20.01.2022 #feelgoodfridayfridaystory! Lochie owned by Caitlin Eather Lochie first presented to the team at EPLC on August 6, 2018 with an acute bout of laminitis. Dr Jo Holt and Link Baumann clinically assessed Lochie and radiographs confirmed the initial diagnosis. Dr Penny Dow from our SEH Radiology team was called to perform venograms on his front feet to visualise and assess the blood flow and to determine the best management plan for Lochie.... Link therapeutically trimmed his feet and applied NANRIC Ultimate Wedges with sole putty to decrease the deep digital flexor tendon tension and unload the damaged lamina. A venogram repeated on August 17 confirmed he was stable and progressing well. After spending the next few weeks under the watchful eye of the EPLC team, Lochie was transported to Chatsworth Park and remained under Links care with monthly trimming and application of Ultimate Wedges as the damaged lamina and hoof started to recover. Caitlin made good use of her Equissage and Hidez compression suit and socks to help relieve secondary muscle and other pain during his recovery. Like every long-term rehabilitation Lochie experienced minor setbacks which were well managed by Caitlin and her support team within EPLC and Scone Equine Hospital. In January of 2020 Caitlin started riding Lochie again and successfully competed at Mudgee in March and Tamworth in August. Lochie is still under the care of the EPLC team with Link keeping him well shod. He remains on Hoof GOLD and Poseidon Equine Digestive EQ and VM with Caitlin managing a low GI diet to sufficiently fulfill his workload requirements. The team at EPLC look forward to following Caitlin and Lochie in the months ahead after what was a long rehabilitation period with an excellent result.
19.01.2022 Why do foals need to have colostrum? When foals are born they are extremely susceptible to infections caused by bacteria or viruses found in the environment, due to Immunoglobulins not being transferred during pregnancy. The immunity from the mother lasts 6 - 12 weeks at which stage the foals own immune system should be functioning and producing its own protection. Without ingestion of sufficient quantity or quality of colostrum the foal is at risk of developing life-threatening conditions.

18.01.2022 Good Health is vital when preparing your dry mare for the season. Before starting on any breeding journey, it is important to make sure your mare’s general health is as good as it can be. Arrange for all routine care to be done before starting the breeding process. This would include yearly vaccinations, a dental check-up and deworming. Remember, what’s good for the mare is good for the foal!

15.01.2022 Meet Dr Jo Holt! Jo graduated from the University of Queensland in 1990. She worked in racing and stud practice at Flemington for three years before moving to Murdoch University in WA as an equine registrar treating performance and racing horses. Jo gained Membership of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists in equine medicine and joined Scone Equine Hospital in 1996 doing stud work reproduction/anaesthesia and managing performance horse lameness. After having chil...dren, Jos caseload switched to be more focused on performance horse management and lameness, carrying out only part-time stud work for approximately 18 months. In 2012, the Equine Podiatry and Lameness Centre was purchased by Scone Equine Group, and Jo was employed to work from here and has done so ever since! Jo and her partner manage a spelling and broodmare farm Ithilien Farm, where she works on the breeding and foaling of thoroughbred mares for clients. Jo has been involved in Endurance riding in many forms - as a competitor riding two stallions, as a veterinarian and as an official between 1988-2008. She has held the roles of Treatment Veterinarian, National Team Veterinarian, President of the Veterinary Commission, Foreign Veterinary Delegate and has attended two Endurance World Championships as the Australian Team Veterinarian, including the 1998 Bronze Medal winning team in UAE and the 2000 Gold Medal winning team in France. Pictured below is her horse Ithilien Storm. He is a 3 year-old colt by her Arab endurance stallion Rowallan Ramada who Jo lost in a lightning storm 3 weeks after serving Storms stockhorse mother. Broken in at 2, he has always been keen to spend time with the family and used to leave his mother as a foal to do so. After not riding and competing for many years, she is hoping Storm will get her back in the saddle! Between Dr Jo Holt, Link Baumann and Nurse/Admin Coordinator Bec Mussett, these 3 make the ultimate EPLC dream team trio.

