillumbah EVA has received confirmed reports of a positive case of Hendra virus, diagnosed by an experienced private veterinarian, on a private property south of Murwillumbah in North Eastern NSW. The horse was a 17 y.o. retired thoroughbred gelding, which presented as in-coordinated with breathing difficulties. Importantly, it did NOT have a temperature. This presentation demonstrates how vague and variable the signs and symptoms of Hendra viru...s can be, and serves as a reminder to all horse owners to use appropriate levels of PPE if you think your horse is 'just not right'. This is particularly important if the horse is not vaccinated against this fatal disease. Biosecurtiy Queensland advise all veterinarians and horse owners that researchers have forecast increased numbers of Hendra virus cases this winter, due to recent and prevailing climatic conditions.

09.01.2022 Many of you will already know Emily Denyer and Katie Hennessy our two qualified and experienced equine veterinary nurses. What you may not know is that today is Veterinary Nurses Day and this is why I would like to take this opportunity to say a very special thank-you to these two wonderful people. Without their commitment, energy, dedication, hard work and sense of humour, the wheels of Equine Veterinary Services would grind to a halt. Most of you will already know their voices on the phone, but rest assured, behind the scenes their work goes on, ensuring that your animals receive every possible care and comfort if they ever have to visit our hospital. So please join us in saluting Emily and Kate on their special day! Well done and thank you both.

08.01.2022 IMPORTANT INFORMATION - HENDRA VACCINATION STATUS AND THE WELFARE OF HORSES This paper, presented by Dr. C Smith B.Vet.Med. at the EVA Bain Fallon Equine Conference on the Gold Coast in July of this year, provides valuable statistics that you may wish to take into consideration when you decide whether or not to vaccinate your horses against Hendra virus in Queensland.

08.01.2022 Hats off to our veterinarian Ayla and the local fire brigade for rescuing Dixie Bell who managed to get her front leg stuck in the cattle grid pictured. She was a model patient suffering no serious injuries, only a few cuts and bruises. Don't forget to catch it on the news tonight!

08.01.2022 Some very exciting news to report this Christmas... Lachie and Pam have welcomed a little boy, brother for Georgie, safely into the world. Congratulation!

08.01.2022 They say it takes a whole village to raise a child...and it certainly takes a whole team to save a sick foal... special thanks go to Emily Denyer and Cassie Maloney for all their hard work, expertise and the loving care they devote to all the horses, large and small, at Equine Veterinary Services.

07.01.2022 Equine Veterinary Services are delighted to let you all know that Adriana and Dale Taylor welcomed this beautiful little boy, Liam, into the world recently. Adriana and Liam are both doing well, and we wish Adriana all the best for her maternity leave. 07.01.2022 Equine Veterinary Services is holding a Gastric Scoping Day on Thursday 17th October. If you are concerned that your horse has a reduced appetite, is loosing condition, or has changed in their attitude or performance recently, then gastric ulcers should be considered. Diagnosis is best made by passing a 3m endoscope, generously supplied by Randlab, directly into the sedated horses stomach. Treatment is possible, often leading to great outcomes. The discounted cost for sedati...on and scoping is only $50.00! Due to the popular demand for this service, payment must be made at the time of booking your horse in to be examined. Please ring the practice on 07 4630 9983 to have your horse checked, or rechecked following a course of treatment.

07.01.2022 Are you worried about feeding your horses through the drought? 06.01.2022 Every vet deserves some time off. John Barnwell getting up close to some elephants.

06.01.2022 A NOTE OF CAUTION We have been through a drought so severe that when we walk through our paddocks after rain, we are careful where we place our feet for fear of stepping on a blade of grass! It is wonderful to see the Darling Downs showing the first signs of recovery. Long may the wet weather continue. ... Along with the green grass comes the mud, so all horse owners need to be especially alert to any signs of lameness at times like these. Ponies that are prone to laminitis are at particlar risk. And the muddy conditions will lead to an increase in the number foot abcesses. Early detection is the key to successful outcomes. Don't hesitate, call your vet at the first sign of a problem presenting.

