21.01.2022 CASE OF THE MONTH !! Meet Renee, she is a 11 year old Tb that was non weight bearing lame RH. We were called in to take a look because she had elevated dig...ital pulses and swelling in the pastern, but no reaction to hoof testers. After doing an abaxial nerve block she was drastically improved, isolating the lameness to the foot, and prompting xrays to be taken. The xrays show a large sequestrum on the proximal dorsal aspect of P3. A sequestrum is a piece of dead bone that has broken off from the main bone. The body recognizes it as a foreign body and develops an inflammatory response to get rid of it. Surgery was elected to remove it, and needles taped to the dorsal wall to pinpoint the exact location of the sequestrum to remove it from the smallest site possible. Due to its proximity to the coffin joint a joint sample was taken, showing that the coffin joint was also infected. The coffin joint was flushed and she was put on regional and systemic antibiotics to clear the infections. After surgery the site was packed with betadine every other day until the underlying tissue was completely cornified. At that point the defect was packed with an antiseptic and covered with a patch and allowed to grow out without being filled with debris. She is currently about 6 months post surgery and just gave birth to a healthy colt. The defect is almost grown out and she is doing great!

14.01.2022 For my English speaking friends great news for you! You waited so long. The Dutch version of ‘The Horse Inside Out’ was launched today! We got some amazing resp...onses from participants already! So we thought; let’s carry on with the good news! We are happy to share with you that the English version of the learning programme will be launched at May 1st. For all the English-speaking people that want to be the first to start learning in May, we celebrate with an early bird discount for them as well in the whole month of April . The Horse Inside Out program will teach you all about the healthy horse and the abnormalities that may arise in the horse’s body. Would you like to be able to see through the horse's skin to understand how the horse works from the inside? I think this course is perfect for you. It contains exclusive footage from dissections and in-depth explanations on anatomy and biomechanics. After completing each section you will receive a certificate to demonstrate your acquired knowledge. Interested? You find more information about the whole course here: https://equinestudies.e-quine.com/en/ Or write me an email at [email protected] and I will happily answer all your questions!

12.01.2022 We hear a lot about rescued horses, but far less about refeeding syndrome. Too much too soon can literally be deadly. "For the first 7-14 days, no grain or other supplement should be provided. Small amounts of alfalfa hay is ideal, provided every few hours. Grass hay may be substituted. Some horses may not be able to masticate properly, due to muscle loss, and soaked alfalfa pellets may be used. "

11.01.2022 In case it’s hiding in plain sight, this is a quick reminder that the Equine HealthKick clinic is very soon after Easter. The bookings are coming in and we’re definitely going ahead, so if you’re thinking of joining us, please send your deposit or payment in ASAP (PM me for account details). This helps me to plan: I want to make sure we have enough horses to go around (although you can bring your own best friend), as well as workbooks to make the experience a deeper and more interesting one. Bringing a horse is low cost once you’re here, with showground agistment in the showground's new, roomy stables at around $10 a night. There are motels in Uralla for you If you don’t want to bring a horse, that’s fine too. If you need to know anything else, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me and I’ll be pleased to help.

06.01.2022 This is quite a photo story... glad that the little fellow is safe, having already been moved away from the floods.

01.01.2022 Think on this - if it doesn't cost you too much glucose