09.01.2022 In April 2019, Ima Smooth Blue Cat aka Smoothy was presented to the Equine Podiatry & Lameness Centre. Link Baumann & Dr Jo Holt examined him upon arrival finding acute laminitic signs. Several treatment options were put in place including: Being placed in a stable with both front feet cast and placed in Nanric therapeutic shoes to help keep him comfortable and have his foot mechanics set; Scone Equine Hospitals Dr Penny Dow took X-Rays and Venograms to monitor his pro...gress; A magnetic pulse massage rug was placed on Smoothy for 2 months to keep him relaxed and help stimulate blood flow; Hoof Gold was used as a feed supplement to help promote hoof growth. Whilst in hospital, a special friendship was created between Smoothy and EPLCs Nurse Bec Mussett. Countless hours were spent between these two at grass feeding time, when monitoring him, keeping him as comfortable as possible and giving him the much needed love and attention he required whilst undergoing treatment. Bec says the outstanding nature, resilience and temperament of this stallion, played a big part in his recovery. Following months of extensive veterinary and farrier treatment, in June Smoothy was able to return home. His recovery continued to improve with two more follow up consultations with Link at EPLC & Tamworth Equine Veterinary Centre This is a remarkable story! With the combined help of many of our team members this gorgeous stallion was able to be saved. He has recovered extremely well and his owner advises us he can still be used as a covering stallion. Well done to all the team involved!

09.01.2022 Meet the Gill Family Emma, Lachlan and their 3 girls Annabelle, Olivia and Bonnie Gill recently made the trip from St Fillans to EPLC to have their show ponies (Alice, Muffin, Poppy & Toffee) trimmed by Link Baumann. We originally met the Gill Family, when they brought Poppy to EPLC to be examined by Dr Jo Holt and Link Baumann as she was displaying laminitic signs with foot soreness. After a thorough veterinary examination, x-rays were taken by Dr Jo Holt and Link Bauma...nn lightly trimmed the feet to address the mechanics seen on the x-ray. Ultimate wedges with sole putty were also applied and taped on. A month later, Poppy returned for another check-up and further x-rays, with all signs indicating her foot soreness was improving. Link reapplied the Ultimate wedges and sole putty and 2 months later Link was able to remove the wedges and trim Poppy and leave her barefoot. A great result! The family now bring their other show ponies to be trimmed by Link every 6 weeks. We cant wait to see this tribe again!

07.01.2022 Laminitis in Pregnant Mares Late pregnant mares can suffer from episodes of laminitis. The specific cause is still under investigation; however it is currently proposed that the increase in body weight from the growing foetus and underlying Equine Metabolic Syndrome may predispose the mare to laminitis in the later part of pregnancy. These mares often have a history of repeated laminitis episodes. Lameness often gets worse when the soluble carbohydrate (sugar) content in th...e mares diet is increased. Lush green pastures, grain and molasses contain high levels of soluble carbohydrates. Prevention of laminitis in the pregnant mare can be difficult as there are still many aspects of the disease that are unclear. Starting the breeding season with good quality hooves, and appropriate body condition, maintaining regular trimming and exercise and reducing the percentage of soluble carbohydrates in the diet of mares with a history of laminitis are all important factors in managing these cases successfully. 04.01.2022 FUN FACT An IgG test is typically performed when the foal is 12-24 hours old. A sample of blood is collected and the level of immunoglobulins that the foal has absorbed is determined. An IgG result of >8g/L (>800mg/dL) indicates that there has been adequate transfer. An IgG result of 4-8g/L (400-800mg/dL) indicates a Partial Failure of Passive Transfer... An IgG result of <4g/L (<400mg/dL) is referred to as Failure of Passive Transfer. There are a number of different IgG tests that can be performed either on farm or by your veterinarian.
