20.01.2022 Are you feeding your horse GARBAGE? Well that’s just silly - or is it? WE are in control of what we feed our horses - and yet most of us are GETTING IT WRONG!... Let’s think about the human population of the world for a moment. It’s now widely accepted that humans are getting more unfit and more overweight year on year. In 2019, an estimated 38.2 million children under the age of 5 years were overweight or obese (WHO) As these children grow into adulthood, very few are able to shed the excess pounds they gained as a child. And this global obesity epidemic is set to continue! AND GUESS WHAT? It is WORSE for horses - it is estimated that the prevalence of obesity in domestic horses is now well over 70% in many areas of the world and RISING! Over 70% OVERWEIGHT HORSES are at a greater risk of: Exercise intolerance Founder/laminitis Severe hoof problems Joint and soft tissue damage Metabolic issues Increased heart rate Increased respiration rate AND THE LIST GOES ON! So it’s really not a good idea for your horse to be overweight! BUT...a huge challenge facing our domestic horses is owners NOT actually RECOGNIZING that their horse is overweight. Often owners THINK their horses are working hard when, in reality, their exertions have MINIMAL impact on their energy requirements. They are so used to seeing their horses that they STOP SEEING the excess weight PLUS to further complicate matters, their friends horses and many other horses at their barn or yard, are also in the overweight category. We are becoming BLIND to obesity. So WHAT should we do as responsible horse owners? Start to UNDERSTAND DIET from the horse’s perspective! Horses are natural foragers - NOT grazers! They need to forage on a WIDE VARIETY of fibrous plants and herbs to have a healthy all round diet. But what does the average horse eat? Too much pasture grass - very little variety and too HIGH IN SUGAR Single species Hay (or Haylage) - very little variety Hard/Sweet feeds - processed (expensive) and often full of inhibitors and preservatives Supplements - a massive multi million pound industry continually adding to this dangerous state of hyper nutrition But is all of the above really needed? No The number one thing that horses need more than anything else, and yet most horses truly lack is....NATURAL FIBRE VARIETY! FIBRE - FIBRE - FIBRE Our domestic horses simply DON’T get ENOUGH of it! Instead owners put their hard earned cash on HOPE. They HOPE - the pasture, the hay, the bagged feed, the supplements, will all be ok. This is what the manufacturers call HOPE MARKETING! Big feed companies, large scale commercial forage suppliers, supplement manufacturers... ...all know that the average horse owner gets CONFUSED with what to feed their horse and so they prey on that fact... ...and just confuse you even more... ...and your confusion is BIG BUCKS to them They may even give you a HELP LINE to contact their ’specialist nutritionists’ to guide you on what you should feed your horse - your already OVERWEIGHT horse! BUT the painful truth is, most of this is just NOT NEEDED! DON’T - just turn your horse out to pasture and HOPE for the best. DON’T - just feed lots of different supplements and bagged feeds and HOPE for the best. DO - understand that your horse needs FIBRE - and LOTS of it! But...how can I feed less grass and more hay you ask? Well we hear you...and it starts with CHOICES. You have to make the choice to improve your horses management, turnout, hay consumption and movement. And that’s where we come in This magazine inspires and educates owners to understand that the barefoot lifestyle is more than just taking the shoes off! It’s all about getting the management and diet RIGHT, and that results in healthier horses and hooves. And everyone wants that right? So start today by reading The Barefoot Horse Magazine, and see how other owners are fighting the GARBAGE epidemic...and keeping their horses sound, fit and healthy. 19.01.2022 With days over 40 hitting us already in AUS it’s so important to help your animals stay cool & hydrated! HOT SUMMER TIP If you have a liquid electrolyte lik...e Recharge or Rehydrate, mix 20-40mL with some water in a ice cream container and add some of their favourite treats like carrots and apples and create a delicious frozen treat for your horses! They will love it, feel replenished and it will also encourage them to drink during these scorchers! Hot weather can also be stressful for them so don’t forget to still give them some INSIDE OUT with their feed to help their tummies function properly www.evolutionanimalcare.com.au www.evolutionanimalcare.nz evolution_animal_care (Instagram) #youcarewecare #functionalnaturalscience #pethealth #petcare #healthyhappypets #horsehealth #healthyhappyhorses #insideout #infusion #equestrian #animals #instride #householdpets #holistichealth #jointhealth #dogsofinstagram #workingdog #hoofhealth #horsesofinstagram #performacehorses #australiamade #supportlocal #hotweather #hottips #keepcool