05.01.2022 CONGRATULATIONS! Our fantastic vet nurses, Emily Denyer and Katie Hennessy led the way at the Toowoomba Royal Show. 03.01.2022 This case of Hendra illustrates the RISK that HORSE OWNERS take when they don't vaccinate their horses. This horse was in a yard for three days prior to the onset of clinical signs. The horse developed neurological symptoms last Friday. The owner euthanased the mare himself when it became unresponsive. How much PPE was worn during this period? If the horse was shot, a mist of highly infectious aerosols would have been created and potentially inhaled. There is always splash ba...ck too. Did the owner wear full PPE and a mask at this time to protect himself? Would you have done so too? The dead horse was tested on the Sunday and the positive Hendra results only obtained the following Wednesday... a full six days after the horse was infectious to any in contact persons. Monoclonal antibody treatment has so far only been shown to be effective when administered with in 48 hours of exposure to this deadly virus. Why take chances like this? Please vaccinate your horses

03.01.2022 Equine Veterinary Services would like to advise all our breeders to be on the lookout for cases of Psittacosis abortion in mares. We have recently diagnosed our first confirmed case of Psittacosis abortion on the Darling Downs in Queensland. Psittacosis is a zoonotic disease that can cause severe flu-like symptoms and pneumonia, that requires hospitalisation, in humans. There is no vaccination against Psittacosis, but antibiotics can be used to treat confirmed cases. Psittac...osis has only recently been identified as a cause of abortion in horses, following clusters of severe respiratory disease in vet students and staff at a university in NSW. Then in 2016, thirty confirmed cases of Psittacosis abortion were identified across the state of NSW. It is important that anyone coming in contact with an aborting mare, sick or dead foal, or placenta should be wearing full PPE for protection from now on. This means overalls, gloves, P2 mask and eye protection. Mares can also give birth to live foals that rapidly succumb to severe respiratory infections. During this period, the foals are very infectious to humans. If you have any questions about Psittacosis abortions, please do not hesitate to give Equine Veterinary Services a call on 07 4630 9983. http://www.standard.net.au//horse-disease-infects-humans/

03.01.2022 Do you have an evacuation plan for your horses in the event of a natural disaster? Could they be: 1) Moved quickly or identified as belonging to you if suddenly released for their own safety? 2) Could you still feed them adequately, if your local area has been totally burnt or flooded? 3) How could you better manage their stress levels and any sudden change of diet that may result? You may find this link helpful https://thehorse.com/136540/feeding-evacuated-horses/

02.01.2022 A very special thank you to Dr. Jennifer Stewart for her wonderful presentations on Feeding Horses Through a Drought, and the Nutritional Management of Laminitis. Her down to earth and very practical advice was really appreciated by the 80+ people who attended our seminar. Thank you!

02.01.2022 Welcome to the world little buddy! (Fates/Rothesay colt born at Gainsborough Lodge 2016.) Sring has sprung and Equine Veterinary Services would like to wish all our breeding clients a happy and successful stud season.

02.01.2022 FIRE-ANTS! Do fire-ants pose a threat to horses? Can fire-ants prevent access to water? Can you treat a horse stung by fire-ants? Is fire-ant bait toxic to horses and humans?... Biosecurity Queensland have released a document that answers all your questions. http://ava.informz.net/ava/data/images/EVA/Fire%20Ants.pdf

01.01.2022 Are you feeling bored, locked down at home with your horses? Why not get involved in a few 'Online Horse Shows' by following their page on Facebook? The competition is tough, and getting tougher each week, so don't think you can fake this, but if you put in the hard yards... there are real sponsors and real prize money to be won for the best video entries. Equine Veterinary Services would like to congratulate our veterinary nurse, Emily Denyer, not only for her great wins on ...Honey Toast, but for her really positive attitude in these hard times. Go Emily! See the photo of Emily on Honey Toast in the comments below. We have also posted Logos of some of the prize money sponsors to thank them. Good Luck everyone! https://www.facebook.com/OnlinehorseshowsAus/

01.01.2022 Great win for the Gatton Black Pigs! Both of John's sons scored a try. Lucky they had such good sponsors... note the logo on Nick sleeve!
