25.01.2022 Echidna Assisted Learning We had an echidna come into a session the other day, a very caring gentleman approached it. In their normal fashion the echidna dug down so only it's spines were visible. Echidna's are prickly characters at the best of times, but I was just wondering what causes me to 'bristle' up? And what helps me to 'unbristle' and continue on my way?

25.01.2022 We may be facing a lockdown, and icy weather this week, but the first signs of spring are emerging. We'll all get through this. Stay strong and embrace the light.

24.01.2022 Getting rid of the crap. It takes a bit of work but the results are worth it. Life can be a bit like that. If you're struggling at the moment, give us a call.

23.01.2022 Last night was cold and wet, and we were expecting more of the same today. But in the warmth of the sunlight ...

22.01.2022 Special thanks to one of our team members for connecting and spending time with a beautiful client referred to us by Goodsky mental health who offer an amazing integrated program, focusing on individual needs.

21.01.2022 MY Stuff I would like to share my ‘S’ on a difficult journey while doing Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy with one of my most important team members. I realized a few years ago that he could not see out of his left eye. In order to keep clients safe, I would let them know that he was blind and to make sure they were talking to him as they approached or to approach on his other side. I then noticed a change in his behaviour, normally a horse that has always been fine with peo...ple touching him anywhere, he started to put his ears back and turn his head suddenly toward the client when touched on the side. If I approached him confidently and put a firm hand on him, he was ok, but a light hand was not welcomed. As time progressed, I noticed him walking into objects especially items on the ground. If there was a sudden movement, he would get a fright. Then I would hear him whinnying when the other two horses weren’t close by. I noticed at gateways he would stop, paw the ground, and inch forward carefully until through the gate way. At times when the other 2 members of his small herd ran on ahead and he whinnied they would run back to him, wait for him, and then slowly go in the direction they wanted to go. I have witnessed such a beautiful dynamic within the small herd. The vet told me last year, that he may not see the year out before I would have to say farewell. Here we are another year later, he is almost totally blind, and I believe he can only see outlines. He has maintained his weight; he has a great attitude and he doesn’t know what the word cancer means. He is still in sessions. I do mention to clients that he is blind and ask that they talk to him when they approach him. If/when his ears turn in their direction then they can approach. If he is resting, not eating then it is best not to approach him at all as he gets startled and may mistake them for one of the other horses. So my S is, is it safe and what is the best thing to do? What would you do? See more

21.01.2022 More client feedback ... My first experience with the three beautiful horses was delightful and unforgettable. The session was mainly self-led which was a new experience altogether for me. The most amazing part is that there is really no agenda or any objectives to be met. The experience was well and truly a personal one. Choosing what I want to take and what I’d like to leave. Sometimes a facilitator, whether a psychologist, counsellor or coach, wants to see you achieve wha...t they have in mind. So, I thoroughly enjoyed this as someone who has attended regular therapy for 2 years. I believe Rob and Helen were like guardians, simply giving you prompts and ideas which you could interpret in any way you saw fit. It was up to me to explore my dynamics with each of the horses and notice how they behaved around me. They’re extremely smart and sensitive animals, each with their own personalities like humans which I never expected since I don’t spend much time with horses living in a suburban area. Horses don’t speak our language, yet they have so much to share! I am so grateful for this experience and can’t wait to come back to Romsey and catch up with the horses.

20.01.2022 In late 2019 we lost our beautiful Malibu to cancer. The team are really missing his gentle presence ... there is a big hole to fill.

19.01.2022 Today CRLLEN Industry Engagement Manager Lena Way (pictured) visited Equine Insight in Romsey to undertake an equine therapy discovery session, with a view to p...romoting it to secondary schools as an alternative method to assist at-risk young people. Equine Assisted Learning, performed with a horse specialist and mental health professional, assists clients to address behavioural, emotional, spiritual and relational issues with the aid of horses. Director Helen Shaw states that it’s not really the horses our clients learn about, rather they discover powerful things about themselves and those around them. Clients learn about social and communication skills, respect, boundary setting, coping with and influencing change, improving relationships and building self-confidence. CRLLEN hopes to use equine assisted learning as part of Project Ready. To learn more about Equine Insight, visit www.equineinsight.org.au or email Helen at [email protected]

18.01.2022 We recently worked with a lovely family and just received feedback from them about their time with Equine Insight. We would like to share Anne's story with you.

18.01.2022 Like a dripping tap ... For months now we have had a tap that dripped and we put up with it, making the constant adjustments needed to minimise the mess. Funny thing is that it didn't seem to want to repair itself, so it just got worse. It's only now, having got to a point where we were totally sick of it, and of having to explain to everyone else how to work around the dysfunctional tap, that we fixed it. It's amazing how delightful it is to have a tap that doesn't drip... every time we use it we are delighted. Such a simple thing! Relationships can be like that too.

17.01.2022 In Memorium - This is a short video from City on a Hill: Melbourne from a couple of years ago featuring Helen on Malibu. He was such a lovely, gentle, but powerful horse.

17.01.2022 Worth thinking about.

16.01.2022 Second installment of the Mindfull Aus video ... talking about alignment with core values and being in the moment, being real. Check it out.

15.01.2022 This morning I watched the horses as they were all keen to eat hay from the same round bail. One of them seemed to be telling the others to move out of their way. The black one kept being pushed away. As I watched, the black one would move around and again approach the bail of hay from a different point. This continued for about 10 minutes until they all seemed to be content eating, but still keeping a watchful eye. I wondered which horse might reflect me the most, the one that was telling others to move out of my way or the one being pushed away. If I was the one that was somehow pushing others away from me I wondered how I was conveying this message and why, and if I was the one being pushed away, I wondered if I would continue to approach or if I would just stand back and give up. Food for thought.
