23.01.2022 Want the best start for your foal this year? A new foal exam is the way to go! When checking a new foal, a thorough physical exam is performed, allowing the identification of any abnormalities before they become an issue. As an owner, you have opportunity to discuss any concerns you may have regarding the foal's behaviour, or whether there were any issues in the latter stages of pregnancy or during birth that may affect things. In addition, there are a number of blood tests w...e recommend to pick up abnormalities and allow early intervention: IgG - this allows assessment of passive transfer of antibodies from the dam to the foal, essentially making sure the foal has received enough colostrum. Foals who have low levels of IgG are at increased risk for sepsis. White cell count: allows us to assess whether the foal is already responding to the presence of infection. This is most applicable to foals who are assessed as high risk, such as those from mares with placentitis. Serum Amyloid A: this is a quick, "horse-side" test that measures this marker of inflammation. It is extremely sensitive for the presence of infection and allows much quicker intervention than waiting for results from the lab! Plus, don't forget about mum! A check of the back end and udder, as well as her general health, is included too. Get in touch to organise your new foal check!

21.01.2022 Happy clients and patients!

19.01.2022 Great day scoping today with John Dalton from Randlab Pty Ltd and Pia Steers. We scoped 25 horses today with around 50% of horses affected by ulcers. We saw a good mix of non-glandular and pyloric ulcers, with many horses starting on treatment. Thanks again to Double Dan Horsemanship for hosting us.

13.01.2022 FIRST CASE OF HENDRA VIRUS DETECTED IN NSW THIS YEAR Hendra virus has been confirmed in a 17 year old unvaccinated thoroughbred horse on a property south of Mur...willumbah, on the far north coast of NSW. The owner noticed the horse was depressed and having difficulty breathing on Friday, 29 May. A private veterinarian took samples for Hendra virus exclusion, but the horse deteriorated and was euthanised over the weekend. DPI is expecting to see an increased risk of Hendra virus this winter and has been working with Local Land Services to encourage private veterinarians and horse owners to take the necessary precautions including vaccinating horses, and wearing appropriate protective equipment. In NSW, there have been 23 confirmed horse deaths as a result of Hendra virus since 2006, with most cases occurring on the north coast. Horse owners are urged to remain vigilant and talk to their veterinarian about how they can reduce the risks of Hendra virus. For more information about Hendra, visit the DPI website Local Land Services NSW

01.01.2022 SCOPING DAY - Wednesday14th October 2020 After the success of our last day we have decided to hold a follow up scoping day. With the fabulous support of Randlab Pty Ltd, the gastroscopy procedure is provided at no charge. Its estimated that up to 75% of show and pleasure horses have gastric ulcers, and up to 90% of thoroughbred racehorses. Signs can be vague and non-specific, and include: Weight loss... Behavioural changes Decreased performance Reluctance to train Poor appetite Girthiness Low grade colic Poor hair coat If you are suspicious that your horse may be affected, or have considered doing a treatment trial, then getting your horse scoped will give you answers! A follow up scope at the conclusion of treatment can check whether treatment has been effective, or also through the maintenance dosing period. There will be a small fee of approximately $75 to cover the cost of sedation. The day will be held at the base of Double Dan Horsemanship in Kootingal. Please call (0421575237) or message to book your place!

01.01.2022 Semen! Frozen or chilled? What's the difference? Sometimes we just can't get it straight from the horse's mouth, or, ehem.. you know what.... so these are our alternative options. Each has their pros and cons, and might be an important factor in breeding in this COVID world.... Chilled semen is collected fresh from the stallion, extended with a nutrient rich media, then shipped either same day or overnight to the veterinary practice managing the mare. Generally it is good quality (taking individual stallion differences into account), and has good fertility. It has good longevity, so we don't need to be as precise with timing of insemination, and can generally be done on farm. Usually this will work out cheaper from a veterinary perspective, but there are collection and shipping fees to be paid for each cycle, which can be substantial. Weekends are a major inconvenience from a freight perspective. Frozen semen is collected from the stallion, processed and then frozen in liquid nitrogen, where it can be stored for as long as required. The quality is variable, dependent on stallion, the facility who did the freezing, and storage diligence. Pregnancy rates can be good, but the industry average is still around 2.5 breeding cycles per pregnancy. The veterinary work is usually more expensive as more scans are required. Timing has to be precise, and the mare will need to be residing at the breeding centre for insemination. The freight component can be cheaper, as usually multiple insemination doses are sent at the beginning of the season, so its all there ready and waiting in the tank. This year, my recommendation to clients is to head down the route of frozen semen if it is at all possible. My suspicion is that COVID is going to play havoc with the freight companies, and planes are already on limited schedules. Please get in touch to discuss further!