19.01.2022 Are you driving your horse crazy? It's an honest question that horse owners need to consider if they 'board' or 'keep' them at a facility where the horses must ...be kept in a stall for more than just a small part of the day. Some horses will tolerate being stalled for a third of the day but those who are confined to a cage (sorry, stall) for great parts of the day - every day - often suffer from some sort of neurosis or mental illness. No doubt that you would never knowingly or intentionally want to cause this but it is what happens when you keep a horse in a way that is completely opposite of the way that nature designed the species and created its natural life and habitat. The optimal situation is to give your horses the freedom to choose to be wherever they prefer - in the shelter, out in the rain or snow, sleeping in a pile of sand with some herdmates (while another keeps watch), grooming a buddy, browsing through some bushes or eating hay along the track (etc.). You don't have to spend a lot of money to create a track. It is an ideal way to keep your horses safe, healthy, moving and simulate their natural habitat. "...horses are social animals and experience a number of behavioral problems when isolated and confined. They also have a strong need to exercise and can become increasingly frustrated when not allowed daily free exercise. Many behavior studies have found that the prevention of movement (exercise), social interaction with other horses and grazing causes horses to develop behavioral problems such as weaving and cribbing. If you stall your horse, consider the effect this situation might have on his general health and emotional state." ~ Dr. Thomas R. 18.01.2022 Hock sores can be a secondary issue to the true source which could be inflammation, laminitis, pain in the joints or muscles. The human equivalent would be b...ed sores. Most of us wouldn’t lay in bed over 8 hours. However a person who is ill or incapacitated may spend a lot longer in bed. This means that circulation is compromised and the blood can pool in areas, and if those people are not turned or moved frequently, bed sores develop. Horses don’t necessarily need to be bedridden for long periods to get hock sores. Even a couple of extra hours per day may bring them on. Some things to consider if your horse develops hock sores: .... Is your horse lying down more than normal? ( this could be sore legs, tiredness, hoof issues, laminitis etc)? Environmental changes, such as less bedding, changing in bedding type. Scuffs or rubs on other body parts, such as tail rubbing, or elbows. Overall skin health. Dry skin, scurf, or coarse and brittle coats can contribute to sores. Are there joint issues, arthritis or muscular issues that may make the horse lay down more than normal? Some horses (like one of mine...Benjii) loves to roll a lot! Sometimes he will accidentally kick one of his hocks in the rolling process. This is not a hock sore but could be mistaken for one as it will take off some skin and leave an open wound. One of the reasons I made Salve-Ation was because of this. My clients and myself have had great results from this. Clean the wound very well. Then apply a smear of Salve-Ation, and watch the healing progress at a rapid rate. https://www.equineherbalist.com.au//al/products/equi-heal If the sores are because there is another reason, it’s important to look for the root cause as we always do in herbal medicine. 17.01.2022 HEATWAVE ALERT: Native animals are well adapted to Australian summer weather but they can still suffer during heatwaves. Here are some practical things you can ...do to assist our wildlife over the coming days: - Put clean, cool water out for wildlife in shady places. https://www.wires.org.au//wildlife-fact/water-for-wildlife - Keep a box in your vehicle with a cotton pillowcase and a shallow dish and water bottle to fill the dish with cool water. Please always offer wildlife water in a shallow bowl to lap as needed rather than pouring especially from above. - If you find an animal suffering heat stress and it is safe to do so please take to the nearest vet immediately and handle as little as possible. - Flying-fox colonies can be impacted by heat. Please remember to NEVER touch a bat. If you see a bat of flying-fox on the ground or low to the ground please do not approach but provide shade gently mist intermittently and call WIRES 1300 094 737.
